Cat Assistance, Inc. - Who We Are

Cat Assistance is a small private cat shelter in Westchester County, NY. We have cats and kittens for adoption, most of them have been rescued from private owners who are forced to give up their pets. Cat owners give up their cats for various reasons: such as they are moving and the new landlord does not allow pets or someone in the family has developed an allergy to the cat. We are now part of the Mayor's Alliance in New York City and we rescue cats and kittens from the Center for Animal Care and Control. Our hope is to end the euthanizing of all adoptable pets in New York City. We also rescue cats from many local shelters including: Yonkers shelter, Mt Vernon, Harrison, Briarcliff, and Greenwich Animal Control. When these shelters become overcrowded some of them would be forced to euthanize and instead call us.

New home being sought for one-eyed blind cats

Mr. Peaches and Mischief were left behind after their owner died in November of a blood clot in the lungs. "They need a place were they will be loved," said Joan Youchah, whose sister owned the pets. "They are a little shy, but they like company." Youchah said her sister, Meryl, rescued the two while visiting Long Island, during a vacation, when they were kittens. for animals. Youchah was able to find a home for four of the cats, but the two blind brothers are still in need of an attentive pet owner andThe sister, an information-technology worker turned landscaper, owned six cats at the time of her death, since she loved to rescue and care new home. "They don't run across the room, but they are always checking things out and raise their head to look right at you when you open the door," Youchah said. "They are smart little cats." While under the care of the shelter, Zsach Ben Adi of Central Animal Hospital in Scarsdale removed the left eye of each cat to ease pain and discomfort from an untreated virus, he said. The veterinarian said the cats were exposed to a virus as kittens, which caused their left eyes to enlarge. Although the one-eyed, blind cats may have limitations, Adi said the two are nice, friendly pets. "Animals get by pretty well being blind," Adi said. "Once they learn the environment, they do very well and live quite normal lives."
