Welcome New Volunteer - Volunteer Coordinator
November 3, 2008
HSMC has our first-ever volunteer, Volunteer Coordinator. We are pleased welcome Terry Carroll to that position. Terry is a long-time HSMC volunteer and animal lover who recently retired. With a little more time on her hands, we were pleased that she accepted our invitation to help develop our new volunteer program - Pet Pals.
Terry will be coordinating volunteer applications, setting-up volunteer trainings, meeting, and scheduling of events that need volunteer participation. We will be updating our files and developing a data base with all of our volunteers outlining special gifts & talents, times available, types of volunteer experiences you are interested in and providing training opportunities. Our goal is to have 1,000 volunteers and Friends by 2010!

NATIONAL ANIMAL SHELTER APPRECIATION WEEK...
November 3, 2008
...was organized by the Humane Society of the United States to remind us of the importance of our local animal shelters. Animal shelters provide a valuable service to our cities and towns by keeping stray animals off the streets, rescuing injured animals, returning lost pets to their owners, and helping families find new pets.
Did you realized that our shelter is running perpetually short on cat litter, dog food, and chewies for the dogs.
Animal shelters -- even the ones that aren't "no-kill" -- keep dogs and cats alive longer than if they were stray and trying to survive on their own. Foraging in an urban environment is very hard on an animal and it's even more difficult in a rural environment. Cars hit roaming dogs and cats. Stray animals may wander into another animal's territory and be injured in a fight. Small dogs and cats are easy prey for wild animals.
So remember the animal shelters this week. Volunteer if you have time. Donate if you have money. And don't forget the dedicated staff who care for hundreds of animals every day! Stop in for a visit, adopt, say "thank you"!
ALSO IN NOVEMBER - ADOPT A SENIOR PET MONTH!
"No Time To Teach New Tricks? Adopt a Senior Pet!"
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and Petfinder.com celebrate November as Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month. The upcoming holiday season may be an excellent time to put some balance in your life and adopt a senior pet. Senior pets can and do bond very strongly with adopters. Many seem to understand they have been given another chance at a happy life and are grateful for the opportunity to love someone and be loved in return.

Adopting a friend
Before you can adopt a pet, we will require proof of address. If you do not rent, bring proof of home ownership with you. If you do rent in Marathon County, a signed letter of consent from your landlord will be needed. It is a real shame when a pet is returned or abandoned because a renter was not supposed to have pets.
There are several other things to consider before you adopt. The humane society does want to find homes for all the animals we receive, however, we want to find permanent and loving homes for them. That means we do our best to ensure a pet isn't returned because the person giving it a home didn't think this through completely.
