Our Pet List

Have a Heart, Save a Heart!

We currently need to raise money for heartworm treatment for three of our residents: Molly, Nana and Loki. Heartworms are caused by mosquito bites that release heartworm larvae into the dog. Heartworms can cause many health problems and can even be fatal, if untreated. We do not have a veterinarian on staff, but we do have a good relationship with a few veterinary clinics. Heartworm treatment costs between $230 and $350 depending on weight. Since all of the dogs in need are on the bigger side, we need to raise over $1,000.

Please send donations to us at:

Kitten and puppy Food
Dawn Liquid Dish Detergent
Bleach
Swiffer (or generic) pads - wet or dry
Large Garbage Bags, brooms, and garden hoses
Food, treats and toys for both cats and dogs
Old blankets and towels for bathing and bedding
Hot dogs (for giving medication)

If you have ever considered recycling your soda/beer cans, please bag them up and leave them at our front gate. Recycling is an ongoing fund raiser and we would be very grateful for your donations. Many of the animals that come to us are injured and/or sick and recycling helps to pay our veternarian bills.

VOLUNTEERS are needed to help with adoptions at PetsMart, as well as general help around the shelter. Do you have a couple of "free" hours? Volunteers are needed to help answer phones. We are so busy cleaning and working with the dogs and cats that an extra pair of hands to help with the phone calls would be a tremendous help. Even a couple of hours a week would help. Volunteers should be 18 or older, or 16 and older with a parent's permission. If you are interested, please call us at 658-4821, or email us at casipets@sbcglobal.net.

Who We Are

The Converse Animal Shelter, Inc is a non-profit organization that was begun in 1979. All funds are used for the benefit of the animals. 18,000 helpless, abandoned, unwanted, sick and lost animals have come through its gate.

The shelter’s goals are to provide the local area with a humane facility in order to care for unwanted, abused and abandoned animals until such animals can be placed in suitable adoptive homes. To impress upon all members of the community the fact that the acquisition of a companion animal represents a ten to fifteen year commitment; animals are not disposable commodities. To educate members of the community in what constitutes responsible pet ownership, emphasizing the benefits of the spaying/ neutering of animals and providing information in pet care, training and maintenance.

Pets, as living and feeling entities, represent a facet of our society for which its citizens are totally responsible. A community showing compassion and responsibility for its animals represents a society which extends these attributes to all of its members. When someone abandons a box full of puppies or kittens along the roadside, we’re the ones who take them in, treat their fire ant bites and injuries and feed them. Our animal shelter is dedicated to the humane and loving treatment of strayed and homeless animals. We are a non-profit organization operating on donations from caring individuals, businesses and friends. We use donations to pay for dog food, cat food, and special diets for kittens, puppies, and sick animals, surgery, vet care, immunizations, worming and medicines. We ensure the animals we adopt out are healthy and protected against diseases.

A complete record is kept of lost or found animals, as well as people who have a special animal they want or those who want to place an animal. Every effort is made to match up owner to animal.

Adopting a Friend

Our dogs and cats have been fully vaccinated and have been given worming medication.

Dogs and cats over the age of 6 months have been spayed/neutered .

When adopting puppies/kittens you are required to sign a sterilization agreement.

Dogs over the age of 6 months have been heartworm tested.

Cats over the age of 6 months have been tested for feline leukemia.

Our cats are litter boxed trained and very social. We recommend they be adopted as inside cats. This is the only way you can insure their safety.
