Events

We would like to say a special thanks to some special people. Thank You, Carol Logston for making us the recipient of the "Town Mascot" race! Thank You, Tim and Debra Branham for hosting the event and Toby for being there as a 4 legged embassador. Thank You, Melisa and John Furkalow for manning the tent and getting the word out about our cause and all that we are trying to accomplish! (big hug to you all) Thank You, Home Town TV for putting us on television. Thank You, to all those that donated and bought a vote for their favorite pet. Without all the support we could not function as a rescue! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

We have seen a tend of owner surrenders increase by 200%. We have had more owner surrenders this one year than we have had over the past 5 years combined. With increasing costs of vet care, food, bedding, meds, and other supplies we really stuggle. We are not the only one's suffering. With so much need, grants are harder to get, and fundraising has dropped as well. Please consider making a tax deductible donation so we can continue our work. The animals need us!

If you can not donate money, we can also use supplies, gift cards, used items, anything will help!

FOSTER HOMES NEEDED ASAP!!!

JERRY LEE

I want a family to Play With!

Owner referral, not at Dumas Rescue. Please contact owners for more information

Hi my name is Jerry Lee. I am a Large blond German Shepherd that may have some Malinois in me. I am 6 years old but you would never know it from the way I act. I am good with other dogs and currently live with other dogs in my home. I am very sweet and very smart, but I have a short attention span. I love to play and my mom says I have a high energy level. I am even good with cats!. I also should be with older kids because I don't realize how big I am, even though I would never hurt one. I currently weigh about 90lbs, but as you can see I could gain a few pounds. I have a great appitite, but I still need a bit of weight. I am current on my shots and i am neutered already. If you are intersted in me please email my mom @ elizabeth_daugher11@eku.edu or call Elizabeth @ 859-552-8177

A Rescue Story

Big Boy

We were recently faced with this sweet emaciated boy's struggle to live. The vet that saw him didn't expect him to make it more than a week. He weighed only 53lbs, mostly from his large bone structure. He was a victim of neglect and cruelty for many cold months. Big Boy, as he was known, was so frightened that he wouldn't let us touch him for several days. He coward from any human contact and was in pain from the bones protruding out from under his skin and the hunger he had suffered, but we knew his spirit was in there somewhere.
Though his eyes were vacant, as if he had traveled to a better place, we continued to searched to find him. As the days went on, our hopes of bringing him back became better. He allowed us to touch him, then pet him, and finally, he began to approach us for affection.
The day he actually had the strength to jump up on me to be petted, I cried. From that day on I knew he would be OK. He was adopted by a wonderful family that has him as a house dog, and even goes to work with them daily!
To think he was within days of crossing the rainbow bridge!
Big Boy, now named BO, weighs in at almost 100lbs now! He recently won second place in an international dog photo contest! Now that is progress from his former self!

This is why I do Rescue!

FOSTER HOMES NEEDED!!!!!

I am currently looking for foster homes for large breed dogs as well as GSD's. We are becoming over whelmed by beautiful dogs that just need a safe home until a family can be found. If you live in the area and feel that you can help, please email me ASAP. Please remember that these dogs need a lot of exercise and care. All Vet care will be provided, but due to limited resources, no other financial assistance is available.

We are currently very limited in what we can take in to rescue.
I do not deal with breeders!

If you are trying to place a GSD, you may email me and I can help you find a resource to help you.

PLEASE LOOK AT YOUR LOCAL SHELTERS AND LEAVE YOUR NAME SAYING YOU ARE INTERESTED IN A GSD!

Funding And Volunteers Needed!!! ASAP!!!

If you would like to help, but can't do foster care, we need sponsors as well. Many dogs need rescue funds to pull them from shelters and provide them with vet care. Each dog usually runs about 70.00 to rescue them from the shelter and have them spay/neutered and get their shots. Any thing can help. Five dollars here and there adds up quick.

If you are able to foster other types of animals, like cats, kittens, puppies, or smaller breed dogs, please contact us and we will forward it to the Lawrence County Humane Society of KY. They are overflowing with animals that need foster homes.(www.petfinder.org/shelters/ky26.html)

Who We Are

We are an established organization (8 years and counting), no-profit, 501c3, group of volunteers (mostly me and my husband) that are dedicated to the placement of German Shepherds and other animals ,that have been rescued from shelters across the country or released by owners`. Our entire organization is run with donations, volunteer work, and our VISAS!!! We get NO federal or state funding of any kind, so our resources are limited. We run on the donations of kind people that have a soft spot for the dogs we rescue. We only accept dogs that are in Kill Shelters, due to the limited space. OWNER SURRENDERS ACCEPTED ONLY IF THERE IS ROOM OR A FOSTER HOME AVAILABLE. (SORRY) A $100.00 SURRENDER FEE ALSO WILL APPLY.

We encourage all new adopters to consider a pet from a shelter or a rescue organization. Every breed, age, and sex is available in shelters across the nation. Usually transports can be arranged through volunteers across the nation. With time and consistence, your dream pet can be rescued from a shelter. We also work very closely with the Lawrence County Humane Society of KY. Please check out their pets on petfinder also. (www.petfinder.org/shelters/ky26.html)

Where do the rescued German Shepherds come from?
Our rescued dogs come from many different places; but we only accept dogs that come from animal shelters due to the limited time they are given to find homes. Many people do not realize the time, energy, and financial commitment necessary to properly care for a companion animal and they are family members for their lifetime. It is very important to consider the cost of food and health care, as well as the time you have available to spend with your new companion, before applying to adopt.

How do I adopt from Dumas GS Rescue?
You will complete an adoption application. Please make sure that your application is complete. The information that your application provides will help us make the right match for your family and lifestyle. Please keep in mind that false or withheld information may cause us to void your application. If in the event that false information is given, and we are made aware of it, you surrender all rights to the dog placed in your care.

How much does it cost to adopt from Dumas GS Rescue?
The adoption fee varies, depending on the various costs. The adoption fee can be expected to range from $85.00-$150.00. This fee includes the sterilization procedure, an examination by a veterinarian, and all vaccinations.

I have children and other pets, will a new Shepherd get along with them?
All of our dogs are in our home with our children and other pets, so we will have a good idea whether these dogs would be appropriate for your household. We also try to introduce all dogs to various conditions and situations, to insure the temperament of the dog. Our dogs are usually well socialized before they are adopted.

Does Dumas GS Rescue conduct home visits?
Yes. Home visits are conducted by volunteers, usually during evenings and weekends. A volunteer will contact you to arrange a visit at a convenient time. The visit ensures that you receive complete information about proper care of your new pet, and allows the volunteer to see the premises where the dog will live and the condition of any animals already in the home. It is necessary that all cats and dogs currently owned are up-to-date on vaccinations, and dogs must be current on heartworm preventative. It is necessary for the entire household, including roommates, to be present for the home visit.

How do I see the dogs available for adoption?
If your adoption application is approved, the Adoption Coordinator volunteer will help you choose a great dog for your household. If you are interested in a dog listed on the petfinder web site, contact the Adoption Coordinator by email to arrange to visit the dog. It is important that all household members, especially young children, have a chance to meet the dog being considered for adoption. No adoption will be made final until everyone living with the potential dog has been introduced.

I live in another state, can I still adopt a dog from Dumas GS Rescue?
Yes, we do out of area adoptions, but all of the above procedures are still followed. You are also required to come to visit the dog prior to adoption. We will not meet you with the dog, due to the added stress on the dog. We don't feel this is an accurate evaluation of temperament or character of the dog. You must make arrangements to visit the dog here in KY.

When do I get to bring my new family member home?
After your adoption application has been approved, all members of your household have visited with the dog you would like, and everyone is in agreement, you will pay the adoption fee, sign the adoption agreement, and bring your new family member home. If your new dog has not been spayed or neutered yet, the procedure will be done prior to you bringing the dog home.
