Final Refuge – Assisted Living/Hospice Homes For Dogs

Thanks for your interest in our assisted living/hospice homes for dogs! Providing a wonderful home for a dog that would not otherwise have one may start out as an act of kindness, but we believe you will soon feel that the rewards you receive in love and satisfaction have more than repaid you. Most of the dogs in our program are senior dogs, but occasionally we do get dogs in that are injured or handicapped in some way.

We are in need of doggie assisted living/hospice homes for these dogs. The senior dogs who need our help are looking for families who are willing to take one of the oldest dogs that may not be adoptable because of their age or health. Whether for a few weeks, months, a year or more. We provide support and help with end-of-life decisions but you are committing to be with him to the end.

Foster and Final Refuge care: how are they different?

Foster families provide much-needed loving care to adoptable dogs of all ages rescued from animal shelters and from owners who can no longer care for them. Very often these dogs come to us in poor condition and very anxious from their abandonment. Part of the foster family’s job is to help bring the dog back to good health and let him feel comfortable, thus ready to go on to a permanent home. Foster families generally care for the dog for 2 to 12 weeks until he is adopted.

Final Refuge care is for dogs who are too old or fragile for normal adoption and need a safe loving home in the last months or years of their lives. This home will provide a loving final refuge and keep the dogs comfortable and safe so they do not have to spend their last days afraid in a shelter or alone in a backyard. If you can see them through to the end you will find that the rewards far outweigh the pain of losing a friend.

It is important to keep in mind that the senior dogs who are in need of a new home may have medical issues that are unknown when they are placed in assisted living and hospice homes. While it is always sad to lose one of our dogs, our mission is to give an old dog the loving home that they so deserve for their final days and you will find it greatly rewarding.

As I work at the animal shelter, I see senior and handicapped dogs come in almost daily. I will usually have approximately 72 hours to find placement for these dogs. If you would like to be placed on our waiting list and/or know of others who may also like to help out, please email me at fourpawzplus@aol.com as soon as possible.

If you cannot physically provide a home for one of these precious dogs, you can be a virtual adopter by helping to provide veterinary care. Please contact me at fourpawzplus@aol.com to become a Virtual Adopter.

When taking in a senior dog, you are essentially adopting the dog into your home. However, there is no adoption fee required. You provide the loving home, care, food and transportation, veterinary costs, etc. We are a non-profit rescue, and will provide whatever help, moral support and advice that we can.

We are a 501(c)3 non profit rescue group. We're a very small group of people, with lifelong experience as animal lovers and caregivers. All our animals stay in foster homes so we can better determine their temperament as well as work on their social skills. Our adoptable animals are all spayed / neutered, current on all shots and vaccines, vetted to the best of our ability, including dental as needed, and they're all anxious to find the right forever home.

Remember, owning a pet and providing proper medical care involves ongoing expenses such as heartworm preventative, shots, and other regular items. Also, there may well be unexpected conditions that could require extensive and expensive veterinary care. You should be able to make that committment for the life of the dog if you plan on adopting.

Please read each profile entirely as some of the animals are listed here to help other groups or their owners find permanent homes for these animals. You will need to contact the person listed in the animals profile to get more information or to adopt them. Thanks!

Our sister rescue group is 4 Pawz Plus Critters - they handle the exotics while ARF handles the dogs and cats. Any donations can be sent to:
