Fulton County Animal Shelter...

of Akron, Indiana

Welcome!

About Our Mission

Caring for the lost and unwanted as we try to find each a new forever home!

This facility houses those animals picked up by Fulton County Animal Control and owner surrendered animals. The manager is reimbursed for 3 days of stay for each animal after which all expenses come out of the personal moneys of the manager.

We work with rescue groups when possible to move animals out of this facility. We consider adoption to applicants outside of this county and even outside of the state. Rescue groups interested in working with us are asked to contact us by phone and be prepared to provide basic information about your organization and its policies.

We have many very adoptable dogs and cats, puppies and kittens and they are looking for that special person to give them a "ForEver Home". Could you be that "special person"? All available animals have been listed on Petfinder.com since April 2006 and have been listed on PETS 911.com as well as on this site beginning in November 2006. Our available pets have been posted on Purina's Very Best Pet Network boards in the pet supplies department of Walmart stores in Rochester, beginning in August 2006, and Wabash, beginning in October 2006.

Low cost spay and neuter surgery services for cats only began in November 2006 with the scheduling of the NeuterScooter in Fulton County sponsored by Fulton County Animal Control.

Beginning January 2007, most Found animals received by this facility are listed on Lostandpound.com in an effort to reunite them with their owners.

We are constantly striving to improve services for both animals and adoptee's, expand adoption options with off-site adoption days and participation in National Adoption events, publicize our facility, its activities and those animals looking for new homes on the local radio station and postings in local businesses and community centers. Discussions for the future will cover more extensive vaccination services, disease screening, and temperament evaluations, and the utilization of volunteers.

Our Adoption Process

This facility is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, Saturdays from 9 AM to Noon, and Sundays from 1 PM to 4 PM. Other times can be arranged by calling 574-893-4391.

Animals are available for adoption after the State-required stay at this facility. An adoption application must be completed. There is an adoption fee of $35.00 to $50.00 for dogs(some may have a higher fee), $45.00 for puppies(who will have their first vaccinations), and $15.00 to $20.00 for cats or kittens. Animals have been determined to be fit for adoption by the manager but are adopted as is. Animals are wormed and treated for fleas as part of housing management provided supplies are available. Any purebred animals that are surrendered with their papers will be adopted out but papers will be given to the new owners only if the animal has been spayed or neutered or after proof is presented by the new owners that the surgery has been completed.

Animals that do not work out in the new home may be returned but no fees will be refunded. Each animals is covered by Petfinders ShelterCare Pet Insurance and comes with an adoption kit. Should problems arise following an adoption, please check out information available through the Petfinders library or by phone. Contact Fulton County Animal Control with questions at 574-893-4391

We encourage all potential adopters to give serious thought to the responsibility that comes with giving an animal a permanent long-term home. Discuss the idea with all members of the family. Animals need regular veterinarian checks after initial vaccinations and spay or neuter surgery. There is the cost of food, proper housing conditions, even if outside, license or tag fees, and knowledge of training and care.

Give careful thought to adoption if small children are in the household. Please reconsider adoption if you rent. Get landlord's approval for an animal and discuss what happens to this animal should you need to move.

For more information on animals and breeds, visit your local library, find information on Petfinders.com, Library, or contact Fulton County Animal Control by calling 574-893-4391

Management reserves the right to refuse adoption to anyone for any reason. Potential adopters must be 18 years of age or older or come with their legal guardians before adopting.

If you have given careful thought to taking on the responsibility of animal guardianship, the rewards you reap will be immeasurable. You can save a life. Please visit the Fulton County Animal Shelter.
