Who We Are

Many dogs have come through and found their special place and people, but many have not. It is the mission of Houlagans' Rest to be the rescue of last resort. We save and prepare for adoption dogs that have been rejected by others and are scheduled to be euthanized. This website is dedicated to help those dogs find their "forever homes".

Come Visit Us

SEE OUR DOGS EVERY SUNDAY:

PetSmart, 1276 Carmia Way, Richmond, VA 23235, from noon - 3:00 p.m.

Summer is over, and the kids are back in school.  Why not come out on Sunday to check out our dogs!  We frequently have new puppies and new dogs.

HIKE A HOULAGAN (HaH):

A new program for us, HaH (really, that's a fitting acronym I'm betting) will build confidence for dogs who need it to reconnect with folks. This isn't about strict obedience classes. It's about leash walking a rescue on a trail, maintaining control of the dog, gently correcting the dog (c'mon, you know they will be excited to trot, leap, gambol, sniff - it's like walking a furry game fish), praising the dog, and helping the pup move forward.

Ok. You're feeling a little adventurous, "Sign me up for that cruise!" Email Houlagans. (catahoulah@gmail.com).   We'll send you an application to volunteer (No, it's not a big deal!). You will need to sign a waiver (hiking can be dangerous). You will need to sign a statement that you have never been convicted of animal cruelty under any animal statute (Meanies beware and it's the law).   You will need hiking shoes (four footers can make two footers feel clumsy!). You will need a backpack to carry a snack, water and a little bowl for your hiking buddy (Oh! And your snack, water, etc).

Finally, you will need to guard your heart. There are hopeful, eager pups waiting for one-on-one time with a person. They lean in to gentle touches. They lock onto kind eyes. They romp around when a kindred romper offers fellowship.

HaH! Let's take a hike!

Where: Powhatan State Park on dog approved trails.
When: Any given Saturday. We can be pretty flexible. The first official hike - October 18th.
How: Email, apply, sign. Let's talk dogs to match you up with a Houlagan. Meet you at the park!
What: Shorter trails that won't hurt the pups - they aren't in trail shape. This should be a half day activity.
Who: You, dog, Houlagans' group leader. Groups will be small for the time being.

We laughed so hard, and enjoyed the dogs so much in the scouting hike that we made a calendar!! So, here's the tentative schedule:

October 18 - Hike
October 25 - Striking Fall Colors
November 1 - All Saints Hike
November 8 - Honor Our Troops Warm Up
November 15 - No Hike - Adoption Event
November 22 - Turkey Trail Hike
November 29 - No Scheduled Hike*
December 6 - Hike
December 13 - Jingle Hike
December 20 - No Scheduled Hike*
December 27 - Hike
January 3 - Renew Resolutions Hike

Hope to see you on the trail!

METRO RICHMOND PET SAVERS

Metro Richmond Pet Savers (MRPS) is a coalition of local rescue groups, shelters and educational organizations that have teamed up to reduce euthanasia rates in our municipal shelters. Each month the coalition selects a government shelter as its partner and the participating groups transfer as many animals out of that shelter as they can reasonably accommodate. On the second Saturday of each month MRPS members gather in the parking lot of a designated PetSmart store and present massive Adopt-a-Thons. Over 150 dogs and cats are available for adoption at these events.

On Saturday, October 11, 2014, Metro Richmond Pet Savers is having a HOGS 'N DOGS ADOPT-A-THON at Steel Horse Harley Davidson, 11501 Hull Street, Midlothian, from 11-2.  Stop by and see a HOULAGAN or another dog in need of a good home!!!!
