A Brief History

Adams County Humane Society was formed in the early 1970's by a group of concerned citizens. It was incorporated in 1975. The animal control officer at the time had to shelter the animals at his farm. Eventually, this dedicated group decided that a shelter in Adams/Friendship was needed. Through the endless hours doing fundraisers and hard work by this group of citizens, in 1988 the first building was constructed, a permanent home for ACHS to better help the animals of Adams County. Through hard work and fundraisers, in 2000, plans were made to expand the shelter into a larger facility with outdoor exercise areas and better separation of animal areas. After a generous memorial gift given by Dr. Wesley Willard, the Board of Directors decided to add on once again in 2008, adding a surgical room, an intake room, isolation room and creating a larger cat room. Although the numbers of animals has increased since 1975, we take great pride in our animal care and adoption rate. ACHS continues to strive to improve the quality of life for animals through education ACHS is a private non-profit 501.C3 organization. We need your support to continue our important work of helping the animals and people of Adams County and surrounding areas. ACHS takes great pride in the care we give our animals on their way to loving forever homes. We are open from 12:00 to 5:00 P.M. Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sunday 12-4pm. Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (by apointment only) and holidays. Visit our web page at
