A Letter from our director Debbie Dix
Our little shelter is beginning our tenth year, like most we are struggling. Many of our patrons have passed on or moved to other interests. This all goes with the territory when running a not for profit operation.
We work to support ourselves with fundraisers throught the year and we are animal control for our county. We are the nicest facility for miles around. Our area is very ruraland each year we do more and more for less and less. The contract for animal control is $26, 250 this year. We budget carefully throughout the year for payroll, insurance, medicine, the list jsut goes on and on--as you can imagine we spend nearly four times our contracted amount in a years time.
One aspect of your shelter is our low kill rate. We as a humane society want to find every animal a home but as "animal control" this is not always realistic. The way we save as many as we do is to transport animals to other shelters and rescues in more populated areas.
If anyone has a passion for our cause to help our little shelter we would be so grateful. Gasoline to take the animals anywhere is becoming such a hardshipt. We are not sure if we can continue much longer. Come see our shelter we are a few very dedicated hard working bunch. Keep us close to your heart and if you have the means to help us we thank you.

Volunteers Needed
We are in serious need of help. We have the following volutneer positions open. Some require little time at the actual shelter others are at the shelter only. Many would be good for High School or College age students looking for volunteer service for scholarships and resumes. Stray Dogs
The shelter is the animal control for the county. However, individual towns within the county sometimes have their own arrangments for picking up stray dogs. Please call the shelter and ask for pick up of a stray, if there is somone else who does the pick up for your area the shelter staff will let you know. All stray dogs do come to the shelter to be held for claiming or adoption if not claimed.
Crawford County Pet Registration
Crawford county has started pet registration for county residents on December 1, 2004. Registration forms will be available at the shelter, the county annex on the square and can be mailed.

Monthly Shelter meeting
Our shelter holds a monthly meeting on the last Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend.
Adopting a friend
There is the $20 microchipping fee for all animals. This covers the cost of the chip and the registration.
The adoption fee for previously altered (ones that have been altered before coming into the shelter)cats is $25.
The adoption fee for previously altered dogs is $30 to $50.
The adoption fee for unaltered cats is $50 or more depending on the cost of the spay or neuter.
The adoption fee for unaltered dogs is the cost of the spay or neuter which runs between $65 to $140 depending on the weight of the dog at the time of surgery. There is also the $25 adoption fee to the shelter.
LAST CHANCE PETS
Time is of the essence with these pets. Please CALL the shelter at 618-544-8698 and speak with out director, Debbie Dix, if interested in one of them. All pets marked EX URGENT are in need of help immediatly as they are at risk of being put to sleep as the shelter fills to capacity.
We are a small county animal control shelter and must sometimes make tough decisions on who gets to stay and who must go if adoptions or qualified rescues are not forthcoming. We only have to move on in our small shelter because of space, not for lack of caring.

Donations
Now you can make donations online through PayPal.
You can specify a certain animal you would like to sponsor for shots, HW tests or altering. Or you can just make a general donation to help pay for medicines for the animals and other general care items the shelter is always in need of like wormers, flea and tick preventative etc.
Who We Are
The Crawford County Humane Society is an open door non-profit organization. Our goal is to provide a safe place for animals in need to go. We provide animal control for Crawford County which is a rural community. On our very limited budget we operate a shelter that works hard thru mostly volunteerism to have a very efficient loving shelter.
Sad to say we can not keep them forever. There is never enough space even though we would make you smile to see how creative we are finding a nook in our little building to keep a litter just one more day.
Some of our biggest challenges come in finding homes for the larger dogs like: Labs, Rotweillers, St. Bernards, etc. all of these animals are beautiful and of course have great temperments. All of our animals, be it a puppy, dog, kitten or cat, have great personalities and will respond to your affection with a bond that will last a lifetime. They know what you have done for them when you adopt one.
I could go on and on for some of us have worked and dreamed for ten years for this shelter, keeping animals in our homes, using our own funds and energy. Finally one gentleman donated a piece of ground and two sisters gave us the means to build the shelter. The rest is up to us. With your help we will find homes for your next best friend.
Hours are Tuesday through Saturday 1-5pm. We are closed Sunday and Monday.

We are located on rt 33 near the junction of rt 1 which is close to the IN border. We are an hour from Effingham, IL; two hours from Champaign, IL; about five hours from Chicago, IL; an hour from Terre Haute, IN and about two and a half hours from Indianapolis, IN.

General information
We receive a little over $25,000 from our county to provide animal control for this area. We can barely pay for basic expenses such as payroll, insurances, utilities, ect. with this money. None of the individual communities in the area pay for stray pick up or sheltering. We are always looking for ways to earn extra money for medicine and those rainy days. The shelter depends greatly on donations because the real cost of running the shelter is closer to $120,000 a year.
