Our Mission

Almost Home Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is an animal welfare organization established to support animal care and control for local municipalities, as well as promoting the human/companion animal bond. We are dedicated to creating programs and services which will educate the public, with regard to compassion, responsibility and respect toward all animals, through advocacy, spay/neuter and adoption.

Adoption Policy and Procedure

If you are interested in adopting a dog/puppy or cat/kitten, we require that you follow our adoption procedure:

1. Come in and look through our adoptable pets. We have a trained staff, as well as matchmaking volunteers, that will help find the right match for your home.
2. Fill out a pre-adoption application for cats and a pre-adoption survey for dogs. Both of them are basic surveys that will let our trained staff know if your home would be a suitable home for the animal you wish to adopt. The dogs adoption survey varies form the cat application due to the fact that we implement the Meet Your Match^TM Canine-ality Program for the dogs. For more information, click here.
3. If you are adopting a dog and have any children or dogs already, we would ask that they are brought in for a compatibility test.
4. If the pre-adoption application meets all requirements, the new pet will be adopted into your home.

We require that all animals be spayed/neutered before leaving our facility. For more information on spaying/neutering, please visit the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) website. There will be an adoption fee for each animal being adopted from our shelter. If interested in one of the pets on our website, please stop in and fill out an adoption application. Or print of the application, fill it out at home, and then drop it off to us.

Dogs $150.

Puppies $175

Cats $95

Prices include spay/neuter, vaccines (including distemper and rabies), heartworm test for dogs, Felv/Fiv tests for cats, and the overall care given to the animal while in our residence.

We also promote free adoption counseling and on sight K9 behavior counseling by our own Dog Behavoralist.

From Camden-Philadelphia area via the Betsy Ross Bridge:

• Take I-95 to the Betsy Ross Bridge
• Betsy Ross Bridge becomes NJ-90 E.
• Merge onto N. Crescent Blvd / US-130 N toward Cinnaminson/ Trenton
• Turn Right onto Commerce Highway, a small road near a Men's clothing factory outlet. Look For This Sign! (click link!)
• Turn left onto Pennsauken Highway and we are a little ways down the right hand side. Look for this sign on our building:

From Philadelphia area via the Tacony Palmyra Bridge:

• Cross over the bridge and take first exit sign that says "To 644 Haddonfield"
• Go to traffic light (Old Haddonfield Rd.) Turn right at the light.
• Make first left onto Pennsauken Highway. There will be a on the corner
• We are the second building on the left, right after Certi-Fit Auto Parts.

From all points south:

• Take I-295 N
• Merge onto I-76 W.
• Merge onto US-130 N via exit 1D toward Collingswood
• Enter next roundabout and take 1st exit onto W. Crescent Blvd / US-130 N.
• Turn slight right onto S. Crescent Blvd / US-130 N.
• Turn Right onto Commerce Highway, a small road near a Men's clothing factory outlet LOOK FOR THIS SIGN!!!!! (click link!)
• Turn left onto Pennsauken Highway and we are a little ways down the right hand side.

From Marlton, Moorestown, and Maple Shade areas:

• From Rt. 73N, take Rt. 130 S (exit Pennsauken/Camden)
• As soon as you get on to Rt. 130 S, move to the right lane and take first exit, that says S 73 to 644 Haddonfield.
• Take first exit sign that says "To 644 Haddonfield"
• Go to traffic light (Old Haddonfield Rd.) Turn right at the light.

Fundraisers & Upcoming Events

We Sell Nutro Dog/Cat & Puppy/Kitten food at the Almost Home Animal Shelter. Prices range from $20 to $30 per bag at a price that is less than you would pay at a pet store. For more information, call the shelter at 856-663-3058.

For more information on our current fundraisers, click here. We currently have a long term, ongoing project for Recycling Cartridges. We are requesting everyone to save their empty printer (inkjet/laser), fax and multi-function cartridges (all-in-one printers), as well as laser printer fuser cores. They take all brands such as Apple, Brother, Cannon, HP, Lexmark, Pitney Bowes, Panasonic, Samsung and Dell. Our shelter will have a box set up in our lobby area where people can drop them off to us. For for cartridge donated to our shelter, we can recycle them and receive a monetary donation in return from the recycling company. So please drop off your cartridges soon. Volunteers

Interested in volunteering at our shelter? Here are a few ways you can help.

1. Dog Walkers and Cat Cuddlers: Being in an animal shelter can sometimes cause animals to become depressed and stressed. We need dedicated volunteers who are willing to come in and socialize with our orphans to help keep their spirits up. Walking dogs and cuddling cats allows these animals to stretch their legs and exercise while coming in contacting with human love and attention. Also, when time is spent with these orphans, the volunteers quickly learn the dog or cat's personality and special characteristics that could increase its chances at adoption.
2. Cleaners: We are in need of dedicated volunteers who are willing to come into the shelter to help our staff clean the dog kennels and cat cages in the morning. If you are not interested in cleaning cages, then we also need volunteers to help do laundry and dishes. This may not be the most fun volunteer job, but doing cleaning is one of the best ways that a volunteer can help our orphans.
3. Fundraising: Our shelter always accepts fundraising projects. One of the most common fundraising projects is doing a donation drive where you collect items from our wish list (see above). If you are interested in doing a donation drive, e-mail us at almosthomeshelter@comcast.net and let us know so we can give you an updated list that states which items we are in desperate need of at that time. If you work somewhere that will allow us to hold a fundraising event (i.e. a bowling alley, a pizzeria/restaurant, etc) please let us know!
4. Foster Care: We are looking for responsible, animal loving people who are willing to open up their hearts and homes to special needs orphans at our shelter. Animals that need to be in foster care may include sick cats/dogs, moms with litters of kittens/ puppies, orphan puppies/kittens that need to be bottle-fed, dogs/cats recovering from surgery, and/or animals that need further socialization. The amount of time that an animal spends in foster care will depend on the reason why the animal is in foster care to begin with. Foster parents must fill out a foster contract and will need to be approved by our kennel manager.
5. Matchmaking: Matchmakers are oftentimes vital in finding an animal the right home. A matchmaker is responsible for helping customers and potential adopters find the best match for their family and lifestyle. (For example, a very high sprung dog may not be the best match for an elderly couple.) A matchmaker would do counseling with these potential adopters so that they are fully prepared to adopt an animal. Some of the responsibilities of matchmakers include knowing the animal's personality, having good people and communication skills, and knowing the shelter's adoption policies and procedures. Training to new matchmakers will be done by a staff member or senior volunteer.
6. Pet Detectives: A pet detectives is in charge of going through our adoptable kennel and cattery with the lost animals books and will try to match animals with their potential owners so that they may be reunited. If an animal matches a description in our lost animal book, the potential owner is then contacted so that they can come in and see if it is really their animal. A pet detective should have an eye for detail and should also have good people and communication skills.
7. Transporters: We are in need of people who are willing to transport dogs and cats to the vet's office or to special events via their own vehicles. Another time that a transport may be needed is if an animal is being transferred to another shelter/rescue group.
8. Follow Up'ers: 'Follow-Up'ers' are in charge of making phone calls after an animal has been adopted to make sure the animal is doing well in its new home. If there are any adjustment issues, the follow-up'er should be able to give useful advice to new adopter to help the animals settle into their new home easier.

Lost Pets

Have you lost your pet? Here are a few steps you can try in order to locate your lost loved one.

1. Contact your local animal shelters. Visit the shelter to see if your pet is there. If your pet is not at the shelter at the time that you visit, leave a lost report as well as a detailed picture. That way, if your pet does come in, the shelter staff can check their lost report book and contact you. Be sure to visit the shelter every few days, or call daily to see if any new animals have come in.

2. Make up posters and signs that include a detailed description of your pet, a good picture (if possible), the last day seen/where seen, and your contact information. Hang these posters up at the local shelters and vet offices, as well as around your neighborhood.

3. Contact your non-emergency police department and leave a description of your lost pet in case the animal is brought to them. Also contact any veterinarian offices in your area for the same reason.

There are three animal shelters in Camden County that accept stray and lost animals. Try contacting all there when searching your pet.
