Thanks to you, all of our friends that were courtesy listed have found new homes!
News
Join Baci and Olive at the Manitowoc Shopko on Tuesday evenings, from 7-9, beginning November 24, as we ring bells for the Salvation Army. We'd love to see you!
Thanks to our friend Chris at FluffyButts Rescue Resort in Iowa, the dogs are sleeping in warm, fluffy Bubble Butt Beds this year. They love them! You can get them and support the animals at FluffyButts by going to http://www.fluffybutts.com and go to the shopping section.
We are overloaded with dogs this fall - more than ever before - and while we are delighted to be able to provide a home and haven for these new "old" friends, the expenses are getting higher.
Want to help?
While your donation would not be tax-deductible (because we do not have 501(c)(3) status), donations are more than welcome. Money is always helpful, but in-kind donations are even better. Do you have a talent that you are willing to share? We have several projects that need attention here at the sanctuary.
Know something about building things? Currently, we need money and skilled labor to put up a wooden picket safety fence around the front of the building to keep in any escape artists from flying out the door. We are also in need of ramps, a doggie door cut into the side of the dog run area, a new porch, and other small construction projects. If you are a handy man or woman, we could really use your help! And, of course, all of these projects require building materials, so donations of building supplies would be like winning the lottery for us!
Are you technologically savvy? As you can see, this website is bare-minimum. We're looking for someone to volunteer to design a new, gorgeous website to bring us into the homes of more people.
Artistic? We need a logo for Hundenruhe Haven. Please email with your ideas!
Like to shop online? You can help Hundenruhe Haven by shopping at your favorite online stores through the iGive portal. Every time you make a purchase, a donation is made to Hundenruhe Haven. Simply go to iGive.com, register (it's free!), choose Hundenruhe Haven as your charity, and use the iGive portal to go to your favorite online stores - including Amazon.com! Spread the word to everyone on your email address list, and help us even more!
If you'd like to help us continue to care for the dogs here at Hundenruhe Haven, please donate to the Stahmer's account at the Kiel Veterinary Clinic, 575 Belitz Dr., Kiel WI 53042. Our house is filled to the brim right now with dogs that need maintenance vet care (current maintenance meds, not including vet visits are about $300 per month), and any help that you can give is much appreciated! Other welcome donations include bleach, dishwashing liquid (we use it with the bleach on the floors), and volunteer services (see above)!

Hundenruhe Haven is located on a forty-acre hobby farm in rural northeastern Wisconsin. Hundenruhe is a German word – Hunden [hoon’den] means “dogs” and Ruhe [roo’a] means peace. Hence, “Dogs’ Peace”. We accept dogs from other rescues that are 12+ years old (sometimes a little younger) and they live with us in our home (not in kennels), safe and loved, until they pass away. At this time, we do not accept dogs from private parties.
Just over seven years ago, we, Dan and Jodee, realized that our lifestyle and home provided a unique opportunity to do some good. Our own (rescued) dogs had become elderly and gradually went to the Rainbow Bridge. As our pets aged, we realized how charming and special the older souls are, and how much knowledge we had gained over the years living with and caring for our canine kids. We decided to rip out the carpeting in our house, install vinyl flooring, and begin taking in the very aged, unadoptable dogs from other rescues.
The entire yard around the house is fenced with six-foot high chainlink fence and five foot high welded wire fencing. All doors to the house have fence between dogs and the outside world. In addition, attached to the yard fencing is an approximately three acre field fenced securely with four foot high welded wire fencing.
We have a special love for the smooth-coated terriers and greyhounds (of both sizes), as that is where our expertise lies. In order to keep order and make sure everyone gets plenty of lap time, our limit is thirteen dogs at any given time. Because the dogs live with us in our home, separating expenses is difficult, so Hundenruhe Haven does not have non-profit status. All expenses come from our (limited!) private income.
Jodee is a public school teacher, teaching at-risk high school students, (home all summer) and Dan is a retired teacher. He now drives handicapped children to school for our local school district and is in and out all day to let puppers out. We take separate vacations so that someone is always here with the dogs. (We consider just being here together on the farm all summer to be a vacation!) We have been involved in dog rescue for the past 20 years - Jodee is a former humane educator for a small humane society, and we owned and operated a dog training academy for several years.
Occasionally, we are asked to help find homes for needy pups, which we gladly undertake if we have room. Those animals will be listed here on Petfinder. We hope that you will contact us to provide one of our “kids” a warm forever home!
Adopting a friend
Hundenruhe Haven Senior Dog Sanctuary is primarily a hospice and permanent sanctuary for the animals that find a home here. However, we do occasionally rehabilitate pets and find them new forever homes. These pets are listed here on our Petfinder site. If you are interested in adopting one of our friends, please contact us via email. You will be asked to fill out an application, and we will contact your references. Hundenruhe Haven does not adopt on a first-come, first-served basis. We really want the animals in our charge to find the home best matched for them. We will consider out-of-state adoptions with good references. Adoption fees vary depending upon the animal and its situation.
Occasionally we will list animals available through our veterinarian's clinic as a courtesy to the clinic. These animals will be listed with alternate contact information.
Come Visit Us!
Our animals are aged and sometimes frail, and live in our home environment with us. Therefore, we do try to keep visitors to a minimum. If you are interested in one of our animals, we will make an appointment for you to visit them here, or in your home.
