Here is a letter from an FIV adopter:
Tonja,
I wanted to write to let you know that Magic is doing just great! I renamed him C.J. which stands for Charlie Junior, in memory of my FIV positive cat who passed away in July. I also wanted to thank you and the Dane County Humane Society for giving an FIV positive cat a chance at life and adoption. Just as a little background…
I found Charlie as a stray kitten that I planned to turn it to my local humane society. When I took him to the vet for a check up, he tested positive for FIV. At the time I had never even heard of feline FIV. My vet let me know that if I did take him to a shelter they would most likely euthanize him. Well, by that time I was in love with him and couldn’t do that!
I was really fortunate to have a veterinarian that is familiar with FIV and doesn’t see it as being a condition that is cause for euthanization if the cat is otherwise healthy. She provided me with a lot of educational materials on FIV and I did a lot of reading online. She told me she has seen many FIV cats live long and happy lives. But, that it is always important to get them to the vet for treatment at the first sign of an illness because of their suppressed immune system. I also had another cat at home so I was concerned about that. The vet let me know that, while Charlie was born with it via his mother, generally the way FIV is spread is through a deep bite wound. Not through casual contact like using the same food dish or litter box.
Charlie was the sweetest, most energetic, loveable guy and I’m so happy that he wasn’t unnecessarily euthanized. When he died people said he was so lucky to have found me, but I know that it was really me who was lucky to find him. In his memory, I decided I wanted to adopt another FIV positive cat. And I found C.J.!
He is an absolute sweetheart. He’s made himself right at home here. I don’t think I’ve ever known a more lovey-dovey, snuggly cat! He loves to give big hugs around the neck of anyone he meets. He’s already a big favorite of my friends and the workers at the vet clinic. A few have asked me if all FIV cats are as great as the two I’ve had. I said maybe so! Give one a chance!
So, just wanted to thank you again for allowing me to adopt him and thank the DCHS for their open-minded and educated policy on adopting out FIV positive cats. Keep up the great work!

Who We Are
HappyCat Club is a small group of experienced and dedicated cat lovers who are helping to find homes for homeless cats in Madison, Wisconsin (Dane County). We foster cats from various rescues and from the Dane County Humane Society. While providing care and rehabilitation to these cats, we get to know them well. We then work hard to help market these precious gems, so that connections are made with people looking for new best friends. Our goal is to help the Dane County Humane Society and other rescues expand their ability to find loving and permanent homes for more homeless cats and to help build a No Kill community in Dane County.
