Jack's Angels is an all breed non profit rescue organization established in 2001. We are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming pets in the Austin, TX area. We have expertise in Chihuahuas, Boston Terriers, power breeds (including pit bull breeds), pregnant animals, and hand rearing newborn animals.

Featured Fur Angel-
An overlooked angel still needs a home!
It could be because he's a little shy, it could be because he's not easily identified as a specific breed or mix, it could be because he's black (statistics show they're the last to get adopted). We're not sure why Bartley has been with us more than a year and nobody has offered him a forever home. We are particularly baffled since he's a volunteer favorite and many of us would adopt him as our own if we had room for one more. Please give Bartley a look if you're looking to adopt a great little dog.

More About Bartley:

  • He is most likely a mix of Papillon and Dachshund.
  • He has short legs, a long body, big standing ears, and a long tail.
  • He's approximately 3 years old and weighs just 11lbs, full grown.
  • He gets along with other dogs and cats.
  • He may need time to warm up to new people and is most comfortable around older children (10+ years old) and adults.
  • He is a calm, yet playful and affectionate.
  • He is crate trained but not fully housebroken.
  • He may bark at you when he first meets you but he's non-aggressive and otherwise rarely barks.

Bartley is available for adoption through Jack's Angels. However, he's sponsored by Barking Hound Village and is available for visitation 7 days a week, during their hours of business. Please call ahead at (512) 477-3647 before stopping by.

    Jack's Angel's News-

Lack Of Funds Threatens Our Operation!

We began our efforts in 2001 to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals in need. The rehabilitation of our rescued animals often includes expensive medical treatment. Many times we've taken in animals who we knew would require special medical care but we've also often we faced the unexpected medical issues that arise. In either case, we always provided the optimum level of care. When donated rescue funds weren't available, our founder always picked up the tab. As many face economic hardship, we are no exception. Our personal resources are depleted and like most other nonprofit organizations, we have seen a decline in donations. Not only is our ability to continue our rescue efforts in the future threatened, but we also must raise funds now to maintain the optimum level of care to the rescued animals already in our foster homes.

Additionally, we must raise funds to assist with outstanding medical expenses for some of the animals we've already helped. A list of a few of those we've recently helped is below.

Diamond, who has been with Jack's Angels longer than any other animal, swallowed a towel and required $1,200 emergency surgery and medical care. $2,500 had already been spent to board her when her adopters (at no fault of her own) suddenly returned her and we did not have a foster home available.

Aspen developed disc problems and other serious and unexpected medical issues while in our care that required expensive treatment.

Reggie was diagnosed with a blood parasite that caused damage to her heart. She required further diagnostics and treatment through a specialist, well exceeding $1,000. She needs additional follow-up testing and a special spay surgery (due to her fragile heart).

Twister had been badly neglected. Initial medical testing and care, as well as later medical testing and care when he suddenly developed seizures, exceeded $2,000.

Jonas and his sister Kylie, who sadly did not survive, had parvo virus and required more than $2,000 in emergency medical care.

Tella was pregnant when rescued and delivered her puppies the very next day. Whelping complications resulted in $800 in emergency medical care.

Nicholson had a head injury when rescued and required $700.00 surgery.

Marcy had heartworms and a respiratory infection when rescued. More than $1,000 was spent trying to save her precious life.

Hyden was born tiny and weak. In his three months of life, we spent many $100's trying to get a diagnosis, hoping to save his precious life.

Please help us help them. If you can donate, even a little, it truly helps. We (and the animals) cannot thank you enough. You can make a donation by clicking the "donate" button below.

    Make A Donation-
We ended the year 2007 and have begun the year 2008 with an overdrawn account after rescuing dozens of animals last year, including ones that required surgeries for orthopedic problems, heartworm treatment, treatment for skin conditions, hospitalization for viral infections, and other expensive medical care. So many animals' lives were saved but many more, including ones currently in our care, need routine and special medical treatment. In order to continue our efforts in 2008, we must raise funds ASAP. Without our donors, we cannot save more lives. Below is a list of donations we needs, in the order of which we need most.

  • Monetary Donations
  • Spay & Neuter Vouchers (see http://www.emancipet.org)
  • Dog Food (dry/wet)
  • Cat Food (dry/wet)
Pet food note: We can use all high quality brands, including but not limited to Healthwise, Innova, California Natural, Wellness, Wysong, Flint River Ranch, Canidae, Solid Gold, and Natural Balance.
  • Heartworm, Flea, & Tick Preventive (veterinary clinic brands only)
  • Pet Bedding & Towels
  • Collars & Leashes - Chews & Toys
  • Shampoo & Grooming Tools
  • Pet Store Gift Cards

    Adoption Requirements-

  • You Must Meet All General Requirements
Below are our general requirements and are to be met by any potential Jack's Angels adopter. Should you not meet each of our general requirements, you are not eligible to adopt a Jack's Angels' pets. Additional special requirements may apply for any individual Jack's Angels pet to ensure they are placed an an appropriate home.

  • You must complete Jack's Angels' adoption process
Our adoption process is posted above. Each potential adopter must complete Jack's Angels adoption process.

  • You must live within 200 miles of Austin, TX
Since Jack's Angels requires that one of their representatives who is familiar with the pet's specific needs attends the home visit, adoptions within 100 miles of Austin, TX are highly preferred and may be required, depending on various circumstances. Adoptions up to 200 miles from Austin, TX may be considered in certain situations. Adoptions farther than 200 miles of Austin, TX will not be considered, under any circumstances.

  • You must be 18 years or older to apply for the adoption of a Jack's Angels pet
Jack's Angels will not adopt out pets to children or for the intention of a child being the only caregiver to the pet. All too often, pets are rehomed in these situations when the child loses interest in the pet. All applicants must be 18 years of age or older and ready to make a life long commitment to a pet. Please keep in mind that dogs and cats commonly live to be 10 to 15 years of age. If a child will be the main caregiver for a pet, the parents must be involved in the process including filling out the adoption application and signing the adoption contract. The parent must also be wanting and willing to care for the pet if the child moves out, leaves for college, or is unable or unwilling to care for the pet at any point in the future.

  • Pets are not to be adopted as gifts
In order to ensure our pets are placed in a home that is the best match for them and that can meet their specific needs, the person wanting to adopt the pet must be the one who goes through out adoption process.

  • Jack's Angels pets are adopted only as companion animals
Jack's Angels will not adopt out animals for breeding, hunting, guarding, or fighting animals. However, we encourage working jobs, such as therapy pets, and dog sports, such as flyball and agility, when the specific pet is appropriate for the job.

  • Jack's Angels pets are not available to outdoor only homes
All pets must be primarily indoor pets. We never adopt out pets as outdoor only pets. Often with kitties, we require indoor only homes. With commonly stolen breeds, such as pit bulls, adopters must only allow them outdoors when they are being supervised. Tiny dogs also must never be left outside when unattended for that reason as well as the high risks of easily escaping a fenced yard, being hurt or killed by other animals, as well as other serious risks. Pets that are not at high risk must be safely confined in a fence when left unattended, not chained or tied. Outdoor only pets are unlikely to get the attention, socialization, guidance, and interaction needed to have a good quality and happy life. This often leads to them becoming destructive, noisy, escape artists, and even aggressive. If you currently have any outdoor pets, you are not eligible to apply for the adoption of a Jack's Angels pet.

  • Jack's Angels adopters must provide all their pets with medical care as needed
Adopters must be willing to keep all their pets, including ones not aquired via Jack's Angels, current on all vaccinations. They also must be willing to provide all their pets with monthly heartworm preventive year-round. Due to Texas' climate, both dogs and cats are at risk for this disease which is transmitted via mosquitoes. Heartworm treatment for dogs is extremely expensive and high risk. There is no treatment for cats. Without treatment, heartworm disease is fatal. Adopters must also be willing and able to provide all of their pets with any other medical care as needed, including unexpected and emergency veterinary care.

  • Jack's Angels adopters must keep all pets on a high quality diet
Your pets' diets play a huge role in pet's general health and therefor we expect all adopters to provide all of their pets with a high quality diet. These foods should contain no chemical preservatives, no by-products, no fillers, and no additives.

The list below contains but is not limited to foods that we believe to be of high quality.

    - Natural Balance- -Flint River Ranch- -Canidae- -Innova- -Wysong- -Wellness- -California Natural-

The list below contains but is not limited to some of the popular foods that we do not believe to be of high quality.

-Science Diet- -Purina- -Pedigree- -IAMS (please visit http://www.iamscruelty.com)- -Eukanuba-

  • All pets in the home must be spayed or neutered
All pets within the home must be spayed or neutered with the exception of pets that are currently competing in confirmation dog shows and that have breed appropriate health certifications or pets that cannot be anesthetized for health related reasons. Documentation of this status will be required. All pets adopted from us will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption or be adopted out on a spay/neuter contract in which they must be spayed/neutered by 6 months of age and documentation of this must be provided.

    Adoption Process-
Our adoption process, explained below, is required for each pet's adoption.

  • STEP 1 - Read Our Requirements
Our general adoption requirements are posted above. If you do not meet these requirements, you are not eligible to adopt a Jack's Angels' pet.

  • STEP 2 - View Our Adoptable Pets Online
Detailed biographies, along with pictures, for each of Jack's Angels adoptable pets are listed within our website. We ask that potential adopters read all the information provided for any pets they may be interested in adopting PRIOR to making an inquiry. We usually indicate a change of a pet's status on their individual page within 48 hours of it changing. Chances are if the pet is listed available then he/she is still searching for a forever home.

  • STEP 3 - Make An Adoption Inquiry
If you are interested in the adoption of a Jack's Angels pet, and have already read all the information provided for the pet(s) you are interested in, now is the time to make an inquiry. Feel free to ask us any questions you may have that were not answered within the pets biography. Please also tell us a little about your home, family, and your pet history. You may contact us by E-mail at JacksAngelsTX@aol.com anytime or by phone at (512) 292-4276 from 8:00am to 10:00pm. We are a volunteer based organization so please allow us 48 hours to respond to E-mails and voicemails.

  • STEP 4 - Meet & Greet
Each Saturday or Sunday, Jack's Angels hosts a Meet and Greet event for potential adopters to meet and interact with some of our adoptable pets. See our meet and greet schedule below for details on our next event and to learn which pets will be attending. Adoption applications are available onsite, although Jack's Angels does not do same day adoptions. If the pet you are wanting to meet is not scheduled to be at the event, you are welcome to contact Jack's Angels to request that the pet attend. If that is not possible or if you are not able to attend our event, you are welcome to request an individual visit with the pet which can be scheduled at the availability of the foster family.

  • STEP 5 - Submit An Adoption Application
If you meet our general requirements and after communicating with a Jack's Angels representative, both potential adopter and Jack's Angels representative feel the pet may be a good match, you will be asked to fill out an adoption application. An application may be provided at the Meet and Greet event, during an individual visit, or can be faxed or mailed upon request. We do not currently have our application available online. The application asks questions regarding your home, family, lifestyle, the care you will provide for your new pet, the care you provide for your current pet(s) and the care you have provided previous pet(s) (if applies). Although our application may seem lengthy, we feel it benefits both the adopter and the pet by helping us make a great match. So please take your time and answer the questions to the best of your ability. In order to ensure each pet is placed with the family that is most suitable for him/her, we do not place pets on a "first come first serve basis." We may accept multiple applications for a particular pet and through our adoption process will determine which person/family will best meet the particular pet's needs.

  • STEP 6 - The Application Review
Usually within 7 days of the adoption application being submitted, a Jack's Angels representative will review it. We will contact you with any concerns or follow-up questions we might have. The information you provide within your application will help us determine the suitability of the adoption of the specific pet(s) you are interested in. If we feel the pet(s) you are interested in does not match with your family, home, and/or lifestyle, or if we choose to place the pet with another applicant, we may suggest another Jack's Angels pet in which we feel is more suitable. Jack's Angels reserves the right to refuse the adoption at any point in the adoption process.

  • STEP 7 - Personal And Veterinary Reference Checks And Landlord Approval Confirmation
If you currently have any other pets or have had any pets in your adult life, Jack's Angels will contact their veterinarian to verify that all pets owned, past and present, were given proper medical care. We also contact the three personal references you provide in your application for their opinions on your pet ownership skills. If you do not own your home, verbal and/or written permission to own a pet must be provided from your landlord. We ask that all potential adopters confirm with their landlord that they are allowed to have a pet BEFORE beginning our adoption process to save both us and you time. Please specifically inquire about possible size and breed restrictions if they may apply to the pet you are wanting to adopt.

  • STEP 8 - The Home Visit
A representative of Jack's Angels will bring the pet to your house for a home visit. Jack's Angels requires that all people and pets residing in the house be there for the home visit. The appropriateness of your home environment and yard will be assessed at this time. The behavior and reaction of the pet in the potential adopter's environment will also be assessed. Jack's Angels does not leave pets on the first home visit. We do not want either party to make a placement decision on the spot. Within a few days of the home visit, a Jack's Angels representative will contact you to discuss any questions and/or concerns regarding the home visit. The adopter will have the opportunity to respond to each concern and based on their responses, the representatives will make a recommendation to the Jack's Angels adoption team. Following that, the Jack's Angels adoption team will discuss whether or not the home is an appropriate placement for the pet. If it's determined to be a match, the foster to adopt period and placement plan will be discussed with the potential adopter.

  • STEP 9 - The Contract & Foster-To-Adopt Placement
The foster-to-adopt period (usually three weeks) will begin when all other steps have been completed to the satisfaction of the Jack's Angels representative. This period allows the adopter to bring the pet into their home and give them the one to three weeks that most pets need to adjust to a new environment and begin to display behavior true to his/her personality. This time also allows Jack's Angels and the adopter to make sure the pet will adjust to their environment and that the adopter can adjust to the needs of the new pet. Both parties must agree that the placement is being made with the intention of it becoming a permanent placement. The foster-to-adopt period is NOT designed for potential adopters to "try a out a new pet." The foster-to-adopt period is in case of any unforeseen problems such as animals in the home not being compatible. At the time of the foster-to-adopt placement, specific terms of the adoption will be discussed and a foster-to-adopt contract will be signed by all parties. The pet's predetermined adoption donation fee will be collected and held until the foster-to-adopt period has been completed and the adoption is finalized. Prior to the completion of the foster to adopt period, Jack's Angels will conduct at least one follow up visit to evaluate the success of the placement. During this period, the pet will still be considered part of our foster program, although not advertised as adoptable, and Jack's Angels reserves all rights to the pet. If the adoption is determined to be unsuitable for any reason, by Jack's Angels or the adopter, during this time, either party can cancel the adoption. In this event, the pet must be returned directly to Jack's Angels and the adoption donation fee, held during the foster to adopt period, returned to the adopter.

  • STEP 10 - The Finalization Of The Adoption
Upon the completion of the foster to adopt period, if all parties agree that the placement is a success, the adoption becomes final. Congratulations on your new Jack's Angels pet!

    How You Can Help-
    Volunteering
JFAT is in constant need of volunteers. We need dog handlers & cat comforters/handlers for our "meet & greet" events held most weekends. Dog handlers are responsible for providing the dog with potty & water breaks, positive interaction, safe on a leash handling when not being contained in a puppy pen or crate, & allowing JFAT representatives to handle the adoption process. Cat comforters/handlers are responsible for providing the cat with calming attention, safe handling when not being contained in a crate, & allowing JFAT representatives to handle the adoption process.
Responsible volunteer puppy/dog socializers are needed too. If you are a responsible pet lover but unable to foster, this is a great opportunity to help in a big way. Puppy/dog socializers take dogs on trips to pet stores, parks, or even their home to work on socialization and/or training. Puppies that have received less than 3 rounds of vaccinations are only to be taken to home environments to prevent exposure to puppy diseases.
Positive pet interactors, pooper scoopers, & etc are needed at our main foster home. We need volunteers that can donate time to provide positive interaction with pets, help with clean up, & more.

    Becoming A Foster Family
JFAT is in constant need of more foster homes. Our waiting list of pets in need is never ending. Many of the pets are at or soon to be at high kill shelters where pets are mostly euthanized due to lack of space. We are in need of foster homes for all sizes, ages, & types of cats & dogs.

    Making A Donation
Did you know that only in rare cases do pets' adoptions fees cover the cost incurred in their rescue? For healthy pets we typically incur costs of $200 or more in veterinary expenses alone. We often have pets that require additional medical treatment such as heartworm treatment, treatment for neglect, & treatment for injuries which can result in $100's more spent for their rescue. We have a no-kill policy for all stable tempered pets and do not euthanize pets due to health problems unless the pet is suffering & unlikely to make a recovery. We also provide all pets in our organization with high quality food, a crate with a pad or bed at night, safe fenced areas for exercise, chews, toys & much more. More difficult pets are provided with professional training to help make them more adoptable. Please help us continue to be able to provide these wonderful animals with the things they need while in our care by making a donation. No donation is too small & all donations are greatly appreciated by pets in need & their caregivers who cover most of the cost out of their own pockets. If you have gently used or new items that you would like to donate and are in the Austin area, please call Julie at (512) 689-5178 to have them picked up at your convenience. You can also send donations to the address below or make a quick & secure donation online by clicking the "Make A Donation" button below.
