This is a beautiful little story we came accross:

ARCHAEOLOGY

In some future year, a different proprieter of the land , out walking on a fine spring day,may pass that way--- along the abandoned fencerow where the blackberry canes are white with bloom and the wild rose makes mounds of pink at the fields edge. That brushy line, in which no posts or wire remain, divides two meadows of native grass that fall away toward the dark of woods on either side.

The walker will discover, tucked in close against a thicket, a curious mound of flat fieldstones, too neatly placed and fitted to be accidental. Curiosity will bring him back another day carrying a shovel.

He will lift the stones aside and excavate beneath them, possibly imagining a treasure. But what he will unearth will be only the folded skeleton of a dog, and four large plastic buttons of the kind found on a canvas hunting coat. Also, if he looks carefully, the wing bones---finer that matchsticks--- of a small bird.

If that man is a hunter, he will understand immediately what he's found. He will know that the creatures those artifacts represent are gone from there, away to some field of always autumn. I like to think he will replace the earth and stones, and leave the place as it was--- a little cache of things that tell no story except when all together-- safe again from rushing time.

This essay first appeared as the preface to The Rufus Chronicle: Another Autumn, by C. W. Gusewelle. Used by permission.

He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea. He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being; by the way he rests against my leg; by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him. (I think it makes him sick with worry when he is not along to care for me.) When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile. When I am happy, he is joy unbounded. When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags. Without him, I am only another man. With him, I am all-powerful. He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion. With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace. He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant. His head on my knee can heal my human hurts. His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things. He has promised to wait for me... whenever... wherever — in case I need him. And I expect I will — as I always have. He is just my dog.

Tears and Laughter Gene Hill

I can't think of anything that brings me closer to tears than when my old dog — completely exhausted after a hard day in the field — limps away from her nice spot in front of the fire and comes over to where I'm sitting and puts her head in my lap, a paw over my knee, and closes her eyes, and goes back to sleep. I don't know what I've done to deserve that kind of friend

We are having several dogs arrive in our care with Heartworms. If anyone doesn't know, heartworms are very dangerous and deadly to dogs. It is expensive and difficult to treat. It is much easier to use preventatives to ward off heartworm infections. Our organization will not adopt to anyone who does not use heartworm preventative. Please get your dogs on preventative today if they are not already.

Brittanies are very high energy hunting dogs, bred to run and they love to do it. Because of this trait, our organization has had several adopted dogs killed by vehicles. As an organization, we are close to a requirement for some sort of fencing or containment. Please consider a fence to help keep your potential adopted dog safe!

We are chronically short of funds, as many rescues are. We rely mostly on donations and adoption fees for funding. If you would like to donate a small amount for the care of our dogs, please click hereDONATE HERE.

We are in great need of foster homes in Minnesota as there are many dogs in the midwest that could use our help. If you are at all interested in fostering a Brittany, please give us a call or fill out an application link lower on this page. We could really use your help with either fostering or donations.

Who We Are

Hi. We are members of the National Brittany Rescue and Adoption Network (NBRAN) in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. We are a private, non-government group that rescues Brittanies in the Upper Midwest. or anywhere necessary . We pull dogs from shelters and help with owner placements. We foster them till a forever home is found for them. Here is a link to our parent organization. WWW.NBRAN.ORGThe dogs are fostered in Minnesota Wisconsin and Iowa.

If you would like to know more about us or read our blog about our experiences, click here. .ABOUT US

We also are in need of volunteers for temporary foster care, transport runs, administrative tasks, and helping with outreach events. There is a Brittany Canine Railroad that transports dogs around the country to they're forever homes. We desperately need help as were are getting overwhelmed with homeless Brittanies. Without more volunteers, we may not be able to save all the Brittanies that need our help. If you are interested in volunteering, please click here.ONLINE VOLUNTEER APPLICATION
