PET OF THE WEEK...B-2

This poor, sweet, senior girl was picked up as a stray. She is deaf and nearly blind. She had a terrible flea infestation and couldn't stop scratching. Plus, she had an eye infection that had gone untreated. We are treating her eye infection and she looks better already. We also treated her fleas and trimmed her nails that were so long they were curling under. She is feeling much better now. This girl is very old and we know the odds of finding a home willing to take a senior are slim to none. Nevertheless, she has a soft blanket to sleep on and we have done all we can to make her comfortable in her final days.

B-2 is approx. 10+ years old and weighs around 20 lbs.

***Available Date: November 16.

***"B-2" may be euthanized if not reclaimed, adopted or rescued by November 17.

***If you have any information about the owner of this dog please contact Jefferson County Animal Control at (304) 728-3289.

Introducing some of our most memorable cases...

Herclues, a purebred St. Bernard was brought into the shelter as an owner surrender. Hercules had spent his whole life tied to a chain, living outside. Approximately 100 lbs underweight and suffering from malnutrition and flea dermatitis, we were desperate to find a rescue willing to take Hercules and help him get back on his feet.

Olivia suffered from years of neglect and a severe flea allergy that left her without hair and with skin resembling an elephant. She was adopted and made a full recovery - that is - until the years of damage to her body caught up with her and she died of heart failure on April 4, 2008. Her owner is heartbroken but we know that her adoptive family gave Olivia the best life and she died a very happy dog.

Twister was seized as part of a cruelty case. He was only about three months old when he was seized but his weight was so low that the vet couldn't believe he was still alive. Twister is a purebred Great Dane! Twister got his name from his front left leg which was twisted unnaturally from malnutrition. This was causing his bones to soften as his body reabsorbed the calcium. Twister was adopted by one of the vet techs at the veterinary hospital where he was treated and , as you can see, he made a huge improvement just in three short months. He will never be as large as he should be due to his neglect and malnutrition as a puppy, but he will live a very happy life from now on.

Clarence was emaciated and starved when he came to animal control. Again, the vet was amazed that he was still alive. He was literally skin and bones. After treating his severe anemia, Clarence started to improve and put on weight. Today he's a healthy weight and still has a lot of energy for an old man. Clarence is living out the rest of his life with Happy Whiskers Animal Assistance rescue. As you can see, after a hard life, he's enjoying his retirement!

Who We Are

Jefferson County Animal Shelter is a kill shelter located in the tip of the Eastern Panhandle of WV, near Harper's Ferry and Charles Town. The shelter had a very high kill rate until June of 2006, when they started working with a volunteer to move as many adoptable dogs as possible into rescue. From June 2006 through December 2006, more than 100 dogs were adopted or taken into rescue. This marked a 75% reduction in the shelter's euthanasia rate!

How You Can Help

Please consider making a donation to the Happy Whiskers Animal Assistance Vet Care Fund, formerly known just as the "Vet Care Assistance Fund". On a larger scale, Happy Whiskers Animal Assistance is a newly formed rescue organization being started by one of the shelter's volunteers. Money to treat injured dogs at the shelter comes directly out of this fund. On May 28, 2008, we successfully obtained our Federal 501c3 nonprofit status. All donations to this fund are now tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Happy Whiskers also provides rescue and spay/neuter assistance to citizens of Jefferson County.

The Jefferson County Animal Shelter is finally allowed to provide vet care for injured dogs at the shelter but can only spend $75/dog. Puppies with Parvo are not allowed to be treated. Donations are used to cover the additional cost of emergency vetting that the County will not pay, vaccines for incoming puppies as well as treatment for Parvo. We have saved many dogs and puppies thanks to donations from citizens and rescue groups.

The shelter needs your help to be able to continue doing this. Please click on the PayPal link above and donate any amount towards vet care for the dogs at the shelter. Monies received will be spent on emergency vet care, vaccinations, medications and wormer for the dogs at the shelter. Donations will be tax deductible for tax year 2008 and the money goes into an account managed by our volunteer.

You can also check out our merchandise available in our Cafe Press store. The merchandise features shelter dogs and other animals taken in by Happy Whiskers Animal Assistance, Inc. and helps to promote shelter adoptions. All proceeds from the sale of this merchandise go towards vet care for the shelter dogs and other animals at Happy Whiskers.

Adopting A Friend

Adoption fee is $20 and there is no charge for approved rescues that want to pull a dog. All dogs are held for a 5 business-day period regardless of whether or not they are an owner surrender. The dogs can be released for adoption or rescue the day following their fifth day. If there is no adopter or rescue interest during their initial 5 days, the dog can be euthanized. If there is adoption or rescue interest during the initial 5 days, the dog will be held for an additional 5 days so that the adopter can pick up the dog or transport can be arranged for dogs going into rescue. This means that it is VERY important that you contact the shelter, or the shelter's volunteer, and express your interest in a particular dog prior to the end of its initial five days. The shelter has limited volunteer resources but most of the time the volunteer can help with transports for dogs going into rescue. You can contact the shelter's volunteer at smauck@frontiernet.net if you need transport help.
