Sprite
Hi, I’m Sprite! What’s your name? I love to play! Do you? I would love someone to go for walks with! How about you? I’m searching for a best friend and I know they are out there somewhere just waiting to meet me and take me home. My foster mom says that I’m such a goofy bundle of energy, though, that I might be a little too much for smaller kids or small animals like cats. Boy, I sure do love to run and tumble with the other big dogs at our house!
My foster mom rescued me from the Terrell Animal Shelter when I was just a baby back in the spring of 2003. Little did she know that what she thought was a small terrier mix would grow up into the dog that she now calls Big Head and Hippospotamus – humans can be so silly sometimes! I keep trying to convince her that I could still fit in her lap if she would just sit still! I know she really loves me, but I have so many foster brothers and sisters that it’s hard for me to give her all the love I have in my heart. Plus, even though she tells me it’s not me, I tend to get my feelings hurt when she’s scolding somebody else. It can be so confusing with that many dogs around!
Oh, wait, she told me not to forget to mention that I’m healthy and on a monthly heartworm preventative (whatever that is). She also wanted me to mention that I’m housebroken and crate trained – what does that have to do with anything, I asked? People just want to know that I’m ready to go out and have some fun!!!

What is special about Friends Forever?
Our Friends Forever adoption program has many positive and unique features. Our animals receive complete veterinary care, live with loving foster families, and experience many opportunities to become socialized with people and other animals before adoption. We get to know each of our rescued foster animals very well and can, therefore, provide a lot of information to prospective adopter families about each of them.
Before you click on to our list of animals available for adoption, please take a moment to read the following information about Friends Forever. And, thank you again for visiting us and learning about the animals that we have available for adoption.
What is Friends Forever of North Texas?
Friends Forever is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to the mission of finding loving and safe homes for homeless and abandoned dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens. Our organization began its work in September 2001. We are designated as a tax-deductible charity. We have no paid staff; all of us are volunteers (with regular jobs) who share a love for animals and want to save as many lives as possible. At any time, we usually have 45-55 foster kittens, cats, puppies, and dogs in our foster family network – ready for adoption and ready to go to a home of their very own.
Where is Kaufman County?
Kaufman County is located immediately east and adjacent to Dallas County. The three main towns in Kaufman County are Terrell, Forney, and Kaufman. From downtown Dallas, it is only a 45-minute drive.
Where do you find your homeless and abandoned animals?
Most of our animals are rescued from the Terrell Animal Shelter or are found abandoned along the side of roads in the country. Some are young; others are older.
What do you do with the animals after you rescue them?
Immediately after we rescue our animals, we bring them to a veterinarian in Terrell where the animal’s health condition is evaluated. The veterinarian conducts an initial examination, deworm the animal, tests for heartworm in dogs and feline leukemia in cats, administers vaccinations, checks for ticks and fleas or other parasites, and determines what else needs to be done to bring the animal into excellent health before adoption. In addition, as soon as possible, all animals are spayed or neutered.
Do you keep your animals in a shelter or with foster families?
We do not have a shelter; instead, our rescued animals live with families. All of our foster families love animals and do all that is necessary to give the rescued animal a safe, healthy, and loving environment. Some of our foster families have children. Many have other dogs and cats. Some families foster one or two animals; other families foster several.
What happens to an animal when living with a foster family?
While living with a foster family, the animal becomes socialized – learning how to get along with people and with other animals. Foster families take the animal to the vet for health care, bring the animal to adoption events, and include the animal in their family as if he or she is “one of their own.” Many foster families also housetrain the animal in preparation for adoption (many animals are already housetrained when rescued). Also many foster families train their foster dogs to walk on a leash and obey basic commands.
How much does it cost to adopt an animal from Friends Forever?
The recommended adoption donation is $145 for a puppy or dog and $85 for a kitten or cat. Your donation is tax deductible. Funds raised from adoption donations are primarily dedicated to the veterinary care of our rescued animals.
Do you have regular adoption events? If so, where do you hold them?
Yes, we do. Every Saturday, we hold adoption events at Petsmart in Rockwall from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Petsmart Rockwall is located just off of I-30. For specific directions, call Petsmart 972-722-5333.
What happens if I become interested in a particular animal on the web site. What happens first?
If you are interested in a particular animal, all you have to do is e-mail or call us (see information at top of home page) and let us know that you would like more information about a particular animal. We try to respond quickly to answer any initial questions that you may have. During this first step, we will also ask you tell us a little more about what kind of dog or cat you are looking for, what your lodging is like (house, apartment, mobile home, condo), if you have a backyard and fence, and what routines are important in your schedule. Our primary interest at this first stage is to explore how good a “match” it might be between a particular animal and your situation. If you and we think that it might be a good “match”, we will ask you to complete an application and send it to us via e-mail, fax, or snail mail.
Adoption Application
If it looks like a good “match” might be possible, what happens next? When can I meet the animal?
Meeting the animal is the next step. Many people make arrangements to visit the animal in his/her foster home. The advantage of doing this is that you will see the animal in more natural surroundings. Also, we can make arrangements to bring the animal to one of our adoption events at Petco in Rockwall (we have an adoption even almost every Saturday).
Do you do home visits and veterinary reference checks before approving an adoption?
Yes, in most cases, we do. Visiting the prospective home prior to adoption is a very good way for the prospective adopter family and Friends Forever, together, to further evaluate if the adoption will be a good match. Also, it gives the Friends Forever adoption counselor and prospective adopter family the opportunity to develop a plan for bringing the new animal into the home with as easy a transition as possible.
Many prospective adopters have other animals or have had other animals. In the application, we ask prospective adopters to provide the name of their current veterinarian.
If everything looks good, what happens next in the final adoption process?
The final step in the adoption process includes the completion of an adoption contract. Also, Friends Forever will provide the adopter family with various kinds of information including (1) copies of the animal’s health records, (2) resource material that will help the new dog or cat adapt to his/her new home, (3) upcoming dates for any specific veterinarian care that may be needed by the animal such as final vaccinations in a series or spay/neuter, (4) any other information as may be helpful to a successful adoption. On the day of adoption, we also take a digital photograph of you and your new animal companion and e-mail it to you as a record of this important day!
Do you follow-up with us to see how the adopted animal and new family are doing?
Yes, we actively encourage adopter families to stay in close touch with us during the first several weeks and months after adoption if they have any questions or concerns or if any issues should arise for which we can provide guidance and support. Also, we occasionally call or e-mail to check in and see how everything is going. We want to help in any way we can to ensure a successful adoption and many years of companionship between our rescued animal and his or her new family.
