Fees
Adoption costs consist of an adoption fee and a medical fee. Dog adoption fees are set by Island County ordinance 6.08.180. The dog adoption fee is $35.00. No ordinance exists to cover cats, but an agreement between WAIF and Island County has set the cat adoption fee at $20.00. These fees are transfered to Island County by WAIF as part of the shelter management contract.

Medical fees are paid to WAIF in the amount of $35.00 per dog and $35.00 for cat. These fees may cover one or more of the following items:

- Spaying or neutering of the adopted animal.
- Vaccinations done while in WAIF/'s care
- Initial worming
- Flea control, as required
- Veterinary care while in WAIF/'s care
- High quality diet while at the shelter
- Educational materials for adopters

In addition, persons living in unincorporated areas of Island County will be required to purchase a dog license at a cost of $7.00.

Services
The WAIF Animal Shelter is located on Highway 20, two miles
south of Coupeville on Whidbey Island. The shelter is approximately 25 miles from the Clinton-Mukilteo Ferry landing, and 15 miles south of the Deception Pass Bridge.

The Oak Harbor Cat Adoption Center is located inside the Oak Harbor WAIF Thrift Shop on Pioneer Way.

Announcement
The WAIF animal listings are updated weekly, usually on Friday night. Please check with the WAIF Animal Shelter at (360) 678-5816 or e-mail
shelter@waifanimals.org to make sure a listed animal is still available.

Lost & Found
WAIF does its best to ensure that we adopt only healthy
companion animals. We encourage (and require by contract) that adopters take their new companion for a vet check as soon as possible. Most Whidbey Island veterinarians provide a free initial check-up for animals adopted from the WAIF Animal Shelter.

How To Adopt A WAIF Animal:

WAIF asks potential adopters to fill out a profile so we may better match animals and families. This reduces the chances that an unsuitable match is made, and hopefully prevents the return of animals to the shelter. Online profile forms are available through WAIF's web site at www.waif.org.

If an adopter is interested in a particular animal, WAIF will hold that animal for 24 hours. This allows adopters to consider the commitment they are about to make, and allows WAIF to review the adoption, make calls to landlords if needed, and prepare the animal to be adopted(a bath is
sometimes a good idea.) This 24-hour wait period is waived on a case-by-case basis by shelter management discretion.

Description
Whidbey Animals' Improvement Foundation (WAIF) is a nonprofit organization on Whidbey Island, Washington that benefits the homeless companion animals of Whidbey Island. WAIF has been helping people and animals since 1990, most visibly at the WAIF Animal Shelter. Through the support of WAIF, a "minimal kill" policy is in place at the Shelter. This means that no animals are put to sleep because of shelter population. Only animals with aggressive behavioral problems and/or animals that are suffering are euthanized.

WAIF has programs designed to help pet owners deal with medical emergencies, spay/neuter funds for low income pet owners, help with feral cat overpopulation, education, and more. A thrift shop in Freeland helps support many of these programs.
