Who We Are
The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center (AWC) is the only companion animal welfare organization servicing St. Croix, providing care to thousands of dogs and cats each year. We are a 501(c)3 non profit organization.
Since 1973, St. Croix AWC has worked to stop pet overpopulation and better the lives of St. Croix’s animals. Our mission is to promote the humane treatment of animals in the St. Croix community through education encouragement and enforcement.
We strive to fulfill this mission through our programs: low cost spay/neuter, animal control, humane education, and adoption programs both on-island and to the United States mainland via our Pets from Paradise program.
Our Programs
Low Cost Spay/Neuter: striving to effectively end the pet overpopulation crisis on St. Croix. Almost 2,000 animals received treatment from this program last year. We work with the local veterinary community and reach the low income households in need of this basic service.
Animal Control Services: responding to thousands of calls each year, our animal control wardens come to the aid of stray, neglected or abused animals.
Humane Education: teaching St. Croix’s children about animal care and how to recognize the signs of animal neglect and cruelty via classroom visits and presentations, after school programs and education-related special events.
Adoptions: finding homes for hundreds of needy animals. Homeless animals are adopted through our shelter facility and all animals are spayed or neutered before being adopted.
Pets from Paradise: placing adoptable animals with stateside partnership shelters. Our adoptable animals travel to the United States mainland to find new homes via partnership shelters with shortages. Travelers to St. Croix can help an island dog or cat find a new home at a partner shelter in the states.
