HILLVIEW HAVEN A PLACE FOR HORSES AND CHILDREN TO HEAL Hillview Haven is a small miniature horse rescue located on 60 acres. Our purpose is to rescue and rehabilitate miniature horses in hopes that adoption may be possible. We would also like to share the love that these ponies can give with children with emotional needs. Many times miniature horses have not been socialized, have been neglected or even abused. These little horses need to learn to trust people. I have been employed in animal welfare for many years and it has been very frustrating to see horses fall through the cracks. According to the State Statutes horses and ponies are considered livestock, not companion animals. Unfortunately they are not afforded the same protection. Hillview Haven is trying to help horses and are specializing in miniatures providing food, shelter, medical attention, socializing, and love to all our little residents until they find permanent homes. Some will remain at the refuge to liveout their lives. In the future our organization will be starting a new program. Our people friendly ponies will be used to help children with emotional problems. Children 5-12 years of age will have the opportunity to make friends with their favorite pony. Groom them, tell them their problems, feel loved by them. Research proves that animals are very therapeutic, and what little girl or boy hasn't dreamed of owning a pony. They can in a sense share in the ownership of one of the ponies, just by coming out with a parent or guardian and spending with the ponies. This is not a certified therapeutic program. Just a place where children suffering with emotional issues can come to a day camp throughout the spring summer and fall and spend some time bonding with the ponies and other animals. It is a good way for kids to get away from their problems and a great way to give the ponies some much needed attention. A general educational portion will be included to learn how to walk a horse, how to groom them, and how to provide proper care of a horse. Information about this program will be posted as it is further developed. All farm visits will be held on weekends, participants will need to be by referral or invitation and will be limited to several weekend afternoons per month. This program is scheduled to start in the summer of 2009.
