QUESTIONS regarding adoptions through OBAH Q: Where are the dogs now? A: They are generally still in the gas-chamber kill shelters in Louisiana until we find their forever, approved home. Q: How do they get to WI? A: OBAH arranges transport from LA to WI generally within 1-4 weeks od adoption approval. Q: Can I meet them first, before adopting? A: The animals are literally on their last day of life; in order to save them, we must have homes....we do not have a "holding" area for them to go. Q: I am leary about adopting a dog I have never met, how can we know he/she is well-behave and will fit with our family? A: We are very picky about the homes that we pick for each animal. Your home may not be right for one animals, but right for another. We pay attention to all the "signs" which is why our adoption process is so thorough. Q: What is your success rate? A: Since Hurricane Katrina, we have adopted out over 500 dogs and we have had to re-home 1 of them (due to the dog chasing the elderly cats in the home.) Q: Does any cat/dog get put up for adoption at the gas-chamber kill shelters you work with? A: NO! Less than 10% make it to adoption row; the ones that do are some of the best animals in the country. The are euthanized if there are any aggression issues with humans or people. Q: What do I need to do to adopt a pet through OBAH? A: Email us requesting an application: in the subject heading write( "Request Application for "name of pet".)

Who We Are

OBAH began September 2005 after Hurricane Kartina devastated the gulf coast. Our founder, Caryn Majeskie, realized that there was a desperate need for people to get into the areas for search and rescue as well as feeding and watering the animals on the streets. Once the news broke, local news stations and newspapers took ahold of the story and the operation took off. Our goals and dreams are to continue our work as a search and rescue team and have a facility that will represent a home where we can house the animals until permanent families are found. The Animal Home will have an upstais with bedrooms for the animals (including beds, chairs, TV's, radio and a window) where no animal will ever be alone. They will share a bedroom with a special friend or 2. The first level will represent, like our homes, a living room, kitchen, bathroom, hallway, garage...everything you would find in your typical home. Outside will have acres upon acres of fenced in land with trees, doggy hammocks, barns, kiddie pools, ponds, large umbrellas....everything a dog could dream of! Our main goal is for the animal to be rescue and if a home is not immediately available, they will still live as the deserve, like Kings and Queens. And probably a few Princes and Princesses. OBAH could have returned to WI with so many more animals if we had a place to return to with them. If you have the same visions as we do, I hope that you will consider volunteering with OBAH and helping make our dreams a reality for these precious souls.

Adopting a friend

The majority of our animals listed have very recently been rescued from one of 2 gas-chamber kill-shelters in Louisiana, so the animals are not up here. We find pets to completely match what a family is searching for. I know it may seem a bit odd to not meet a dog before you commit to him/her but be assured that we want the best situation for the dog and you. If we feel that a particulr animal you contact us about is not the right fit for your home or family, we may point you in another direction. We have placed hundreds of cats and dogs this way and everyone, yes I mean everyone, has been more than happy. And ALL of the placements have worked for both the animal and family. We do have an adoption fee which varies on the animal. Please take into account that most of the animals are spayed/neutered (cost in WI: $250-$500), complete vetting (cost in WI: $minimum 100), heartwom tested (in WI $50-70), plus since we do have to transport them here to WI from LA, there is that cost as well. However, if you look at the breakdown, you are in essence saving money by adopting from us. And you are saving an animal that had 1-2 days on adoption row where it would have been put into a gas-chamber if not rescued. These animals we save will change your life. They are so thankful for being saved that they will do anything to fit into your life. They just want to please. Please give these gentle souls a chance.
