WHO IS HCPAP?
Hampshire County Pet Adoption Program is a non-profit rescue run by a group of dedicated volunteers. HCPAP is not a shelter but a foster organization. Founded on October 1, 1999, we have specialized in dog rescue, however, we rescue cats sometimes, too. Our purpose is to rescue pets in need. We then provide them with veterinary care, socialization, training and love. It is our goal to find a home for every pet that comes our way.
WHERE DO OUR ANIMALS COME FROM?
All of our animals are strays or have been released to us by their owners. We also help out local shelters whenever possible. Unfortunately, background history is usually not available.
DO WE EUTHANIZE?
We are fortunate enough to not have to euthanize our animals. We keep them until they find their perfect home. However, because our animals are in foster homes, this does greatly limit the number of animals we are able to rescue.
WHY DO WE FOSTER?
Fostering gives us the unique ability to match each animal with an appropriate owner. We are able to discover the personality of each individual animal and the type of environment they will flourish in. It allows us to determine how the animals will behave around dogs, cats, children, etc. It also allows us to discover any not so great behaviors. When animals are fostered they are socialized and learn the "DOs and DON'Ts" of living in a home. Overall, pets that are fostered are better prepared for adoption.
Aftercare support is also available to help address anything that may arise after the animal is placed in a new home. We are very happy to work with you about any problems that may arise. Remember, almost all behavior is correctable using patience, love and positive reinforcement. We always like hearing from you even if there are not problems. We get very close to all the animals we foster so it is always good to hear how they are doing.
Because we do not have a shelter our animals get their chance to be adopted on Saturdays at PetSmart in Winchester, VA from 11am - 4pm. Not all of them can come to Petsmart at once so it is very important that you contact us if there were any that you were mainly interested in. Adoptions are not done during the week, only Saturdays at PetSmart. Because all of our animals are in foster homes, Saturdays are the only times they can be seen, as well.
Lost pets not wearing some form of ID do not usually get returned to their homes. PLEASE have some sort of identification on your pets at all times.
INTERESTED IN FOSTERING?
