Featured Pet:
Gramby

18 months, 55 pounds. What a wiggler! Our ants-in-the-pants pal Gramby is always on the lookout for something interesting. Who can blame him? There's a lot going on around here! He has been in the shelter for over one year. He is patiently and eagerly looking for his forever home

Found as a stray from a city with a breed ban, he's just a youngster, ready to learn anything you can throw his way. Group training classes will set him up for success, and you'd certainly want such a handsome dog to be out in the world, strutting his stuff. Gramby's dedicated friends (Animal Haven volunteers/staff) have taught him a few things, and he'll sit for a treat (though he likes to be sure it's abundantly tasty). He's playful with all, even fond of other animals.

Who We Are...

Our Vision - A lifelong, caring home for every pet

Our Mission To provide a higher quality of life for homeless pets through adoption, education and collaboration with our animal welfare community.

Our Philosophy Founded in 1966 by Nadine Smith, Animal Haven now provides shelter for the stray animals of Merriam, Lenexa, Overland Park, Lake Quivira & the Johnson County Parks Department. Animal Haven accepts pets directly from individuals in need of assistance anytime space is available.

Operating with a progressive low-kill philosophy, Animal Haven is determined to help as many pets as possible find the loving homes they deserve, while working to ensure that animals in our care are both behaviorally and physically healthy. All animals who can be safely handled and who are not suffering from terminal illness remain in our care until a responsible, caring and committed home is made available through adoption.

Adoptive homes are carefully screened to guarantee that pets are welcomed as family companions, and hopefully remain in their new homes for life. We promote our low-kill philosophy in the community by opening our doors frequently to accept animals from other area shelters to save them euthanasia.

In 2005, Animal Haven accepted 2,658 stray, unwanted, orphaned, abandoned and rescued companion animals. Of the many pets received, 282 were humanely put to sleep due to illness or aggression, 652 were happily reunited with their original families, and 1,650 were adopted into great new homes

Adopting a Friend...

All Animal Haven adoptable pets will now be microchipped to provide a permanent form of identification! The adoption fee will include the HomeAgain microchip implantation, activation, and even a one-year membership in the Advanced Recovery Network for no additional charge.

The adoption fee at Animal Haven is $115 for dogs and $75 for cats (two cats may be adopted for $50 each). Our adoption fee includes many valuable services, including spay/neuter, microchip identification, current vaccinations, flea preventative, feline leukemia test (cats), heartworm preventative (dogs), deworming, a bag of Science Diet food (4 lbs. cat food, or 5 lbs. dog food), and special deals on local pet products and services. Adopters also receive a free or discounted post-adoption examination at participating veterinary clinics (adopted pets should see their own veterinarian within the first 7 days in a new home).

Adoption Applications: available at the shelter after you and your entire family (including current dog) have spent some quality time with one of our furry friends.

Out of State Adoptions: Regular adoption protocols still apply. We will not ship pets.

Adoption Considerations...

There are many things to consider before adopting a homeless pet:

    • Do I have enough time to care for a pet?
    • Do I possess the financial resources necessary to provide veterinary care, premium food and supplies to the furry family member?
    • What do I know about this breed?
    • Is this breed too active for me?
    • Will the pet still be welcome when & if when I decide to have children?
    • Do I have the time or patience for a kitten or puppy?
    • Should I adopt an adult pet who already is house & obedience trained?
    • Am I on the fast-track at work and will I have enough time to provide quality care to a dog? Is a cat a better companion for me?
    • Am I looking to adopt simply because my heart goes out to homeless pets? Is this an impulse adoption? Am I doing this for my kids when I KNOW I'll be the primary caregiver?

Please think long and hard before welcoming a pet into your life. The pets at Animal Haven have already been homeless once. ...let's make their next venture into a home their last.
