VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Safe but not adopted....help For the Dogs with the large monthly kennel bill for the dogs that are saved from the pound but not yet adopted or placed in a foster home yet. These dogs crave attention and the human touch. Any of the dogs can be taken for a walk to stretch their legs at the Canfield Kennel.
We also have our wonderful dogs being boarded at Aim High K-9 Kennel.

Looking for your new best friend?
We don't have what you're looking for?
Can't bear to go into the pound yourself?
WE ARE HERE TO HELP!

Please check out the pound website and feel free to email us with any questions you have. Please note that puppies are adopted on a first come first serve basis. If one of those cuties catches your eye it is best to go to the pound yourself. You can always call 330-740-2205 ext. 1 or 2 to see if a dog is still available.
Adoptable dogs at the Mahoning County Pound
We rescue mainly from the Mahoning County Dog Pound and from the streets of Youngstown. If you are unable to adopt and would still like to help please consider sponsoring a dog. The pound pull fee is $25 and to fully vet a dog costs $100 more. We work very hard to find other rescues to save our dogs. Almost all rescues are BROKE! We must offer the Mahoning pound dogs at a reduced fee or free to other APPROVED rescues. Any donation amount is GREATLY APPRECIATED and will go to pull/vet a Mahoning County Pound Dog.
Thank you for believing in us and giving us the opportunity to make a difference in a dog's life that to others is "just an animal".

~~~ Dog Walkers always needed DAILY to walk the dogs at the Mahoning County Dog Pound ~~~
Mahoning County Dog Pound ~ 589 Industrial Road ~ Youngstown OH 44509
KENNEL HOURS: 11:00 am-4:00 pm Monday - Friday and most weekends ~ OPEN UNTIL 7 P.M. EVERY WEDNESDAY !
Most of these poor dogs will never get to smell fresh air before being euthanized by heart stick if it was not for our wonderful volunteers that go to the pound to get these dogs out of their cages to stretch their legs, go the bathroom in grass instead of inside their cages where they are left to lay in. The dog pound is always full so many volunteers are needed to be able to get all of the dogs out in time during pound hours. This is not an easy job but one that brings a little bit of joy to the poor dog that ended up in the pound because of an irresponsible pet owner.
For more information on walking the dogs at the pound please contact us.
Donate a Bed
Our dogs love to sleep on Kuranda Dog beds, but we don't have enough for everyone. If you would like to donate a bed at a special wholesale price for another dog to sleep in comfort, please donate a Kuranda dog bed
~ Who We Are ~
We are a small dedicated group of people that simply love dogs. We do what we do every single day to save dogs from being killed at high-kill pounds, owner turn in's "just because" and for senior dogs that have no where else to go.
At this time we operate strictly from foster homes that take care of the dog until he/she is placed in a new home. Without our wonderful foster homes we could not continue to save dogs. We are in desperate need of new foster homes for these precious dogs. The more people that can reach out and open their home to care for these dogs, the more dogs this allows us to save ! ! Please consider fostering a dog today...our foster application is easy to complete, and the reward is knowing you have saved this dog from an untimely death. Will you take the time to open your home for a dog to stay with you until they are healthy enough to travel or be adopted ? ?
Please help us save as many dogs as we can ! ! Together we can make a change ! !
Photobucket
~ Adopting your new Best Friend ~
We will need to process your application before we can set up a meeting. Your application can be completed easily by clicking *For The Dogs Adoption Application. Once your application is approved we can schedule a doggie sleepover. One of our volunteers will bring the dog to you home. This helps the dog feel more comfortable with the change. The dog can then spend a few days with you. They can relax and show you their real personality. All we need at drop off is a signed adoption contract and a check in the amount of the adoption fee. Usually $150.00 and puppies $195.
Please fill out the online application and someone will contact you promptly to answer any questions
* * * * Foster Homes Needed * * * *
Who wants to adopt a new pet they know nothing about? Not many people. Foster homes are crucial in the adoption process. Foster parents teach these dogs love and manners. This may be the first time these dogs have felt a gentle hand or slept in a warm place. The saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" is not true! These dogs are so eager to please that they learn so quickly. We also have an animal behaviorist on call to help solve any problems that we can't. If you are interested in helping out an dog in need please fill out our foster application and someone will contact you promptly to answer any questions.
Why Adopt a Senior Dog? We say. . . Why Not ?!
Photobucket
Senior dogs need love too! Many senior dogs are taken to the pound because "the dog is just to old now" We have saved several older dogs that would have been trash to most, but we all knew the treasure is inside...no matter what the age. Senior dogs are sooo over the puppy stage...no more chewing stuff up, they are set in their ways, what you see if what you get, no bad habits to break. Senior dogs are quiet and are there to be your constant companion...until the end....we love senior dogs and highly recommend the adoption of these Oldie but Goodies!!
Photobucket
Will you help us for one of our greatest needs and foster or adopt one of our wonderful senior dogs below??
All of these dogs deserve a happy ending....
Please keep in mind our rescue would greatly appreciate the following items that we use the most often, and so would our dogs in need. Please E-mail any of us and we would be happy to pick up any donated items:
~Dog Food (can or dry)
~Blankets or Pillows
~Gas Cards for when we transport our dogs several hours away
~Paper Towels
~Dog Collars / Leashes
-No item is to small when it is given out of love for a animal...To a starving dog, a bag of food means life, to a cold dog a blanket means warmth, to a dog that has never had a real collar or leash because it was tied to a tree or been caged it's entire life, that new collar and leash means freedom! We deeply appreciate any donation made to our organization, and words cannot express what a wonderful feeling it is knowing that you took a small part in making an animal feel so much better...even if it's for a short time here on earth...
Photobucket
We hear all the time "You can't save them all" yes, we know, but we can sleep better at night knowing that we are doing everything in our power to save every single animal we can that crosses our path until we no longer have air left to breathe....because we do it "For The Dogs" and because we Love them....and there is no better feeling in this world than saving a life of a dog...! Will you help us to save a life today?
~~~OUR MOST COMMON ASKED QUESTIONS ~~~

Q - I live over and hour away, can I still adopt a dog from For the Dogs?

A - YES! As long as you have submitted an on-line application and it has been approved by For the Dogs we drive between 1-2 hours away to find our dogs a home. We are often able to arrange transport to our out of state friends thanks to our wonderful volunteers, truck drivers, and weekly transporters. E-mail us for specifics.

Q – I have submitted my application…now what?

A – Please understand that we attempt to get back to you as soon as possible. We all work regular full-time jobs as well as our work before, during, and after work taking care of all of our dogs, foster homes, sick and dying dogs, going to the pound, going to the vet etc. When the application is submitted is goes to all 3 For the Dogs members. We then all look at each and every application submitted and all agree on the best application for the particular dog. For example, some dogs do require a fenced in yard, some dogs can’t be with other dogs or cats, some dogs are best without children, and some dogs flourish with someone home all day. We always want the very best home for the dog that we know and love.

Q – What is your adoption fee and what does it include?

A – Our adoption fee is only $195 for Puppies, $150 for Adult Dogs, and $99 for Senior dogs. All dogs will come to your home spayed and/or neutered. Puppies under the age of 4 months will not be altered; as soon as the pup has reached 4 months he or she is then able to be spayed/neutered. All of our dogs will be heartworm tested and if they have tested positive, they will be treated to eliminate the heartworm and can then come to your home as soon as a week after treatment to recover in your home. (see heartworm question below) Our dogs have been wormed, given a DHLPP shot and also a rabies shot. If you live in the state of Ohio we also transfer the current Ohio dog license to you which is good until the end of the current year. Most dogs will be treated with frontline during the peek flea/tick seasons June – August.

Q - What does it mean when I see (pending) next to a dog?

A - Pending means a home has been selected for this dog. The dog is not officially adopted until the adoption has been finalized. This can take up to two weeks.

Owning a dog is a big responsibility. Dogs need proper medical care including vaccinations. Look past the moment of "this dog is adorable" Remember...dogs need fed, need fresh water, vaccinations and yearly vet visits, care of their teeth, heartworm tested along with monthly preventative given, bathing and grooming, exercise, walks or a game of fetch. If you don't have time to commit the next 10-15 years when you are looking to adopt a dog then please don't.
Animal Rescues only exist because of overpopulation of pets. Spaying and Neutering your pet is the only way we can stop making more unwanted animals. Good dogs are dying in the pounds, shelters, and on the streets because someone thought....this dog is cute....please do your part and spay and neuter your pet today ! ! !

Blossom now Wiley Kiley you can be sure has her place firmly set in our family ! I am hopeful that I can encourage many more people to make rescue their 1st choice. It is so gratifying to know you have made a difference, even if it is just for one animal. If not for people like you the world would be a much darker uglier place ! Sincerely, Angela DiPaolo
