News

"THE JOAN HARTMAN FUND" In September of 2006, we lost one of our dearest members due to illness. Joan Hartman was one of the pioneers in our area for sheltering/fostering stray and unwanted animals. Joan had a true passion for assisting those who were unable to help themselves. Her love for animals was known throughout the area. She and Eugene received many calls, most of which resulted in them going and rescuing some poor cat or dog that otherwise faced a very bleak end. When asked why she couldn't turn down a stray, Joanie replied, "I just can't get past their eyes." The animals spoke to Joan with their eyes and she understood. Truely a remarkable Lady. She is sadly missed by Eugene and all of her friends, including the four legged ones. In memory of Joan and the work she wanted to see continued in Mineral County, a fund has been established at the 1st United Bank. The MCHS - Joan Hartman Fund. The ultimate goal is to fulfill Joanie's dream of a shelter here in Mineral County. If funds do not allow that large a project, the funds will be used to provide proper vetting to prepare rescued cats and dogs for adoption to good homes. Donations can be made directly to the First United Bank & Trust, Keyser Square Mall, Keyser, WV 26726 (specifically state for the Joan Hartman Fund) or mail to Cathy Nestor at RR1 Box 196A, Keyser, WV 26726 or Eugene Hanlin at Rt 5 Box 740, Keyser, WV 26726. A PayPal button has been added to our Petfinder Website for anyone wishing to donate in that manner. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For those folks who have an outside pooch, please remember as warm/hot weather has arrived, that your canine friend needs to have a well constructed dog house, and that they need fresh water and food EVERY DAY! They can't acquire these essentials by themselves; they have to rely on your kindness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are looking for individuals who would like to make a difference in the life of a misfortunate pet. We are in the process of finding foster homes to provide tempory care for some of our shelter dogs and cats. This involves giving them the individual care and attention that they need to help them prepare for moving on to their forever home. If interested please contact us at: gregncathy@hotmail.com

Who We Are

The Mineral County Humane Society is a small group of local animal lovers working to assist our 4 legged friends who cannot help themselves. Some of our projects have included donating materials to have dog houses built and distributed to those in need. Offering to assist with funding for having pets spay/neutered. Working with shelters to help find permanent homes for unwanted pets, as well as a list of other activities. These things are all made possible by those donating time to the projects as well as the generous monetary donations of members and individuals in the community. We meet every 3rd Tuesday at the Moose Lodge in Keyser WV at 7:00 PM. We welcome you to join us as visitors to see what we are all about and encourage you to join us as members to help those in need. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thought of the month: We call animals “dumb,” but in many ways, they’re smarter than humans-not because they have more intelligence, but because they access it more freely. Their instinctual knowing hasn’t been overridden with social programming that distracts them from their true nature. Animals accept themselves and their purpose as they are, and in such innocence, they’re precisely guided. Alan Cohen
