Who We Are
Big Canoe Animal Rescue is a small no kill shelter in the north Georgia mountains located half way between Jasper and Dawsonville. Though a small shelter of 8 dog runs, we care for and place approximately 100 dogs a year to loving homes.. Built as a facility to handle the packs of dogs that ran through the area nearly 17 years ago, our role has expanded. We have an outreach program to help those who can't afford to spay & neuter their pets. It has made a huge difference in our little corner of the world.
We are very strict about who adopts our dogs. We prefer a fenced in yard, and home ownership, but this is on a case by case situation. All candidates considering adoption must be 21 or older. An application is available through our email. It is important that the new owner gives the dog daily exercise. At the kennel they are walked three times a day. We do not want them left alone all day in a crate as they were socialized daily at our kennel by many volunteers. Our experience has been that most of our dogs do not do well in an apartment situation, or with children under the age of 5.
Big Canoe Animal Rescue will do a home visit prior to the final adoption to make sure this is a great fit for both dog and the person doing the adopting.
Our Intake Policy
Although rare, we sometimes have pet owners come to us looking for their pet after we have found an adoptive home for the pet or processed it for adoption (spay/neuter). To clarify the rights of the pet owner and BCAR, the following policy is in effect.
1. All animals will be scanned for imbedded chips. If a chip is found, or if the animal has any identifiable tag, we will make every possible effort to locate the rightful owner.
2. Under Georgia law, any animal remaining on Big Canoe property three days or longer may be considered to be abandoned, and we are free to take any action we consider to be in the best interest of the animal. End of story.
3. In any other case, we will wait for three days for any rightful owner to come forward to claim any pet we are holding. After three days, the animal will receive a thorough medical examination and will start medication or surgical procedures required. Spaying or neutering will also be performed at this time. The exception to this phase of the policy will be in the case of the animal needing immediate medical attention.
4. If an owner appears after the three-day waiting period but before adoption, the owner will be responsible for vetrinarian costs incurred plus a $10/per night boarding fee.
5. After seven days the animal will be put up for adoption, and all adoptions are final.
