Our Featured Pets..
This Fall's enrolees for the NEW LEASH ON LIFE program are a female Australian Shepherd X Border Collie and a female Labrador Retriever. TRIXIE is about 45lbs, with the natural tail of the Border Collie and has the 'eye' and drive typical of both breeds. MEMPHIS at about 70lbs pounds is what we call an 'English' Lab, big head, fat feet and otter tail. She is old enough to have outgrown some of the 'stupid puppy tricks' that very young labs seem to have a propensity for. Both dogs would do well with active, outgoing families with children old enough to participate with their new family member
Check their 'biographies' again in about a month - 6 weeks as they will be updated as they progress in the program.
Dogs, like children are a 'work in progress - but for their entire lives! First Grade comes and you send your child off to school. After the first 8 weeks they don't come home a brain surgeon, or at the end of 8 years, or at the end of 18 years!
but... the ITP Trainers have given these dogs a good foundation of the basics, with limits and boundaries for you to build on, and to grow with the dog, just like you do with your child. It's in your hands now, and TOP DOG ACADEMY will work with you if you need a 'refresher' course.

These are young, enthusiastic, energetic and exhuberant dogs; and while they are receiving excellent training there is not the opportunity to expose them to small children, cats or other small animals. We therefore suggest families with children 10 years of age or older. Check them out on Our Adoptable Pet List above.
Adoption of the NLOL Dogs is handled through 'PALS for PAWS' at : http://www.palsforpaws.org. or by e-mailing us at animalcontrol@cravencountync.gov
Graduation will be December 2 for these dogs.

A NEW LEASH ON LIFE
Craven/Pamlico Animal Services and Beaufort County Animal Shelter has partnered with Craven Correctional Institution to receive 4 dogs every 8 weeks. Craven-Pamlico Animal Services is also partnered with 70 West Veterinary Clinic in Havelock, PetSense Outlet next to Harris-Teeter in New Bern, and Pals for Paws Rescue which is handling the adoption applications and placement for the Craven-Pamlico dogs;
The New Leash On Life Program helps to reduce the homeless pet population and promotes adoption of unwanted animals, and provides education about responsible pet ownership. The inmates spend 8 weeks teaching the dogs basic obedience, house training and socialization skills, which make them better pets for adoption.
It is a community service program that provides an opportunity for prison facilities to partner with local government and nonprofit agencies to give inmates an opportunity to perform community service work while incarcerated. The partnership provides an opportunity for dogs to be trained for companionship. This program is number 1 in North Carolina
thanks to the wonderful CCI staff, Drake Parker of TOP DOG, the extended vet tech program and last, but not least, the trainer/inmates themselves. This is truly a TEAM effort!

To date they have graduated 100 wonderful dogs! Thank you to Drake Parker of TOP DOG Training Academy in Washington/Greenville NC for his dedication to not only the dogs, but to the development of the program and the young men that are the 'hands-on' trainers. This is truly a WIN/WIN situation for us all.
Who We Are
We are a division of Craven County Environmental Health Department, and serve as Rabies Control for Craven County and the Animal Shelter for most of Craven and Pamlico Counties stray or unwanted animals.
There are also several non-profit / volunteer rescue organizations in Craven, Pamlico, and other neighboring Counties. These groups have foster home programs for dogs, cats and sometimes other pets as well. Most can be found here on PETFINDERS or call us for additional information.
Because we see so many unwanted animals, we urge that you consider all aspects of pet ownership. Dogs and cats are an ongoing financial expense, as well as being time consuming. They need regular Veterinary checkups, they need training (Craven County Recreation Department offers several Dog obedience classes each year), they need responsible ownership, and last, but not least, they need love.
The acquisition of a pet should be a family decision; it is not a short term or temporary commitment to take an animal into your home. We strive to assist you in your choice of a dog or puppy, a cat or a kitten by asking questions regarding your lifestyle and your expectations of the pet.
By asking questions we are not being intrusive, we want to help you make the right decision, for you and for the pet. We hope that you will allow us to help you make that decision.
Our staff usually knows some of the personality traits of the animals in our care as the majority of the pets are actually surrendered by their original owners. Reasons range from moving, to children’s allergy, to just not having the time it takes to provide the companionship and care an animal requires.
We are ‘Rescue Friendly’ and will be glad to discuss our ‘rescue’ policies with a representative from your group. If you are a 501c3 group you will need to provide us with a copy of your EIN letter.
