We really have to brag about the terrific selection of pets we have for adoption.
All the cats are just fantastic felines -- playful, loving, and beautiful. We
also have a great selection of adult dogs with wonderful personalities and puppies
that are as cute as can be. A shelter is the BEST place to find a new family
member! Click

Rescue
Rescues, we are very rescue-friendly. We have regular transports to the northeast
and can do full vetting. We LOVE rescues!
Volunteer
Volunteers are desperately needed for both morning and evening shifts any day
of the week. Training is available and you can work with a paid employee or experienced
volunteer. Shelter work includes dog walking, pet grooming, socialization and
play, kennel cleaning, general cleaning, yard work, and many other small and large
jobs. For those who prefer to work in a non-shelter capacity, people are needed
to help with transporting, fundraising, grant writing, mailings, and in other capacities. Please
call the shelter for more information: 304-496-8855

Fundraisers ~ Please help us raise money!
The Society is always looking for new ideas to raise funds. Please call or email and let us know about your ideas.
Thank you to all those who were part of the county-wide rabies clinic team on October 4th: Wanda Billmeyer, Jim and Jan Dodgins, Eileen Eddis, Becky Fuller, Eph and Karen Herriott, Hilary Hott, Lowell Hott, Jane McBride, Kathy Newlin, Joan Nicholas, and Marty and Joe Rhodes, and Heather Spitzer. Thanks also to Jan Martin for helping with logistics and publicity before the event. Over 750 animals were vaccinated. This is a tremendous service to the community as many of these animals would not receive rabies protection if it were not for the efforts of all involved those mentioned.
Fundraising: T-Shirts
Colorful and meaningful T-shirts (with humane slogans) are available for $10.00. Please support this fundraiser by purchasing one for yourself and one for a friend. Available for sale at Augusta Animal Hospital or at the shelter. Many new designs are available in adult and children sizes.
Food Lion Fundraiser
Here's a great way to help with fundraising without any effort! Register your
Food Lion MVP card with the Humane Society and a percentage of your purchases
will be donated to the society on a quarterly basis. Whenever your card is swiped,
the society will be credited. To register your card, go online to the Food Lion
website, or call Augusta Animal Hospital and Katie will register for you!
MANY THANKS!!!
Thanks once again to Moose Lodge 1371 in Romney for their generous fundraiser.
Many thanks to Homeward Trails and A Forever Home Rescue for their tremendous assistance in placing many of our pets. We don't know what we would do without you!
SPAY/NEUTER ASSISTANCE
Spay/neuter assistance is available to those with limited financial resources who live in hampshire county. Applications are available at both public libraries, Health and Human Services, and the shelter. Please don't let finances be a deterrent to having your pet neutered!
SURRENDERING PETS...
Persons wishing to surrender pets are asked to call ahead and are also encouraged to leave a $25 donation. If you are a resident from another county we encourage you to leave a $35 donation. This money helps defray the costs of supplies, payroll, utilities, equipment, and cremation. We can only continue to serve the community if donations are received.
WHO WE ARE
The Humane Society of Hampshire County is a non-profit organization whose mission is to relieve and prevent animal suffering and abuse by
1. Providing a humane, temporary shelter for stray and
unwanted companion animals.
2. Carrying forward a continuous program of fundamental,
widespread humane education promoting responsible pet
ownership.
3. Reducing the overbreeding of dogs and cats through
public education and sterilization programs.
4. Working to create a community with humane and caring
attitudes towards both domestic animals and wildlife.
The Humane Society of Hampshire County is the only shelter in the community which accepts both stray and unwanted cats and dogs. We receive no government funding and rely entirely on memberships, donations, fund raising, and grant monies. Donations may be made as memorials (pet or human), or can be earmarked for spay/neuter projects, general operations, or staff training.
Public hours are by appointment. This is to allow our small staff and volunteers to work efficiently which better serves both our pets and prospective adopters. Please leave a message on our answering machine and it will be returned promptly.
ADOPTING A FRIEND
Our goal is to place pets in permanent, loving homes where they will be well cared for. Persons wishing to adopt pets may fill out an application after selecting a pet in person. If a pet is seen online please contact us for an appointment to visit the pet. Applications are reviewed and decisions are made within 2-3 days. This gives the shelter staff time to check references and also gives the potential adopter time to consider the idea of having a new family member. All pets are neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before leaving the shelter. Most are leash-trained and some are house-trained.
Adoption Costs:
Cat -- $65
Dog -- $75
