Since 1967, the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has united more than 115,000 companion animals with loving families, cared for over 100,000 injured and orphaned wild animals, and made the world a better place for ountless others through advocacy and education. PAWS provides direct care to close to 8,000 animals each year. More than 1,000 volunteers assist PAWS staff in all aspects of our organization in fundraising, community outreach, feeding wild animals, walking dogs, playing with cats and more. Gifts from individuals and organizations provide more than 80 percent of PAWS' annual funding.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the number of animals that we receive and adopt each day, we are unable to guarantee that specific animals shown on our adoption site will still be available when you come to the shelter. We make every effort to update our adoption page as often as possible. In addition, we are unable to hold animals by phone, fax, or e-mail. Thank you for understanding. An asterisk (*) by a cat name indicates that it is located at our Cat City location.

Adoption Policies
All adoptions require a completed survey and meeting
with an adoption counselor. You must
be at least 18 years old and have current ID. If you are
adopting a dog, all members of your family--both human
and dog--should visit with the new dog to make sure it is a good match, and to allow behavior experts to advise you on how to avoid
problems.
Placement Program for High-Interest Animals
Certain animals generate a high amount of interest from many qualified adopters.
To manage this, PAWS only accepts the first six surveys received from potential
adopters who want to adopt a high-interest animal. With the help of PAWS’ staff,
you can determine if a high-interest animal is a good fit for you using the Meet
Your Match parameters. You should also be sure you can fulfill
the guidelines listed below before submitting your adopter survey for a high-interest
animal. Otherwise, we encourage you to consider one of the many other wonderful animals
awaiting a new home.
- Adoption surveys must be submitted in person and approved by a PAWS adoption
counselor prior to the time the animal becomes available for adoption.
- After the six surveys are reviewed, the selected applicant will be contacted
to come back for a visit. The visit must occur on the day the animal becomes
available during normal adoption hours.
- The selected applicant must be able to come to the shelter along with all members
of the household, including all canines in residence if adopting another dog.
- If the selected applicant is unable to comply with these guidelines, or
decides not to adopt the animal, another approved applicant will be selected
and invited to come in for a visit.
Interested parties will not be contacted if the animal is returned to his/her
original guardian, if the animal is deemed unadoptable, or if their application is
not selected.
Foster Care Services
Foster care volunteers provide temporary care for kittens, puppies,
dogs, and cats in their greater-Seattle area homes. Some
animals only need a home for three days, others may need
three months. By offering your time, energy, and home to
an animal in need, you prepare the animal for adoption into
a permanent home as well as prevent overcrowding in our
shelter. PAWS is always looking for foster homes, especially
throughout the busy spring and summer seasons.
Learn more about the foster care program on our website or call the Foster Care Coordinator at 425.787.2500 x822.
