Our pet of the month introduces himself...Dusty is our pet of the month. He is a collie / hound mix. He is friendly and loves exercise and attention. He especially loves to jog and have his head rubbed.

Who We Are
Welcome to the Alleghany Humane Society homepage. We serve as an animal shelter and local pound for Alleghany County, the city of Covington and the towns of Clifton Forge and Iron Gate, Virginia. Our facility enables the area's animal population to be reunited with their owners and gives animals a "second chance" for adoption. Our hours are 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sunday and other times by appointment.
Adopting a friend
If you live in our adoption area, Alleghany County or surrounding counties, please visit the shelter. We are in a new location, new building, and have a new staff. The staff is very friendly and would like you to stop by during hours of operation (or by appointment). The adoption fee has recently changed: adult non-altered dogs are $35; adult altered dogs are $50; puppies are $50; non-altered cats and kittens are $20; altered cats are $35. All adoption fees are non-refundable. If you are interested in one of our animals, but live outside the area, please call the shelter and see if we can arrange a transfer of the animal to a shelter close to you.
Volunteers
are needed for all types of jobs. We'd love to have you assist with filing, answering the phone, walking the dogs, helping with fundraisers, foster care, and community education. Please call the shelter is you can help - 862-2436.
