Our goal is to make Pocahontas County a no kill community and are working toward getting a shelter/building so the animals here can be housed indoors.

A very generous, former Pocahontas County resident and homeless animal advocate, has donated a 16'x20' building, similar to the one pictured here, to the homeless animals in Pocahontas county. Donated in memory of her two precious companion pooches, MacKenzie and Buffy. We can not ever thank her enough for all she has done to help the homeless, neglected and abused animals here.

We are still trying to get the groundwork finished. The weather has not cooperated with us and it is taking longer than we anticipated. We have started though and that is the good part!

Here is what we need donations for to help the animals get in out of the cold and into a heated facility and an air conditioned one during the summer and completely out of the elements!

Funding for dozer work~Donated!

Gravel for under the building~Donated!

Crates of all sizes (Especially Lg and Ex large)~Some have been donated, but we can still use more!

Electrical and plumbing supplies

Utility sink

DONATED!! THANK YOU!! Bath tub for animals so they can get baths and be indoors!

DONATED!! THANK YOU!! Dog dryer

Funding for additional supplies that we have not thought of yet!

If you can assist in any way or would like to donate towards the funding, please contact us to see how! Thank you!

WE HAVE TRANSPORT ASSISTANCE TO THE NORTHEAST!

Some of our cats have been completely vetted and are in great need of forever homes or rescues. Some have been here since they were babies and it is not fair to them to not be able to have a forever home. Please help our precious kitties! Please find it in your heart and home to adopt or rescue at least one of our cats or kittens. We also could really use sponsors for some of the animals here. Sponsorship will only be allowed on certain dogs and ALL cats. There is very little room here and the ACO can not keep the dogs forever at her home, which is why sponsorship will vary for the dogs. If you can help sponsor, please email us to find out if the dog you are interested in helping is available to be sponsored. We are not trying to be cruel at all, but with such space limitations and no shelter, some must be euthanized. We make a great effort to try to find all dogs homes or rescues. It just doesn't work out how we want it to sometimes. Please, spay and neuter ALL PETS.

The deaths of several millions a year just isn't worth your few extra bucks in the pocket.

Chained dogs don't make good guard dogs. Chaining teaches dogs to be aggressive rather than protective. Plus--all a chained dog can do is bark! A chained dog is likely to attack anyone--the mailman, neighborhood children, other pets. Bailey was rescued from a backyard in Florida, where he had been chained in the 90 degree heat. Bailey's owners admitted that they had not fed him in 30 days! Save-A-Pet in New York rescued Bailey, shipped him to NY, and are currently getting him healthy again. Visit www.baileyrescue.com for more info or to donate. Rescuers provided the doghouse, food bowl and water bucket for this little girl. She lived on a chain for 13 years. It is unimaginable living in one spot for that long and never seeing anything past the end of a chain for your entire life. Bear was imprisoned by a 5-pound chain, which was cutting into his neck. Bear was rescued by www.washingtonpashelter.org Read this story to see a picture of how Bear looks now! He is pictured with one of his rescuers, Tina Ealy. One problem with chaining is that dogs will sometimes jump the fence or off a deck, hanging themselves. What a terrible way to die.

HOT WEATHER TIPS

In summertime, the living isn’t always easy for our animal friends. Dogs and cats can suffer from the same problems that humans do, such as overheating, dehydration and even sunburn. By taking some simple precautions, you can celebrate the season and keep your pets happy and healthy...

1. A visit to the veterinarian for a spring or early summer check-up is a must; add to that a test for heartworm, if your dog isn't on year-round preventive medication. Do parasites bug your animal companions? Ask your doctor to recommend a safe, effective flea and tick control program.

2. Never leave your pet alone in a vehicle—hyperthermia can be fatal. Even with the windows open, a parked automobile can quickly become a furnace in no time. Parking in the shade offers little protection, as the sun shifts during the day.

3. Always carry a gallon thermos filled with cold, fresh water when traveling with your pet..

4. The right time for playtime is in the cool of the early morning or evening, but never after a meal or when the weather is humid.

5. Street smarts: When the temperature is very high, don’t let your dog standing on hot asphalt. His or her body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum. .

6. A day at the beach is a no-no, unless you can guarantee a shaded spot and plenty of fresh water for your companion. Salty dogs should be rinsed off after a dip in the ocean. .

7. Provide fresh water and plenty of shade for animals kept outdoors; a properly constructed doghouse serves best. Bring your dog or cat inside during the heat of the day to rest in a cool part of the house..

8. Be especiallyl sensitive to older and overweight animals in hot weather. Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dogs such as bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers, Lhasa apsos, boxers and shih tzus, as well as those with heart or lung diseases should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.

9. When walking your dog, steer clear of areas that you suspect have been sprayed with insecticides or other chemicals. And please be alert for coolant or other automotive fluid leaking from your vehicle. Animals are attracted to the sweet taste, and ingesting just a small amount can be fatal. Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 if you suspect that your animal has been poisoned.

10. Good grooming can stave off summer skin problems, especially for dogs with heavy coats. Shaving the hair to a one-inch length-never down to the skin, please, which robs Rover of protection from the sun-helps prevent overheating. Cats should be brushed often.

11. Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.

12. Having a backyard barbecue? Always keep matches, lighter fluid, citronella candles and insect coils out of pets' reach.

13. Stay alert for signs of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting and drooling and mild weakness, along with an elevated body temperature.

We are strong advocates for spaying and neutering of ALL PETS! DO NOT buy while shelter pets die!

Who We Are

Photobucket

I am the Animal Control and Humane Officer for Pocahontas County, WV. I take in unwanted, abused and neglected dogs and cats, and the many strays in the county. We have NO shelter and all are boarded outdoors in kennels at my home. Right now, the weather and temperatures are brutal here and I would love to be able to find the dogs and cats here forever homes or reputable rescues!

We could really use your support by offering temporary foster homes, transport assistance, walking the dogs and playing with them when you are available, help taking pictures of the animals, and also sponsoring the animals so that they may get the medical attention and vetting needed! If you can offer help even one day a week that would be wonderful!

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE DOG FOOD, CAT FOOD, LITTER, ETC., PLEASE TAKE IT TO THE MARLINTON COMMUNITY THRIFT STORE AND DROP IT OFF. Melissa and Scott Gibb were very gracious to extend the offer to us, so please take advantage of it and donate a bag or two! Thanks Melissa and Scott! We appreciate your help!

We are in great need of volunteers to come to Durbin and help walk, socialize the dogs/puppies, teach basic commands, and to help with overall care of the animals taken in here. If you would like to help, even one day a week or for a few hours, it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact us to find out how. Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and 4H'ers are also welcome to participate. Please have your club leader contact Sandy Mallow for more information.

WE ARE ALSO IN GREAT NEED OF FOSTER HOMES! IF YOU CAN HELP FOSTER TEMPORARILY ANY OF OUR PETS, PLEASE CONTACT US IMMEDIATELY. SOME ARE AWAITING TRANSPORTS TO RESCUES. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! .

VOLUNTEER PHOTOGRAPHERS NEEDED! If you can help photograph any of the animals to be placed on the pet finder site that would be wonderful! We can also use help just to hold them long enough to get great pictures of them. It is hard to make a dog stand still and take the picture all by yourself! If you can help, please contact us! Thank you!

Attention rescues and adopters

We appreciate ALL of your help here for the animals at Durbin, WV. We do have a pay pal account and you may use that for your fees. However, when paying for vetting fees, it would be best, if at all possible, if you could either call the vet directly and pay or can mail in a money order. Most of you know that Pay Pal is a great way to pay for things, but a percentage is taken out of the monies sent for the site, which in turn leaves Sandy paying out of pocket costs for the animals. If you are in need of any veterinary costs please ask us which way we would prefer for that specific animal and we will let you know. If you must pay by pay pal, that is also fine. Please remember, whether paying via pay pal or directly to the vet, to indicate which animal you are paying for. We must also start asking for a donation towards gas costs for the animals taken. The reason for this is because, the vet is an hour away~46 miles one way~ and transport meeting places are generally 2-3 hours one way for her and all gas is coming out of pocket as well. In order for her to keep this up, she must start getting help with traveling costs, because a lot of times, she has to go back to the vet the next day for pick up after speuters. Please keep this in mind when paying for an animal from this shelter. Thank you! If you have any questions regarding this, please feel free to contact us.

Adopting a friend

To adopt a companion animal from us you must fill out an application, have great vet references, comply to a home visit, and most of all be a friend to your new companion!

Please remember, when adopting a shelter companion, that it sometimes can take days to a few weeks for one to completely adjust to his/her new living environment. They do not always come to you fully ready for their new life. Many have been abused, neglected and are scared. They have placed into a situation that they did not ask for, but once they realize everything will be ok, they usually adjust quickly. Please give them time to adjust to their new surroundings before you give up on them like the previous owners did! Help quide them slowly to accept their new home by showing them a lot of attention and some serious love!
