Shelter News

September 6, 2008 - Bang the drums and blow the horns - our sweet Cassie has found a home at last. After 10 YEARS of waiting, this wonderful dog has finally found a wonderful forever home, and we are so happy for her. Way to go, Cassie!!!

Butch!

Butch is a friendly, energetic, active boy who would love to have a family of his own to love and play with. Butch is housetrained and about 5 years old.

Meems!

Meems was adopted from us about 2 years ago as a kitten and was recently returned because his family was having a baby and didn't want to care for him anymore. He's a really gorgeous cat - mostly white with a gray tabby tail. Meems is a little shy, but very friendly once he gets to know you. He still doesn't understand why his family abandoned him, and we'd really love to find him a forever home soon. Meems is about 2 years old.

Seniors are Special!

Have you ever considered adopting a senior dog? Senior dogs are often much easier to live with than young dogs. I mean, let's face it - puppies are adorable, but they're also a lot of work! Older dogs are often already housetrained (and if they aren't, they're often easier to train than puppies!), they are much less likely to chew up your house while you're away, and they are oh so grateful for a second chance in a safe and loving home of their own. At Callaway Hills we have several wonderful, loving older dogs who have lived at the shelter all or most of their lives. These dogs are well treated at the shelter, but they have no idea how good life can be in a home of their own, with their own person to love. How wonderful it would be if they could find out, and how rewarding it would be to show them what a loving home is really like!

We've had some really wonderful adoptions of older dogs lately, and the adopters have reported very few problems with the dogs adapting to their new surroundings. If shelter life is all they've ever known, it might take a few days for them to adjust. But pretty soon they all seem to realize that they've hit the jackpot and joyfully settle in to a life of soft beds, toys, air conditioning and the loving touch of their very own person. Ah, bliss!

Here is a letter from one such adopter, a wonderful person who adopted a 7 year old dog who had lived at the shelter her entire life, and who had never had a home of her own before. She writes:

I just wanted to let you and the others at the shelter know that Lyla is doing great! She was a little scared at first but has settled in to the daily routine. We have gone on several walks on the Katy trail. She sleeps at the foot of the bed and enjoys rawhide chews and being brushed. She has adapted well to all the changes and is a very lovable and happy dog.

And here's another letter!

I just wanted to let you know that Gwen (Maggie) has settled in from the first minute she arrived with no problems at all. She is so good and so loveable. She never has made any attempt to jump on the furniture or the bed and decided on her own to make her sleeping spot beside our bed on a throw rug that is there. She has the run of the house but pretty much stays wherever we are. We had to go out for two doctor appointments this morning and couldn't bear to contain her in the laundry room so left her to have the run of the house. She did just fine and was thrilled to see us when we got home, tail wagging like crazy but still no jumping on us. You did just great, recommending her for us. We are so lucky to have her.

I definitely would recommend a senior dog for anyone. Maggie is so easy - housebroken, doesn't jump on us or on the furniture, doesn't chew things up. She is a joy to have around the house and quickly made herself at home and a member of the family. We didn't have to go through all the agonies of training a young dog and the frustrations that can go along with it.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know, we love her and you can't have her back!!

Senior Spotlight

Bandit!

Bandit is a sweet, loving boy with a happy tail. He is very playful and friendly, and he loves attention and walks. Bandit is one of those poster boys for how wonderful most pit bulls are, and he would make a fantastic pet if someone would just give him the chance. He has spent almost his whole life in the shelter, but he's hoping that his special person is still out there somewhere. Bandit is about 8 years old.

The Callaway Hills Animal Shelter is a privately owned and operated no-kill shelter. We house and care for abandoned and unwanted animals until we can find them a loving home. Not all of our animals are listed here, as we usually have well over 100 animals in our facility at any one time. Please visit us to see them all!

How you can help

Like most shelters, we can always use some help in the form of donations. Here are the things we need - some are big and some are small, but we could use them all! Any contribution is most appreciated and it will always go for the good of the animals. We need: Loving homes! - financial contributions - Dogloos - Medium & large size adjustable collars - Leashes - Buckets - Grooming Supplies - Toys - Pillows - Blankets - Litterboxes - Indoor/outdoor non-slide rugs - Spray bottles. We are trying to get some Patented Kuranda Dog Beds for our pets while they wait for their forever homes. These beds are great for us because they are durable, chew proof and easy to clean. And it gives the dogs a comfy place off the concrete to sleep! Our dogs love them, but we only have a few so far. If you would like to donate a bed to us (at a reduced price) please click here.

Adopting a friend

Please contact us at callawayhills@yahoo.com for a copy of our application. We normally adopt within a 200 mile radius of the shelter, but will consider exceptions on a case-by-case basis. All potential adopters must fill out an application and provide personal and veterinarian references.

We do our best to match the right pet to the right home, so please understand that not all applications will necessarily be approved. A fenced yard may be required for some dogs. Because of safety issues, we only adopt cats to homes where they will be kept inside at all times. Existing pets of prospective adopters must be current on vaccinations or have a medical reason why vaccinations are not given.

We try to get the applications processed as quickly as we can, but with about 150 animals to care for daily, we do sometimes run short on time. It can take often take a week or more for us to finish an application. To speed up the process, you may want to have your personal references call the shelter instead of waiting for us to call them. When there is a delay, it's usually because we're having a hard time reaching the personal references. They can call us at (573) 896-4049, and if they get our answering machine, please ask them to identify themselves and leave us a message about what kind of pet owner they think you are.

Since it can take a while to process an application, you may want to submit the application and wait until you are approved before you visit, especially if you live some distance from the shelter. That wouldn't commit you to anything, but that way you would only have to make one trip to the shelter instead of having to come back later to pick up the pet after the application is approved.

If you have an existing pet that you would like to introduce to a pet at our shelter before adopting, we think that's a great idea! Dogs often do better when introduced in a neutral space, so neither of them feel like they have to defend their territory. But we do ask that you wait until after your application is approved to bring your pet to the shelter. At that time, we will set up a time with you to bring your pet out for an introduction.

Our normal adoption fee is $50.00, but some pets may be higher (as noted on their web page.) We love and value all our dogs, but due to the demand for small dogs, young dogs and some purebreds, we may charge higher adoption fees for them to help the others. The adoption fee includes spay or neuter, microchip, and basic vaccinations. Since we give our own vaccinations, your local laws may require you to have the rabies vaccination re-administered by a licensed veterinarian. If a puppy or kitten is too young to be fixed before it is adopted, the shelter will pay for the surgery when the pet is old enough. All of our dogs are tested for heartworm and receive heartworm preventative. All of our cats are tested for feline leukemia and FIV.

If, for any reason, you cannot continue to care for one of our animals at any time, he or she MUST be returned to the Callaway Hills Animal Shelter.
