THINKING OF GETTING A DOG?
Check out this website before you make a decision. This site is designed by the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and connects potential adopters with all the crucial information needed to make a smart, humane choice about getting a dog. The goal is to put the power to stop puppy mills in dog buyer's hands.

Get a deal on Wonderful Wednesday!
Adult cats (older than 6 months) can be adopted for only $50 on Wednesdays, if they are spayed or neutered and ready to go home. We hope to see you between 1-5 PM!

Now would probably also be a good time to remind people of the importance of spaying and neutering. If you or someone you know has un-fixed cats, please come and talk to us. We can help.

Kids help!
THANK YOU K-KIDS! On Wednesday January 25, 2012 we had wonderful visitors at the shelter, about 25 members of SSES K-Kids Club came to present a cheque for $336.62. The club raised money before Christmas with a yard sale, sock hop, a fruit basket raffle and selling crafts. The children were all in Grades 3-5 and accompanied by District 10 Community Schools Co-ordinator, Judey MacDonald. See a photo and story in today's Telegraph Journal! Thanks so much K-KIDS!

Isaac Martin has donation $60.00 for the cats! He celebrated his 7th birthday and asked to be given money to donate to us. .We are so pleased to see the young people of Charlotte County supporting the shelter, and grateful for his thoughtfulness. Thanks so much Isaac!

On October 21, a young girl came into the shelter with $35.00 in pennies which she had collected and rolled herself. 12 year old April Urquhart wanted to help the animals. The animals are very happy with the results and we really appreciate the support! It is great to see kids getting involved. Thanks April!

In other news...

AN INCREDIBLY GENEROUS DONATION!
CCSPCA would like to acknowledge the amazing generosity of a dedicated supporter who wishes to remain anonymous, for the donation of an entire A/C plus heating system for the shelter. This will make such a difference to the comfort of the animals and of the staff and volunteers who spend so much time there taking care of the animals. It should also help to reduce our operating expenses. Support such as this cannot be measured in dollars alone. Thank you so much!

Jean Calder

The Charlotte County SPCA is honouring Jean Calder for her life long commitment to animals and her support of the CCSPCA. Although Jean was a dog person, she enjoyed coming to the shelter to visit the cats and leaving a donation. Her bequest is gratefully acknowledged and will assist the CCSPCA in its mandate of helping the stray cats and dogs of Charlotte County. We are naming the front dog room The Jean Calder Room in her memory

Provincial Dog Licences Available
Did you know that dogs outside town limits require a provincial dog licence? These can be picked up at the Charlotte County Animal Shelter for $15/year. Licences are required by law and are a good way to ensure that your dog will be returned to you should it ever get away.

Looking for gift ideas?!
What to give the person who has everything? How about a donation to the shelter in their name? They receive a lovely card, the animals receive help and you get a tax receipt. Everybody wins! To pick up donation cards, please stop by the shelter! Thank you for thinking of us.

Volunteers needed!
Are you an animal lover who cannot adopt a new cat, with time on your hands, especially on SATURDAY and alternate SUNDAY mornings? If you are over 18 and able to commit to coming to the shelter once per week for 2-3 hours, we’d love to talk to you! The shelter is always full of stray cats and kittens and we would like to have at least one volunteer, if not 2, each morning. Call in the shelter and ask about volunteering. This includes feeding, cleaning cages and of course CUDDLING!! Hope to see you.

Help is needed with either cats or dogs as well as general work around the shelter, whether on a regular basis or on a 'when you can come' (during shelter hours) basis. The dogs always need walking. The ‘pay’ is cuddling with the animals and knowing you’ve helped make an animal’s life better. Please call, email or stop by the shelter if interested!

Want to help?
Fundraising is an ongoing, very important part of running our shelter (especially as we do not receive any government funding). We are in need of people who can help by taking on the 'job' of coordinating and organizing fundraisers for us (one, or more - it's up to you!). We have a long list of existing fundraisers we'd love to have help with, and new ideas are always welcomed - especially if you'd like to organize the event yourself. Helpers are always appreciated and coordinators even more so! Many of the fundraisers we do are quite easy to organize, we just need the extra people to head them up. We can provide details, advice and support - just let us know if you'd like to help!

Shelter Wish List!
We always need things like paper towel, dry cat, kitten, dog and puppy food, wet cat and kitten food (pate type please), non-clumping cat litter, garbage bags, bleach, HE laundry detergent, change rollers, thank you cards and Canadian Tire money. We appreciate it very much!

Youth volunteers
We really appreciate all the young people who are interested in helping at the animal shelter. Currently we are able to accept volunteers between 10 and 18 years of age, if they are accompanied by a parent at all times. There are many other ways younger people can help the animals as well - just click here!

Now accepting LAPTOPS and TABLETS, in addition to used printer and toner cartridges, cell phones and digital cameras!
The THINKGREEN program now includes laptops and tablets!! in addition to used inkjet and toner cartridges, cell phones and digital cameras These are sent in to be recycled in exchange for $$ for the CCSPCA. Money from this project will fund our programs of finding homes for the homeless animals of Charlotte County. So if you have any old inkjet or toner printer cartridges, cell phones or digital cameras, laptops or tablets, just drop them off at the shelter! Not only will you be helping us raise money, you'll be helping the environment as well! Items can be dropped off at the Charlotte County Animal Shelter at 112 Prince William Street in St. Stephen. Thank you!

LOST DOG OR CAT?
Please contact both Mike Shannon at 466-5031 and the NBSPCA at 1-877-722-1522. They are responsible for picking up dogs running at large in Charlotte County. Mike Shannon is also contracted by the town of St. Stephen to pick up unidentified cats. If you have lost a dog or cat, your first call should be to them. You should also contact vet clinics in our area (St. Stephen and St. Andrews) - sometimes an animal can be injured and picked up by someone passing by and brought to a vet clinic further away than you would think your animal could travel. We also have a Lost and Found list, so you should contact us as well. Also check Petfinder.com's 'lost and found' section in their classifieds.

HOW TO ADOPT
Adopting a pet is a long term commitment. Dogs live 8-12 years while cats can live an average of 15-20 years. During the time you own a pet, you may change jobs, move, get married or divorced, or have children. Don't let one of these events cause you to abandon or give away a pet. Pets become extremely attached to their owners and deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. Avoid hurting and causing undue stress to a helpless animal. Before you adopt, please seriously consider the long-term commitment involved.

Please contact us by email if you are a long distance phone call away.

During the adoption process, we will ask you questions about you, your family and your home and we will be glad to answer any questions you may have. Our adoption policy requires potential adopters to meet the animals in person, which means that all potential adopters must come to St. Stephen, NB. We do not ship animals anywhere. No animals will be held without an approved application form and adoption fee paid. Adoption fees can be paid by cash, cheque or online (use the 'Donation' button below). Please be aware, there is a minimum 24 hour waiting period after applications are received and processed before dogs can go home. PLEASE NOTE: at any given time there may be multiple applications on our pets. Our mission is to ensure our pets go to the home we feel is best suited to their needs based on their history, health, behaviour and temperament.

Dogs -
If you would like, you can begin the adoption process by sending us the application form. The form is available for download here. Please print, fill out, and fax to 506-465-9967. That way we can let you know if your application is approved prior to meeting the dogs. You are also welcome to come and meet the dogs without filling out the application form, but please be aware there may be adoptions pending on our animals at any time.

Cats -
All cats and kittens are spayed/neutered before they leave the shelter. The form is available for download here. You may print, fill out, and fax to 506-465-9967, or print in advance and bring to the shelter, or fill out at the shelter in person.

ADOPTION FEES
Cats have an adoption fee of $95 ($105 if paying with PayPal). This fee includes their spay/neuter, their rabies shot (if they are old enough), their first set of annual shots and a feline leukemia test for adult cats. Dogs and puppies are $125 ($135 if paying with PayPal), this also includes the animal's spay/neuter and first shots. Adopters may be responsible for their new animal's booster shots, if the animal has not been with us long enough to receive them. To pay by long distance through PayPal - please click on the 'Make a Donation' button directly below.
