Who We Are

The Lincoln County Humane Society (LCHS) was founded in the spring of 1977 and by January of 1979, had formally opened the animal shelter located at 200 N. Memorial Drive in Merrill, Wisconsin, to care for stray and unwanted animals. The building was funded equally by the city of Merrill and Lincoln County. The land was provided by Lincoln County at the east edge of the Lincoln County Fairgrounds. The shelter handles approximately 1000 dogs, cats, and other animals per year. The animals at the shelter are cared for every day, 365 days a year and the shelter is open to the public six days a week, Monday through Saturday 12pm to 4pm and by appointment. All types of animals are accepted. In addition to caring for stray and unwanted animals the animal shelter will isolate bite cases and suspected rabid animals as required by law if requested. Animals that are brought in as strays are housed for seven days according to state law allowing owners adequate time to reclaim them. After that period of time, the dogs are vaccinated against Rabies, Distemper and Bordetella and de-wormed. Cats are vaccinated against Rabies and Distemper and given Revolution. All animals are groomed, nails clipped and provided with healthcare if needed. As of January 1, 2003, all animals adopted from the shelter will be spayed or neutered before they leave to live a happy life in their new homes. Adopters receive a free health exam by area veterinarians.

Adopting a friend

Like almost every animal shelter in the nation, we wrestle with the problem of animal overpopulation every day. During summer and fall our shelter is filled with kittens and puppies that need good homes. Come spend some time with our animals and see if you should adopt a lifelong friend! To assure that a pet is a compatible match for you, we encourage spending time with your prospective adoptee. You are more than welcome to bring in your own pets to visit, and see how they act with each other. Go to our website at www.furrypets.com to download the necessary adoption forms, fill them out and bring them with you on your visit.
