Want to help a boxer in need but you can't adopt or foster? Now you can sponsor a dog in need! We have many dogs on our website that are currently in kill shelters. Even if we have foster homes available, we can't pull these dogs unless we have the funds available to get them vetted (usually $200-500 per dog). Even a small donation helps!

Bear is an awesome 5 month old boxer/lab/shepherd mix boy. We have NO idea why he has been in foster care for so long! He's young, friendly, outgoing, healthy and great with other dogs but, somehow, he keeps getting passed over. Whoever decides to give this boy a forever home is going to be very lucky, though!

Who We Are
Richmond Boxer Rescue is a very small organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating boxers. We pride ourselves on taking the dogs that no one else will take.....the senior boxers, boxers with heartworms, boxers with demodex or other minor health issues. We will help any dog in need, though, so there are also usually young, healthy dogs available. We do not have a shelter facility so we can only house as many dogs as we have foster homes for. If you are interested in adopting and we don't have a dog in foster care that would fit your family's lifestyle, please contact us. We would be happy to put you on a waiting list for a boxer.
Because there are so many boxers already in kill shelters, we are rarely able to take in owner surrenders. If your boxer is over 12 months old and not fully vetted (neutered, vaccinated and recently heartworm tested), there will be a surrender fee of $100 to help with vetting costs. We will assist owners with placing dogs ONLY if they have been neutered and vetted. Please do not rehome your boxer before it has been neutered! Contact PAL (www.preventalitter.org) or the Richmond SPCA for free or low cost options. There is NO excuse for rehoming an intact dog.
Please fill out our Adoption Application if you are interested in any of our dogs. Emails are returned by volunteers who have full time jobs. We will return emails as soon as we can. Also, please check the website for updates. If an adoption is pending, it will be listed on the site. If an animal is removed from the site, it is no longer available for adoption or foster. Please check the site before you email.
RBR is happy to offer discounted adoption fees on all senior dogs (over age 7). We will offer an additional discount to senior citizens who adopt senior dogs!
Fostering
We do not have a shelter facility. All of our dogs are housed in private foster homes and cared for by our foster parents. They live as a member of the family and are taught basic obedience and manners. Most of our foster parents are near the Richmond area but we do have foster parents in other parts of VA as well. If there isn't a foster home available, we cannot help anymore dogs. Because of this, we are always in need of more foster homes. If you are willing to open up your home to a boxer in need, please fill out our Foster Application. Foster homes are provided with a crate, all approved veterinary care and we can help out with food costs if needed. You just provide a loving home until your boxer is adopted! We are starting a new policy that no foster parent can adopt for 90 days after they begin volunteering. This policy is being put in place since we lose so many foster parents after they adopt their first foster dog. It is also in the best interest of the foster parent as it allows them to live with different personalities and temperments so they can pick the best fit for their home rather than making an emotional choice to adopt their first foster dog.
Why become a foster parent? Words can't descibe how it feels to take a dog that is scared, abandoned, sick, emaciated or abused and turn that dog into a confident, healthy pet and send it to a loving home. Taking an animal that has had such a rough start to life and letting it know that it will never spend another day of it's life without love is something that you have to experience to understand. Watching that dog go to it's new home is bittersweet but, finding the perfect home for that dog opens up a spot to take in the next shelter dog. The reward you get from fostering is unlike anything else you can imagine. The pictures below are the before and after shots of some of our most memorable RBR dogs.

Adopting a friend
If you are interested in adopting a dog, please fill out our Adoption Application and then e-mail it to adopt@richmondboxerrescue.org. After your application has been approved and the home inspection is completed, you can take the dog home for a "trial adoption." Trial adoptions usually last 7 days but may last longer depending on the situation. This is to make sure that the dog is the perfect fit for your family before you make the final decision to make him or her a family member. After the trial adoption, there is a contract to sign and an adoption fee of $150-325 depending on the age and breed/mix of the dog. Adoption fees for individual dogs are listed on their Petfinder sites. All dogs are adopted neutered, up to date with vaccinations, dewormed, microchipped, heartworm tested (if age appropriate) and started on flea and heartworm preventatives.
Our Policies
Richmond Boxer Rescue will adopt dogs to anywhere in the state of VA. We will try to accomodate adopters in NC, DC and MD as well.
Adopters must have a fenced yard (some dogs will require a 6 ft. or higher fence). Some exceptions may be made.
Adopters must be at least 21 years of age.
All animals in household must be spayed/neutered unless there is a medical reason preventing this. If you have another legitimate reason for not neutering your pet, we are willing to discuss further.
Current pets must be up to date on vaccines and on heartworm preventatives.
You must be open to a home visit before adoption and possible follow-up visits.
We do not adopt to homes with children under the age of 6 except in special circumstances. Dogs under 1 year of age will not be placed in homes with children under the age of 12. This is a new policy in light of several recently returned dogs, all from homes with young children.

Adoption Fees
Below is a breakdown of what it costs to take care of the average boxer that enters foster care.
Spay/neuter surgery: $80
DAPP vaccine(s): $15 each
Rabies vaccine: $10
Microchip: $35
Dewormer: $20
Heartworm Test: $20
Flea/heartworm preventatives: $15 (per month)
Food for 1 month: $30
It costs over $200 to care for each HEALTHY boxer that enters foster care. Unfortunately, most dogs that come to us need some extra TLC.
Heartworm treatment: $350+
Mange treatments: $200-400
Antibiotics: $50-100
Leg amputation: $500+
Tail amputation: $300+
Our adoption fees and donations are the only sources of income we have and they allow us to continue rescuing boxers. Adoption fees for dogs under 6 months are $250-325. Dogs 6-18 months are $200-275. Dogs 18 months-6 years are $200-225. Dogs over 6 years of age are $150-175. Additional discounts will be given to senior citizens who adopt senior boxers (7 years or older).
Donations
RBR can always use monetary donations. We also desperately need crates (36 inch or larger), Frontline, heartworm preventatives, puppy pads, blankets, new or gently used leashes, collars, dog beds, dog food (Chicken Soup or any other premium kibble) or gift cards to Colonial Heights Veterinary Hospital (yes, they have gift cards!!), Dogma, PetCo or PetSmart.
If you have any other items that you would like to donate, please let us know. We have a yard sale every spring so even non-dog related items can be sold to raise money for RBR!
