Greener Grasses
Our Featured Pet...
Who We Are
Greener Grasses is a privately run, not-for-profit small animal rescue organization located in Northern Seattle.
We focus on rescuing small domesticated exotic animals that have needs that often cannot be met by regular animal shelters. We currently specialize in guinea pigs, but may expand as we gain a network of foster homes.
We are operated by volunteers with full-time jobs, therefore all visits are schedule by appointment only. We do not have a commercial facility-- our main facility is operated out of the private household of the rescue director.
Our success is wholly dependent on our network of specialized rescue groups, foster homes, and volunteers. If you would like to help or join us in any capacity please contact us.
Adopting a friend
Requirements:
We have minimum standards for housing as per
CavyCages.com. Guinea pigs must
have a cage of at
least 7.5 square feet for 1 or 2 pigs. We will provide and construct
adequately sized cube cages for you for just the cost of materials if
you prefer not to make your own. Wire floors and outdoor cages are not
considered adequate housing.
We STRONGLY prefer to adopt animals in pairs or groups. If you already have
a guinea pig, we will schedule 'dates' and teach introduction techniques
to be sure they get along. We will only adopt animals to live alone under
exceptional circumstances.
We will not adopt animals as gifts. The primary caretaker must be
involved in the adoption process.
We will not adopt to children under the age of 18 as primary
caretakers. A parent or guardian must sign the contract and be heavily
involved in day-to-day care. Ideally, we wish for our animals should be
adopted as "family" pets, not for the children only.
Animals adopted from Greener Grasses are not to be sold, given away,
or otherwise transferred to any other person or organization other than the
person or organization to which adoption rights are granted. If for any
reason the adopter is unable to retain possession of the animal, the
animal MUST be returned to Greener Grasses.
We do not allow our animals to be used for purposes other than
companionship. This includes breeding, showing, eating, or defense. We
will refuse to adopt to anyone who engages in any of these practices with
their animals.
Steps in the adoption process:
1. Before you apply, we urge you to become familiar with
the housing,
diet, and health requirements of the species you are interested in.
These are not low-maintenance pets. A wonderful place to begin learning about guinea pigs is the Guinea Lynx care guide. We recommend you read through this guide before submitting an application to adopt.
2. We ask all potential adopters to fill out an adoption application.
You may request an electronic adoption application via email. When completed, this MS-Word document can be returned via email. If you would like to request a hard copy of our adoption application, please contact us via email and we will be glad to mail you a copy.
3. When we receive your application and have performed the vet check,
we will email you to talk about your interests and needs and try to match you
up with your ideal pet.
4. We then schedule a time to visit your home so you can meet your
chosen animals. If there is to be an introduction between a pet you
currently have and the pet you are adopting, we
will also need to schedule a "date" on neutral ground for them to get
acquainted. The animals will generally not be left with you at this
time.
5. At the home check we will answer any remaining questions you might
have and schedule one more visit to bring the animals to you for
adoption!
Adoption fees:
We do ask for a small donation to be made for each animal which is
adopted. This donation does not even begin to cover the cost of the vet
care they will have received before they come to you! Larger donations
to cover the cost of spay/neuter and other care are always appreciated.
The adoption fee for one guinea pig is $25.
For a bonded pair of guinea pigs, the adoption fee is $45.
Return Policy:
We will always, no matter what, accept adopted animals back into the
rescue, no questions asked. It can be 5 years down the road, and your
adopted pet and any bondmates will still always be welcome back for
readoption or sanctuary.
Please contact us via email at adopt@greenergrasses.org with any questions and to request an adoption application. One of our volunteers will respond as soon as possible.
