WHY ADOPT FROM BIG CANOE ANIMAL RESCUE?

• We are a community no kill animal rescue.
• We have over 50 volunteers who work at the shelter 3 times a day, 7 days a week.
• We are small enough to give each dog or puppy individual attention each day.
• Our dogs receive the best Veterinary care. Each dog or puppy is up to date on shots.  All adult dogs are neutered or spayed.
• We have a financial program to spay or neuter puppies after adoption when they are ready.
• We take the time to match the right dog with the right owner.

Adopting A Friend

WHEN CAN YOU VISIT WITH OUR DOGS?

• Petsmart:  We are at the Canton Petsmart every 2^nd Saturday of the month.  (We recommend you call us to make sure we’ll be there.)
   
• Open House:  Our facility is open to the public the last Sat. and Sun. of the each month from 1 to 4 PM. We have additional days that we are also open . We recommend you call the shelter at 706-268-1346 to check on Open House dates.
     
• By Appointment:  We welcome folks to call to make an appointment to see a dog that they might have an interest in adopting if they can not go to Petsmart or come to Open House.  Call us at 706-268-1346

WHAT KIND OF HOME ARE OUR DOGS LOOKING FOR?

• All our dogs are adopted as family pets and not outside dogs.
• You must be over the age of 21 and own the home you live in.
• We prefer children to be older than 5 years old, however, we do make exceptions
• We prefer folks to have prior experience with owning a dog and understand the personal and financial commitments to owning a dog.

WHAT IS OUR ADOPTION PROCESS?

• We require an application be completed (email us at k9satbc@windstream.net).
• We will check references
• We do a Home Visit prior to the final adoption
• Our adoption fee is $175

Who We Are

Big Canoe Animal Rescue is a small no kill shelter in the north Georgia mountains located half way between Jasper and Dawsonville.  Though a small shelter of 8 dog runs, we care for and place approximately 100 dogs a year to loving homes. 

Built as a facility to handle the packs of dogs that ran through the area nearly 20 years ago, our role has expanded.  We have an outreach program to help those who can't afford to spay and neuter their pets.  Another one of our outreach programs assists our neighbors who may not be able to afford dog food.  We are networking with other local shelters.  We have also started an education program for school children in Dawson and Pickens County, teaching children responsible pet ownership and the importance of neutering and/or spaying your pet.

DIRECTIONS VIA GA 400

Take GA 400 North approximately 31 miles from I-285 to Hwy. 369.  Turn left and travel 12 miles to Yellow Creek Road.  Turn right and follow 10 miles to the end.  Turn right again and go 1/4 mile to Steve Tate Hwy.  Turn left and continue 3 1/2 miles to the Big Canoe North Gate.  The shelter is on the left just after you pass through security.  At the very first stop sign, turn left. 

DIRECTIONS VIA GA 400

Travel 31 miles on I-575 to Hwy 1-9, and turn right.  Hwy 108 becomes Hwy 53.  Follow Hwy 53 straight ahead to Steve Tate Hwy.  Follow above directions to the shelter.
