Who We Are

Welcome to the Alleghany Humane Society homepage. We serve as an animal shelter and local pound for Alleghany County, the city of Covington and the town of Clifton Forge, Virginia. Our facility enables the area's animal population to be reunited with their owners and gives animals a "second chance" for adoption. Our hours are 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Adopting a friend

If you live in our adoption area, Alleghany County or surrounding counties, just come to the shelter during hours of operation and pick out your new pet, fill out the paperwork and you can go home with your pet, unless it is deemed a special adoption. There is no adoption fee.

If you live outside our adoption area, but within the state of Virginia, there are two ways you could adopt one of our unsterilized animals (note... these regulations do not apply to in-area adopters): 1) If the animal were too young for sterilization surgery, or you prefer that your vet do the surgery, you would need to arrange a transfer to a Humane Society or ASPCA local to you. You will have to do all the legwork involved in this. We will assist you with information. Keep in mind that the amount of time that animals are kept at the animal control facility is very limited, so if you are truly interested, move on this quickly. Here are the steps to take: You must contact a humane society or ASPCA in your area and ask them if they would be willing to do a transfer from our humane society. If yes, you get their name, address, phone number and e-mail address. (If all goes well, your local Humane Society or ASPCA will be doing the actual adoption to you according to their rules and regulations and they will be the ones doing the follow-up to make sure your new pet is spay or neutered by you.) Then you e-mail us or call us with all the information above and also your name, address, phone number and e-mail, and begin thinking about how you will arrange for transport of the animal. Transportation is your responsibility. We will coordinate the transfer on our end (there is no adoption fee involved from us). 2) If the animal is old enough to sterilize, you could contact a vet local to our area (we can help you with this information) to make an appointment for the surgery. You will be required to give a credit card number to the vet to pay for the vetting. You would then contact us to give us the appointment date and place, and we would transport the animal to the vet. You would then pick the animal up from the vet when it is ready to go home. You will pay all vet costs. If you live outside the State of Virginia, the animal must be sterilized before it can be adopted outside the state.

Another thing to keep in mind as you consider one of our homeless animals: we cannot guarantee anything about the animal including health, disposition or former ownership. Also keep in mind that if an adopter comes along and is willing to adopt the animal before you arrange a pick up date, we will adopt to that person. Too many times we have held animals for folks who never show up. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Our purpose is to try to reduce the number of animals euthanized every year at our local animal control facility.
