Our Featured Pet...BISCUIT

Please help!

Biscuit was surrendered to rescue when her mother moved into an assisted living home and her two daughter’s couldn’t care for her. She had been kept up to date with her vaccinations, spayed, and was even microchipped. However, immediately upon picking up Biscuit it was evident that she was not healthy.

Biscuit is only 1.5 years old and weighed 6.8 lbs, but was very scrawny, at the time she entered rescue. She has been struggling her whole life. She was born the runt of the litter in AR. In her short life she has dealt with giardia, chronic reoccurring diarrhea & vomiting, reoccurring blood in her stool, periods of not eating or drinking, limping, diminished appetite, weight loss, running a temperature, and has been sluggish.

Biscuit has had numerous fecal checks, diet changes, blood panels, been on several medications, had exploratory surgery, and x-rays. Upon entering rescue we completed many of these again and also included a bile acid test and an ultrasound along with diet changes. After 3 weeks in rescue Biscuit is now at 6.4 lbs and continues to have intermittent diarrhea and vomiting.

Biscuit walks with an arch in her back. Her ribs and pelvic bone are visible, as are all of the bones her paws; and her front scapula (shoulder) bones protrude. Due to her low weight Biscuit is usually cold and enjoys crawling in her bed, yet under the cushion, with a blanket on top of the cushion. Sometimes all you can see is a little nose sticking out. She enjoys the warmth of the sun on the deck. Despite Biscuit’s medical condition she continues to be extremely lovable, sweet, and will pick up a small toy and try to shake it to death from time to time!

Biscuit has been to two different vets in the Southern Wisconsin area in three weeks who suggested diet changes. DRNA felt that time is of the essence with Biscuit as she continues to lose weight. DRNA is now working with a vet hospital in Illinois who we have had past success with. After discussing Biscuit’s medical condition with the doctor over the phone she agreed that Biscuit needed serious diagnostics! DRNA received an estimate for $1500 for diagnostics which would include exploratory surgery and a two day stay with IV’s among other tests. Biscuit’s estimate was approved by the DRNA board and her appointment was scheduled for the afternoon of August 11th.

Please consider donating to Biscuit’s medical fund and please mark it “Biscuit”. Besides Biscuit’s medical costs there’s countless hours of dedicated volunteer time devoted to Biscuit’s care; numerous hours and trips to the vet have been and are also being made. Please find it in your heart to help this very, very young pup who hasn’t been able to enjoy life; not to mention her years as a pup. THANK YOU!

Please consider making a donation today!

Dachshund Breed

If you're thinking of becoming a dachshund owner...let me rephrase that...if you're thinking of becoming owned by a dachshund--because those of us that have a dachshund in the house know that they own us, not vise versa--there's a few things you must know about the dachshund breed. Here's a few.

In my eyes, the most important is that statistics show that 1in every 4 dachshunds will suffer from Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). IVDD can cause paralysis and loss of bowel/bladder control if not treated immediately. IVDD can be treated through surgery which is most successful within the first 48 hours of incident. Alternative treatments can be used such as water therapy or acupuncture. Prevention methods can be utilized to prevent IVDD; they include but are not limited to using ramps to limit jumping, supplements usch as glucosamine, vitamin C, and fish oil, and keeping nails trimmed. Support groups are available.

Rescue Every Dog and the Canadian Dachshund Rescue are excellent sites for more important traits of the dachshund. Please take a moment to visit these sites!

Want to stay informed with what foods have been added to the recall? Please visit The Pet Food List it lists all the brands of food and lists the recalled foods in red.

Better yet...visit some of these websites and learn what to look for in feeding your pets. After all, they are a member of our family, right?

Did you know that that four of the top five major pet food companies in the United States are subsidiaries of major multinational food production companies. Yes...Colgate Palmolive (which produces Hills Science Diet), Heinz, Nestle, and Mars. The pet food industry is huge and extremely profitable ($25 billion a year in revenue worldwide). While manufacturers may appear to have the best interests of your companion animals at heart, they are generally more concerned about their stock prices and bottom lines.

Come Visit Us!

All of our dachshunds are in foster homes. What does that mean? Our dachshunds are in our personal homes, as part of our family. They pack their bags (if they have any) and move right in and become a member of our family! That's why it's so hard to give them up. We are not a shelter with 9-5 hours and an Open/Close sign. Our fosters are placed throughout the United States. This Petfinder ID serves the Great Lakes region concentrating on Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.
