CAT HOARDER NEWS!

Thursday June 7th 2007 around 10:30am Promise Animal League was called with the news that the Sheriffs Dept in Martinsburg, WV was finally able to get a search and seizure warrant to go into the home of Anthony Patrick Sine who was suspected of hoarding at least 30 cats in horrible conditions. We had been alerted that Animal Control was working on this case a week prior. With this call our group had about a 1 hour notice to get ready to assist with the removal of at least 30+ known cats from the residence and prepare for their needs once they were in Berkeley Co Animal Control’s custody.

When we arrived on the scene along with Melissa Susko of Pigs Animal Sanctuary who was also assisting, we expected to find at least double the amount of cats that the owner had stated that he owned. As we opened the door of the residence we weren’t prepared for the foul odor that hit us as the friendly cats tried to get out the door into the fresh air. The house was in such horrible conditions, dark inside with no air circulating and 5 years of feces, urine and garbage littering every surface in the house. The smell was so overwhelming that the Animal Control officers who only handle dog cases in the county had to call in the fire department for air masks and tanks as they couldn’t get past the front door because of the foul smell of feces and ammonia from the cat urine. All of the viewable surfaces in the home were blackened from years of cat paws covered in feces walking on them. The flies swarmed our heads like we were outside walking through a swarm of gnats on a hot summer day. Our worst fears unfolded as the cats appeared to have upper respiratory symptoms, runny eyes, ear mites, wounds, pregnant and some nursing babies and all were hungry and dehydrated as the only access to water was from a dripping filthy bath tub facet. We moved the urine saturated sofa and recliners and found two little live gray babies that were only hours old and others unfortunate ones that had died.

We rescued 29 unaltered male cats and 18 unaltered female cats from horrible unimaginable conditions that day. The next day we went back into the home to recover three more male cats that were hiding from the commotions of the day before. The total of 50 cats that now need care and new homes! Hopefully with the laws this man now charged with 49 counts of animal cruelty will never be allowed to own an animal again

Our group now faces the huge undertaking that all cats must be spayed, neutered, tested, vaccinated, flea and parasite treated and we need your help! The cost of their care is in the thousands of dollars already. All of the soon to be mama’s, babies and ones that needed the most medical care are currently in foster homes, they all deserve a chance. If you have a love for animals, please assist Promise Animal League, Inc in assisting with the care of these cats. Any donation no matter how small will make a difference in these cat’s lives today! You can donate a bag of cat/kitten food, cat litter; we need towels, cat beds, cat carriers, toys etc. As Promise Animal League is an all volunteer organization, all donations go directly to the care of the cats and your donations are tax deductible! This is our busiest time of year with it being kitten season that our meager funds are already stretched thin and we need your support to assist these cats!

Thank you in advance for any support that you can give these cats in need.

Sincerely,

Star Silva
Director

Update on the Hoarder Case!

The majority of the cats from the hoarder case were moved into a brand new building in August 2007 with an attached newly built outdoor enclosure. They have all been spayed, neutered, vaccinated, parasite and flea treated. Some of the cats from the hoarder case have been adopted into wonderful homes and the others that have chronic medical issues will live out their lives being taken care of the way they really deserved to be with fresh litter boxes, food and water daily. They have shelving and cat trees to climb. Their building is heated in the cold winter months and air conditioned during the hot summer. You can view pictures of their new home under the adoptable animals on this site. Thanks to all of the people and organizations that made a difference in these cats lives!

Who We Are

Promise Animal League, Inc was formed for the prevention of cruelty to animals and educational purposes by a group of individuals who have been helping animals in the local community for over 25 years. Located in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia we assist Animal Control in our area with cats and kittens that are then placed into foster homes and adopted from the PetsMart in Hagerstown, Maryland. Our group of dedicated volunteers provides a pet food bank for other shelter/rescue groups in the 4 state areas. We work with local veterinarian practices to hold cat spay/neuter clinics for the low income public. We also assist the public with trap, neuter and release of feral cats.

Adopting a lifelong companion

Promise Animal League, Inc requires an adoption application. A home visit may be required depending on the situation of the animal to be adopted. The adoption fee to adopt a cat or kitten is $75 and includes the spay or neuter, test for FeLv/FIV, rabies and distemper vaccinations according to their age, flea and earmite treatments if necessary, dewormed and micro-chipping.

Please understand that we do not do same day adoptions and it may take up to 2 weeks to process your application. This process helps us ensure that we adopt the animals into the appropriate home for that pet because this is for the rest of their lives which could be up to 20 years in some cases. Please consider this before filling out an application for adoption!
