Important Information

We are NOT a NO KILL shelter! Due to lack of funding and space to hold dogs and cats, we have to euthanize (put to sleep) dogs and cats. Please, before you go to a pet store to buy a so-called "pure breed" and spend hundreds of $$, consider adopting a homeless pet from one of the many shelters or rescues in our area!!! You will be saving a life!!

Kittens ~ Kittens ~ Kittens

It's Kitten season and we have lots and lots of adorable, sweet, babies looking for forever homes. Most of these kittens will be euthanized if not adopted within the next few weeks. Please consider adding a wonderful cat to your home!

What is a Puppy Mill?

You see the signs outside pet stores, "No puppy mills!" and never consider the source of those adorable puppies inside. They are not magically brought to the pet store after having been lovingly raised and handpicked for sale. Most lilkely, they came from a puppy mill. In our area, 50 dogs were recently confiscated in a puppy mill bust because of squalid living conditions: no shelter, no food, no water .. . living in their own filth day after day after day. You don't see the background when you see the 8-week-old puppy in the window. So how can a pet store say they do not get their $750 puppies from a puppy mill? They deal with a broker, who will go to the puppy mill and buy dogs, and then resell them to the pet store. Your cute little fuzzy puppy more than likely came from a breeding facility where mom was kept confined to a small cage or pen and bred every time she came into heat, sometimes birthing three litters a year. Many times, the puppy's heritage includes grade 3 or higher heart murmers, a tendency to have allergic skin conditions requiring daily treatment, and chronic dental disease, and joint problems. But you will never know that when you take home a fluffy ball of fur. We encourage you to become more knowledgeable about the fate and background of those puppies who come from pet stores, and we continue to ask you to adopt from a local pound or shelter. Who We Are

Appomattox Pound is a County funded holding facility for stray and owner surrendered pets. Strays brought in wearing collars are held for 12 days, without collars are held for 7 days. If their owner does not claim the animal during the holding period then they are available for adoption or Rescue. Owner surrendered animals will be available for adoption immediately. Appomattox County Pound does not maintain this website. They provide information about the animals available for adoption. However, volunteers maintain postings and information on this site. If you have questions about any of our animals listed, please email your questions to www.Appomattoxcares@yahoo.com .
