Foster the connection between community and companion animals.
If you have lost a pet please check our website, www.vchumane.org, to see if your pet has been posted in our "Found Pets" section on our home page. You may also email us or call us. If you recognize a description of your pet on our web site, please call us right away to make arrangements to pick up your furry family member.
To reclaim a lost pet, you must be the owner of the animal and be able to identify it by sex, colors and markings, collar if any, and location lost. You will also need to provide vaccination documents as required by state law. (Proof of rabies vaccination.) You will also be required to pay a fee to help offset the cost of VCHS caring for your animal.
GIVING YOUR PET TO VCHS (SURRENDER)
Please remember that we primarily house and re-home stray animals. Very occasionally do we accept surrenders from pet owners who can no longer keep their animal. If you need to surrender an animal please call the shelter to see if we can accept your pet. We ask that you do not show up at the shelter with your pet without prior permission. Please be aware that there is a fee associated with surrendering your pet to VCHS to help us offset the cost of care for your animal until it is adopted to a new family.
LOOKING TO ADOPT
Your beloved companion may be waiting for you at this very moment in the Vernon County Humane Society Animal Shelter! Please read on.
The Vernon County Humane Society (VCHS) is a very active volunteer organization that is dedicated to the welfare and protection of all companion and domestic animals by promoting programs which benefit the health, safety and well-being of all residents of Vernon County. We have 501 (c) 3 status. Visit our web site at www.vchumane.org.
ABOUT OUR SHELTER
VCHS runs a no-kill animal shelter, the Vernon County Humane Society, a newly-built state-of-the-art facility. We list all of our adoptable pets on Petfinder.com.
We are based in Viroqua, Wisconsin, the county seat of government in Vernon County. We are in the southwest region of the state, and one edge of our county borders the Mississippi River. This is a largely rural, hilly region that is sparsely populated. Residents have below-average incomes. The dominant industry is agriculture.
Please contact us if you would like more information about one of the pets listed on Petfinder. We welcome your phone calls and emails. (See our contact information further down this page.)
Don't live in Vernon County?? No problem!! We are adopting more and more animals to people who live outside our service area. We'd be more than happy to work with you if you've spotted something you like! Just call or email for more details!
Adoption fees for dogs are $150 and for cats are range from free to $95, and include spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations (rabies & distemper), lymes, heartworm, or feline lukemia and FIV tests, flea and/or tick prevention, and an honorary VCHS membership for the remainder of the calendar year. There are no hidden costs. Potential adopters must fill out an application so that we can better match your family to one of our dogs or cats.
Visit this page on our web site to download a copy of our adoption form.
Please check our website for many volunteer, member, & donation opportunities. There is a way to help the animals even if you can't adopt one!
