Why we do what we do
We do not discriminate. We do not rescue dogs specifically because of their breed or age. We rescue dogs that need us to save their lives. They may be at risk of euthanasia for many reasons. Primarily this is due to space limitations or health issues. Our first dogs arrived on May 19th through the efforts of two volunteers who drove through the night to the Kentucky/Tennessee border. Holli and her nine 1 week old puppies, and Chiqua who was expecting her puppies any day, were carefully transported back and placed in foster homes, where they would be until their puppies reached eight weeks of age and their forever homes were found. Since our first adoption of Shelby took place on June 15, 2007, JR’s Pups-N-Stuff has found forever homes for over 290 dogs, we are working to place over 50 dogs right now as well. Most recently we placed about 15 cats. In the months that followed, eighteen heartworm positive dogs were treated have already gone to loving forever homes. Heartworm would be a death sentence for these dogs if they were left in the shelters. Twenty Eight of our dogs were born in the rescue and eighteen were local owner surrenders. A long term goal is to be able to provide more local assistance and we have reached that goal. Currently over 60% of the dogs we have rescued were born in Wisconsin, surrendered by local owners, deemed unadoptable by local humane socieites or came from the animal control facilities. There are dogs in need all over this country, and we will continue to help them, but helping those in our own communities is a way to be able to give something back. When the dogs arrive, they come to us tired, filthy and without a notion of love. They are usually underweight and unhealthy. It's amazing to see them forgive us for what others have done to them. They embrace their foster parents and begin their journey to new and happy lives. Life’s greatest rewards come from watching a rescue dog play with a ball for the first time…or enjoy the warm hearth in front of the fireplace…or when they first understand that food does indeed come every day. When a child reaches out to love that rescue dog - it melts your heart. To see these dogs come from such horrible circumstances and rise above their past, is truly inspiring. They forgive and forget as they play with their new toys after a nice walk around the block. The things we humans can learn from our dogs sometimes leaves us aw struck. Our rescue was built by a network of foster parents. Through the growth, we have discovered life’s greatest joys in the kind, wonderful and caring people that have joined us. Not only people who want to foster dogs, but who will transport them, build websites, do home visits, and manage paperwork. As the group grows, we are able to save the lives of more dogs every day. We are doing what we set out to do. We've become the little rescue with a big heart. "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by moments that take our breath away." Every dog I meet that needs help, takes my breath away. Join us and let a dog take your breath away.
Please check our petfinder listing to see the boys and girls still waiting for their forever homes.

A woman in rescue wrote this note to her adopters after several rough adoptions. She makes some very valid points that we'd like to share with you. Note to adopters: Lassie and Cleo and Rin Tin Tin and Toto don't show up in rescue. We don't get the elegantly coiffed, classically beautiful, completely trained, perfectly behaved dog. We get the leftovers. Dogs that other people have incompetently bred, inadequately socialized, ineffectively "trained," and badly treated. Most Rescue dogs have had it. They've been pushed from one lousy situation to another. They've never had proper veterinary care, kind and consistent training, or sufficient company. They've lived outside, in a crate, or in the basement. They're scared, depressed and anxious. Some are angry. Some are sick. Some have given up. But we are Rescue and we don't give up. We never give up on a dog. We know that a dog is a living being, with a spirit and a heart and feelings. Our dogs are not commodities, things, or garbage. They are part of sacred creation and they deserve as much love and care and respect as the next Westminster champion. So please, please don't come to rescue in the hopes of getting a "bargain," or indeed of "getting" anything. Come to Rescue to give, to love, to save a life -- and to mend your own spirit. For Rescue will reward you in ways you never thought possible. I can promise you this -- a rescue dog will make you a better person.
