We are always taking in surrendered ratties and some of them are healthier than others. We had one rat (Templeton) come into the rescue - Templeton is the cutest and sweetest dumbo rat, but had some serious issues when we got him. First he was covered with mites and was all scabby and itchy. We treated him with medicine, gave him a bath and after 5 weeks of treatment, he is mite free and looking handsome. He also had two overgrown bottom teeth that were about 1 1/2" long and had to be cut down and he is missing his two top teeth that broke off when they got stuck in a toy. We took him to the vet to make sure everything was fine, but he now has a permanent "hairlip" where the bottom teeth moved the tissue on the top lip. He can eat and drink fine, but his teeth have to be continually cut down. Since his top two teeth are missing, his bottom teeth do not gnaw down like they should. We love him and he is just the cutest thing !!!!!! We have recently had surgery done on a number of our females that have developed tumors and the bills are adding up. Each surgery (plus medicine if needed) is anywhere from $100-$150 per surgery. We had a wonderful vet that helped us out, but all of this money comes out of our own bank account. I have some awesome pictures of the work our vet did (before and after surgery) so you can see where the money is going. We are also always buying bedding for the cages, high quality lab blocks made with soy not corn fillers, water bottles, etc. We love our babies very much and I have spent thousands of dollars in the past 5 years getting my rescue established and keeping it going. I think that we have done a great job in keeping our guys healthy and happy, but nothing comes for free. Thanks for considering and helping us in our quest to help the babies !!! In October 2007, We were featured in a news story by our local news station and CNN Headline News picked up the story and ran it on national TV the very next day - (www.CNN.com - put in rat rescue in the search area and you will see our story). We were so proud to be featured in such a positive light and I hope we changed some minds on rats as pets. Even if we changed just one mind, we did our job !!!
As of 7/31/2009, we have decided to limit the number of surrenders we take in to the rescue. We have been doing this now for a number of years and sometimes it can be a little overwhelming. I do this rescue totally by myself in my home and I am unable to take in the number of surrenders I have in the past. I have to honestly say that I have met some of the most awesome and greatest people during my time doing rescue. I appreciate the support that I have received from everyone that knows us - I hope to never disappoint anyone. We stay busy with the other animals that we have (5 dogs and 6 cats). We do rescue with Woostock Animal Foundation and we got involved with them during a major rat rescue. (****If you have a place in your home and heart to help foster a dog or cat - please see Woodstock on Petfinder.com - http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/KY38.html). We could always use the help !!!!!! WE do stay busy with keeping all the cages clean and everyone fed, but it is a total LABOR OF LOVE !
