Our Featured Pet...

Our featured pets are primarily Rez Dogs! What are rez dogs?
Rez dogs are unique and smart. According to a Browning, Montana survey, rez dogs have a very high intelligence. They are the adaptable nomads of most Indian reservations in the United States. They are survivors. These dogs are so unique that they know when to cross at cross walks by watching cars stopping and going. You can feed Rez Dogs just about anything. They will eat all your food scraps, including pinto beans to vegetables to rabbits to chicken bones. They know the difference between dog catchers and friendly human beings. In fact, rez dogs are extremely adaptable to severe weather extremes. Rez dogs know where to find shelter and they are also cunning as far as knowing where their next meal will be. Studies show that when rez dogs run in packs, they have a monarchy system, such as their relatives, the wolves. The pecking order goes from high to low, when accepting a new rez dog into the pack. They have to bond and prove themselves to be worthy to the pack. Because most rez dogs are mixed breeds, they do not have the same kind of genetic deficiencies as pure-bred dogs, and are basically indestructible as long as they stay away from cars and trucks. So, be a proud owner of a nearly indestructible, intelligent, unique Rez Dog. They are extremely loyal and make great companions and guard dogs.

Who We Are

Wind River Furry Friends No-Kill Animal Shelter is a non-profit organization that was established in January 2006, located in Fort Washakie, on the Wind River Indian Reservation in west-central Wyoming, home of the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Tribes. There are many stray, unwanted and abused animals on the Wind River Reservation. Fremont County animal control does not have jurisdiction on the Reservation; therefore, we work closely with Eastern Shoshone Housing Authority, since they lost their funding and no longer can house any unwanted animals. Furry Friends is staffed by volunteer efforts and we are relying on donations and contributions to support our start-up shelter on the Rez. We have created a tribal youth group that we hope to train and then they can go into the schools to talk about animal care and pet spay and neutering. We also advocate for people to go to local shelters and adopt unwanted pets instead of buying pets through expensive pet stores. We have created an alliance with the following organizations, and we would like to thank them for their generous assistance: The Pet Connection in Lander; Hines General Store in Ft. Washakie; Lander Mills who has donated animal food; and Lander Animal Hospital, who provide spay/neutering and discounted animal health checks.
