In January 2007, we received our first grant for $5000.00. With those funds we partnered with Pet Savers to sponsor a large scale, low cost spay/neuter clinic in Chewelah WA on March 25, 2007 for low income people earning $30,000 or less a year. Eighty spays and 48 neuters were performed in a little under 7 hours. We followed this up with a clinic in May in Kettle Falls WA and altered 139 cats. Next on the agenda is a clinic in Springdale WA. We have also recently received grant funds to purchase equipment to run these clinics on our own. A member of our group has purchased a travel trailer specifically chosen for its adaptability into a mobile unit that will enable us with this equipment to travel to the many rural areas of the county to spay and neuter. The Springdale clinic was a great success! 155 cats altered!
Who We Are
Stevens County Cat Care was formed in early 2005 by a handful of people who wanted to address the enormous cat problem in the county. We began by offering vouchers for low income people that paid about half the cost of a spay or neuter. Nearly 400 of these vouchers have now been used. As grant funds became available, we began organizing large scale, low cost spay/neuter clinics and hope to have a mobile unit operating in the near future. Although we do not have a shelter at this time, nearly all our members are fostering in their homes. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but as we continue to pick up volunteers with the heart to do this work we're hoping that we can continue to grow and make a difference in the lives of cats that would normally fall through the cracks, victims of neglect, indifference, poverty and ignorance.
Adopting a Friend
We'd like to help you find the "purrfect" companion. Most of our cats and kittens come with a sad story. We've had three day old kittens found in a dumpster. We've had newborn kittens wrapped in a towel and thrown over a fence. We've had kittens whose "owners" moved away and left them behind to fend for themselves. We've had kittens whose stray mamas were run over by a car or eaten by owls or coyotes. The list, unfortunately, goes on and on. The good news is that all these sad stories are now going to have happy endings. They're in a safe and loving foster homes waiting for that certain someone who is going to love them forever. If you would like a kitten and do not have another pet in the home to befriend it, we suggest that you adopt two. There is absolutely nothing like watching two kittens play, groom and snuggle. In these days when most people work outside of their homes, one kitten can be a very lonely thing. All of our kittens are at least 8 weeks old so that they can be spayed or neutered when they come to you. All kittens and adult cats will have their FVRCP vaccination and be wormed.
