The animals at Wise County Animal Shelter change daily. Please take the time to call or come visit since keeping the listing here as up-to-date as we'd wish isn't always possible.
Please note when reviewing listings that some animals may be in Foster Homes and not at the shelter. You'll want to contact the party listed to be sure to get adoption information about the pet in question.
Pets in foster care can involve different adoption procedures, vet care prior to placement and pets that assessed, trained and/or rehabilitated. Something we typically cannot offer at the shelter.
Wise County Animal Shelter seeks to work with rescues and to adopt to forever families whenever possible. All animals must be spayed or neutered, usually prior to going to the forever home or rescue. Please contact us for more information or questions.
Who We Are
Wise County Animal Shelter in Norton, Virginia is a municipal shelter supporting all of Wise County. Currently, this very rural area does not have an animal leash law or it tends to be weakly enforced. Our stray animal population at the shelter is primarily driven by complaint. Regardless as a shelter that must turn to euthanasia as a means of controlling the overall population we always have less adoptions than we'd hope. Puppies, kittens, cats, adult dogs, and more all wait at the shelter at any given time deserving a better option.
Occasionally we list animals that are fostered in local homes and part of independent rescue efforts. Please note the contact person/information for the individual dog(s) and/or cat(s) that you are interested in to most efficiently pursue your adoption.
Adopting a friend
To report stray animals please contact Animal Control at (276) 679-6750 between the hours of 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. weekdays.
All animals available for adoption are released on a first come, first serve basis. Animals will not be reserved for anyone. Wise County reserves the right to refuse the adoption or release of any animal that is considered to be a danger to the public or a public nuisance. No out-of-state adoptions are permitted. All stray animals are held at the shelter for 5 days, 10 days if wearing a collar, before being offered for adoption or being euthanized.
All adopted animals are required to be spayed/neutered by VA Code Section 3.1-796.126:3 at the adopters expense.
