Our Featured Pet...

KJ is our featured pet. He is an older, laid back Australian Cattle Dog who came to our shelter in bad shape. He has a lovely temperament and enjoys people very much. He simply was not cared for in his previous home. We have literally brushed out buckets of hair from his coat and will bathe him to clean him up more. He should be in great shape for his new home! KJ is a senior gentleman who desperately needs a new home that will make his golden years truly golden, with high quality food, regular, but gentle exercise, weekly brushing, tons of belly rubs and lots of love! We think this will add years to his life!!

PROJECT LOVED

PROJECT LOVED began in October 2004. The program partners humane society dogs with young offenders in the correctional facility near Newcastle. The dogs live with assigned inmates for four weeks and receive socialization with lots of people and other dogs, as well as training in basic obedience commands. With few exceptions, all the dogs at our facility have gone through the PROJECT LOVED training program and are ready to continue their training in new homes!

Who We Are

Weston County Humane Society (WCHS) is located in Newcastle, Wyoming. WCHS was formed in 1982 by a group of concerned citizens who recognized the need for a facility which would provide for the humane treatment of stray and unwanted pets. As a non-profit organization, WCHS relies on one part-time director and a board of five to eight volunteer board members for day to day operations. It is the only humane society in the northeast corner of Wyoming, serving the needs of Weston County, as well as neighboring communities. Our mission is to continue to provide shelter for lost or unwanted pets, adoption and placement services for these pets, and community education regarding responsible pet ownership, humane animal treatment and care, while stressing the importance of spaying and neutering companion animals to control pet-overpopulation. On October 18, 2004, we began partnering with the Wyoming State Boot Camp for the training of our shelter dogs. The Boot Camp is part of a minimum security prison near Newcastle. Inmates from the Boot Camp and WY Honor Conservation Camp have been coming to the shelter weekly for over two years to help construct the new building, clean kennels, brush and walk the dogs, etc. We now have four dogs at a time living at the boot camp facility for four weeks and receiving training in basic obedience commands, as well as receiving daily grooming and exercise. We believe this basic training makes the dogs more appealing to potential adopters and helps ease the transition for the dog between shelter life and life in a new home. All the dogs in the program are currently available for adoption, but new owners will have to wait until they have completed their tranining before taking them home. Dogs that are currently in the program or recently graduated, are listed on our website, under the title Project L.O.V.E.D. All of the PROJECT LOVED dogs are spayed or neutered and up to date on shots before entering the program. Their adoption fee is $75. Transport to other Wyoming communities or surrounding states can sometimes be arranged. Please keep in mind that an application and home check is required prior to adopting one of these wonderful dogs.

Adopting a friend

If you are interested in meeting and/or adopting one of the animals in our care, please email us at WCHS@vcn.com Within a few days, a representative from WCHS will contact you and send an online application for you to fill out and return, either by email or hard copy. We will review the application and contact you. Home checks are required for out of town adoptions. Transport to certain areas of South Dakota, Colorado, Nebraska and Montana are sometimes available. The adoption fee for one of our animals is $75 and $100 if the dog requires transport to its new home. All animals are neutered or spayed and up to date on all shots before being placed in a home.
