News " Morton Building Project" .
The Northwoods Humane Society has made the commitment to build an addition to our existing Morton Building. The monies that will seed this project come from monies that we have saved for an expansion and from memorial gifts from the estates of long time supporters Mary Mohr and Kay Somnes. The cost of the project is approximately $210,000. We are still in need of raising an additional $50,000.Dixie is a female, 2 year old, blue heeler/pit mix. She is a sweetheart with lots of personality. Dixie LOVES to play fetch, and with the mix that she is, it is hard to tire her of the game! Dixie is particular about her friends, and would prefer to be an olnly dog. If you are a fan of bully mixes, she could be the girl for you. She has that pittie swagger when she trots, and would make an excellent companion dog for any one without another dog. As with all of our adoptable animals, Dixie is spayed, rabies vaccinated, and UTD on shots. All of our dogs undergo a certified veterinarian inspection before going to their forever home as well.
We are so excited about this new addition. It will give us seven indoor-outdoor isolation runs. This will allow us to isolate potentially ill dogs that have never been confined before, anxious and frightened dogs and dogs that just need quiet time to settle down before becoming a part of the dogs available for adoption.
This new addition will provide a cat isolation area where we can keep the potential of upper respiratory infection out of the healthy population, let the frightened cats have some quiet time and work with semi-feral cats so that they may become adoptable.
Currently we have no special spot for other animals such as rabbits, chinchillas, ferrets, iguanas, guinea pigs, birds or any of the other animals who we never really know who is going to show up. But with the completetion of the new building we will be ready for anyone that crosses our threshold.
We will also have a largegrooming room with a walk in shower for the large dogs, a grooming area, washer and dryer. We recently received a grant from St. Croix Foundation for a floor scale which will be a blessing when weighing large breed dogs, monitoring their health, and determining appropriate dosages for medicine and wormers.
The center of the building will be an indoor training, exercise and socialization area. This will give us an opportunity to work one on one in a safe, quiet environment with the dogs as well as open up a training area for classes for the public. As you can see, this building will be an important growth step in caring for NHS animals.
Matching Funds = Beehive Botanicals has made the offer of matching the first $10,000 in donations with a $10,000 gift! This opportunity will be available through the end of October. Can you help us complete this project? Please go to our website www.northwoodshumanesociety.org and click on the donate now button. We will have a donor board in the building which will list those that have supported this project. All donations are appreciated and needed.
If you can help us please donate now. NHS continues to work hard to help animals in need. because of supporters who share their time, talents and resources we continue to grow!
Thank you for your Support!
Who We Are NHS was authorized as a non-profit organization in 1987. Our shelter was opened in Oct. of 1996 on an 87 acre site. It is surrounded by beautiful rolling fields that change with the seasons, making our volunteer-mowed walking trails a never-ending source of pleasure. We have 16 dog runs and 30 cat runs. The building also includes an office, receiving area, visitation room, cat and dog isolation areas, indoor and outdoor play areas for cats, three outdoor exercise runs and a 100 x 100 fenced play yard for dogs. Other areas include laundry & grooming, kitchen and storage rooms. We have a small paid staff and rely heavily on volunteer help in all areas. There are always too many animals, too much to do and far too little time! But, in spite of it all, the shelter is a fun place to work or visit. Our animals are treated like the individuals they are and for many, this is the first stable and kindly home they've ever known. We have a website at http://www.northwoodshumanesociety.org or you may e-mail us at nhs1@centurytel.net .
Our dogs love to sleep on Kuranda Dog beds, but we don't have enough for everyone.
If you would like to donate a bed at a special wholesale price for a another dog to sleep in comfort, please donate a Kuranda dog bed.
