Adoptable dogs at the Mahoning County Pound
Thank you for believing in us and giving us the opportunity to make a difference in a dog's life that to others is "just an animal".
Mahoning County Dog Pound ~ 589 Industrial Road ~ Youngstown OH 44509
KENNEL HOURS: 11:00 am-4:00 pm Monday - Friday and most weekends ~ OPEN UNTIL 7 P.M. EVERY WEDNESDAY !
Most of these poor dogs will never get to smell fresh air before being euthanized by heart stick if it was not for our wonderful volunteers that go to the pound to get these dogs out of their cages to stretch their legs, go the bathroom in grass instead of inside their cages where they are left to lay in. The dog pound is always full so many volunteers are needed to be able to get all of the dogs out in time during pound hours. This is not an easy job but one that brings a little bit of joy to the poor dog that ended up in the pound because of an irresponsible pet owner.
For more information on walking the dogs at the pound please contact us.

At this time we operate strictly from foster homes that take care of the dog until he/she is placed in a new home. Without our wonderful foster homes we could not continue to save dogs. We are in desperate need of new foster homes for these precious dogs. The more people that can reach out and open their home to care for these dogs, the more dogs this allows us to save ! ! Please consider fostering a dog today...our foster application is easy to complete, and the reward is knowing you have saved this dog from an untimely death. Will you take the time to open your home for a dog to stay with you until they are healthy enough to travel or be adopted ? ?
Please help us save as many dogs as we can ! ! Together we can make a change ! !
Please fill out the online application and someone will contact you promptly to answer any questions

Please keep in mind our rescue would greatly appreciate the following items that we use the most often, and so would our dogs in need. Please E-mail any of us and we would be happy to pick up any donated items:
~Dog Food (can or dry)
~Blankets or Pillows
~Gas Cards for when we transport our dogs several hours away
~Paper Towels
~Dog Collars / Leashes
-No item is to small when it is given out of love for a animal...To a starving dog, a bag of food means life, to a cold dog a blanket means warmth, to a dog that has never had a real collar or leash because it was tied to a tree or been caged it's entire life, that new collar and leash means freedom! We deeply appreciate any donation made to our organization, and words cannot express what a wonderful feeling it is knowing that you took a small part in making an animal feel so much better...even if it's for a short time here on earth...
A - YES! As long as you have submitted an on-line application and it has been approved by For the Dogs we drive between 1-2 hours away to find our dogs a home. We are often able to arrange transport to our out of state friends thanks to our wonderful volunteers, truck drivers, and weekly transporters. E-mail us for specifics.
Q – I have submitted my application…now what?
A – Please understand that we attempt to get back to you as soon as possible. We all work regular full-time jobs as well as our work before, during, and after work taking care of all of our dogs, foster homes, sick and dying dogs, going to the pound, going to the vet etc. When the application is submitted is goes to all 3 For the Dogs members. We then all look at each and every application submitted and all agree on the best application for the particular dog. For example, some dogs do require a fenced in yard, some dogs can’t be with other dogs or cats, some dogs are best without children, and some dogs flourish with someone home all day. We always want the very best home for the dog that we know and love.
Q – What is your adoption fee and what does it include?
A – Our adoption fee is only $195 for Puppies, $150 for Adult Dogs, and $99 for Senior dogs. All dogs will come to your home spayed and/or neutered. Puppies under the age of 4 months will not be altered; as soon as the pup has reached 4 months he or she is then able to be spayed/neutered. All of our dogs will be heartworm tested and if they have tested positive, they will be treated to eliminate the heartworm and can then come to your home as soon as a week after treatment to recover in your home. (see heartworm question below) Our dogs have been wormed, given a DHLPP shot and also a rabies shot. If you live in the state of Ohio we also transfer the current Ohio dog license to you which is good until the end of the current year. Most dogs will be treated with frontline during the peek flea/tick seasons June – August.
Q - What does it mean when I see (pending) next to a dog?
A - Pending means a home has been selected for this dog. The dog is not officially adopted until the adoption has been finalized. This can take up to two weeks.

Owning a dog is a big responsibility. Dogs need proper medical care including vaccinations. Look past the moment of "this dog is adorable" Remember...dogs need fed, need fresh water, vaccinations and yearly vet visits, care of their teeth, heartworm tested along with monthly preventative given, bathing and grooming, exercise, walks or a game of fetch. If you don't have time to commit the next 10-15 years when you are looking to adopt a dog then please don't.
Animal Rescues only exist because of overpopulation of pets. Spaying and Neutering your pet is the only way we can stop making more unwanted animals. Good dogs are dying in the pounds, shelters, and on the streets because someone thought....this dog is cute....please do your part and spay and neuter your pet today ! ! !

Emma is doing great and everyone loves her, we are so fortunate to have her. She has lost a little weight and has calmed down now that she knows this is her home. Thank you for such a wonderful friend to share our home with.
Emma beautifully fills an empty place in our home and hearts.
Thank you for the work you do in connecting people with these wonderful friends. Best to you, George Rahlfs
Sampson and his happy forever home !
Hi Kate, I wanted to send you a couple of pictures and let you know how much we love him! He is such a big part of our family and traveled with us to North Carolina for Christmas this year. My parents have fallen in love with him and wanted me to let you know if you EVER hear of another bichon that needs a home please contact me!!! Thanks! Sandy Montgomery

Blossom now Wiley Kiley you can be sure has her place firmly set in our family ! I am hopeful that I can encourage many more people to make rescue their 1st choice. It is so gratifying to know you have made a difference, even if it is just for one animal. If not for people like you the world would be a much darker uglier place ! Sincerely, Angela DiPaolo
