Who We Are...
Our Vision - A lifelong, caring home for every pet
Our Mission To provide a higher quality of life for homeless pets through adoption, education and collaboration with our animal welfare community.
Our Philosophy Established in 1966, Animal Haven is one of greater Kansas City's largest no-kill animal shelters. We are a non-profit organization operating with a progressive no-kill philosophy. For over 40 years, Animal Haven has served our community as both an adoption center and as an organization that manages stray animals for up to twelve local municipalities. Animal Haven is the only non-profit animal shelter in Johnson County, Kansas that manages stray animals. Animal Haven serves as a home between homes for as long as the animal needs it and never euthanizes for space. Animal haven also works full time to reunite pets with their owners.
In 2009, over 4000 pets came through Animal Haven's doors. We had a record adoption year with over 2500 adoptions!
Adoptive homes are carefully screened to guarantee that pets are welcomed as family companions, and hopefully remain in their new homes for life. We promote our no-kill philosophy in the community by opening our doors frequently to accept animals from other area shelters to save them from euthanasia.
Adopting a Friend...
All Animal Haven adoptable pets are microchipped to provide a permanent form of identification! The adoption fee will include the HomeAgain microchip implantation, activation, and even a one-year membership in the Advanced Recovery Network for no additional charge.
The adoption fee at Animal Haven is $115 for dogs and $75 for cats (two cats may be adopted for $50 each). Our adoption fee includes many valuable services, including spay/neuter, microchip identification, current vaccinations, flea preventative, feline leukemia test (cats), heartworm preventative (dogs), deworming, a bag of Science Diet food (4 lbs. cat food, or 5 lbs. dog food), and special deals on local pet products and services. Adopters also receive a free or discounted post-adoption examination at participating veterinary clinics (adopted pets should see their own veterinarian within the first 7 days in a new home).
Adoption Applications: available at the shelter after you and your entire family (including current dog) have spent some quality time with one of our furry friends.
Out of State Adoptions: Regular adoption protocols still apply. We will not ship pets.
Adoption Considerations...
There are many things to consider before adopting a homeless pet:
- Do I have enough time to care for a pet?
- Do I possess the financial resources necessary to provide veterinary care, premium food and supplies to the furry family member?
- What do I know about this breed?
- Is this breed too active for me?
- Will the pet still be welcome when & if when I decide to have children?
- Do I have the time or patience for a kitten or puppy?
- Should I adopt an adult pet who already is house & obedience trained?
- Am I on the fast-track at work and will I have enough time to provide quality care to a dog? Is a cat a better companion for me?
- Am I looking to adopt simply because my heart goes out to homeless pets? Is this an impulse adoption? Am I doing this for my kids when I KNOW I'll be the primary caregiver?
Please think long and hard before welcoming a pet into your life. The pets at Animal Haven have already been homeless once. ...let's make their next venture into a home their last.
