. THIS IS AN URGENT PLEA FOR HELP. Our organization has been struggling for 3 years providing services for 3 parishes in La and citizens of Adams County in Miss. All with no funding from parish or local governments and no paid employee. Four volunteers operate the facility, respond to cases of animal cruelty and neglect, animals at large, aSsorted wildlife calls and speak at events schools etc . We are all exhausted. We apologize for our erratic and limited hours but it is difficult to remain open if we are responding to cruelty neglect calls. We will happily schedule appointments just contact us at 318-757-2297 or 318-481-2123.We will also begin posting the names and phone numbers of your local elected officials. Please take the time to call or write and ask that they support our efforts and ensure that the laws of our state are enforced. That is all we ask. Louisiana has one of the strongest anti-cruelty laws in the nation. But they are not enforced. We cannot do this alone. We need you. Please help. UPDATE Palmer Case Mrs Palmer was charged with 3 counts of animal cruelty. Far less than we were anticipating or hoping for given the 20 dead horses on her property, however we are very grateful to the DA 's office , the La Department of Ag Investigators and Hopeful Haven Horse Rescue that took two of the horses and testified in court. Mrs Palmer previously had 10 charges pending against her from actrion taken by the Sheriffs Department, Including our additional charges. UPDATE 1/20/07 While awaiting sentencing on animal cruelty charges Simple Battery charges have been filed against Mrs. Palmer for assaulting the Director of CAWS while checking on the condition of her horses. This only highlights what we have said all along that animal abuse and human violence are connected. The link between the 2 is well documented for more info visit www.hsus.org and learn about the link between animal cruelty and human violence through their First Strike campaign. UPDATE Debbie Palmer sentencing Feb. 14, 2007 Ms Palmer was sentenced to reduce her herd to know more than 10 horses, pay fines and reimburse the vets and Horse Haven and complete 40 hrs 8 hr days at LSU Vet school in order to learn the proper care of animals. She has 60 days to reduce her herd. UPDATE 3/15/07 It may seem unbelievable but once again calls coming in regarding the burning of a horse carcass and clearly visible from the highway, horses on Ms Palmers property in very bad shape resulted in CAWS and deputies from CPSO finding and documenting 8 cases many horses that we had gotten into shape and then had to return. It was heartbreaking to see these horses in the same or worse condition. A young injured foal we had nursed 10 mths ago was found to be very near to death, its hair falling out. It was unbelievable. The deputy and the livestock brand commission returned to view the horses, told ms Palmer they would be back in the am with a vet. She changed the locks and the baby along with several others that would constitute more cruelty charges are now gone. Please call and demand that this horrible situation be dealt with. Ms Palmer is obviously not well and should not be allowed to own any animals. How much longer must they suffer and why? Contact these local representatives to urge them to prosecute and punish Mrs. Palmer to the fullest. Concordia Parish Sherrif Randy Maxwell 318-336-5231 Concordia Parish DA John Johnston 318-336-5526 Judge Leo Boothe 318-336-7121 UPDATE Dog Fighting Bart Schneider Black River Kennels longtime pitbull fighter. 43 dogs, fighting equipment ,training manuals, 43 dogs were euthanized as contraband under Louisiana Law. One of the saddest days of my life. UPDATE Schneider was convicted by jury and remains in jail. ADA Brad Burget did an incredible job on this case. Expert witnesses were brought in from the LASPCA in New Orleans and the Louisiana State Police. We are so grateful for all their efforts. . We thank each one of you who have taken the time to read this post. We are so grateful for your support. < H3>Who We AreWe are a non-profit animal welfare agency with a no-kill goal. No-kill means to us that we will euthanize no healthy, adoptable animal. We will strive tirelessly to achieve this goal and we will not be happy with less. " To Communicate, to Educate & to Motivate" This is how we will achieve our goal. As much as we wish to be an agency that does not have to euthanize healthy adoptable animals at this time it is impossible. In order to be a no-kill facility an agency must limit the number of animals admitted. Once full, animals are turned away. We feel it is important to never turn an animal away. Doing so would ensure they would be dumped in the woods to starve or worse. Here with us they will be assured a safe and most importantly a loving place if even for a short time. Currently we are housing all animals in what is our adoption building. We received a $50,000 grant from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and anticipate continuing work on the partially completed building and beginning a Spay Neuter Program for low income residents. Foster families can help us save lives. Animals that move into foster care for a short time 2 weeks -a couple of mths free up space in the building for another animal. Please consider this rewarding experience. All costs including food & medical care will be covered by the shelter. Saving a life is easy just call 318-757-CAWS, 318-757-4205 or 601-445-0712 and leave a message. We would like to speak to your club, classroom etc... to spread the word and work of CAWS and promote humane and responsible treatment of animals. Please feel free to call or e-mail. For membership: Single $10 Family $15 Business $100 Mail to: CAWS 1212 First St Ferriday, La 71334 or call and we will send you a brochure and application. Volunteers do not have to be involved with actual animal care if you do not desire as we have many, many things that need to be done.
