URGENT: Pound is close to capacity, please share and adopt, rescue, foster!
UPDATE: CLAY has had surgery and is recovering in foster care! Clay has a large tumor near his testicles that needs to be removed, the vet checked it out, and says he's not in any pain, but it is big and he needs to be neutered anyway, which they will do at the same time. We are seeking out a sponsor to help pay for this surgery which will cost around $400 dollars. He is so calm and GENTLE! What a great older guy, so deserving of a great home.Found at Hampstead Rd in the Old Church area of New Kent, very near the Hanover Co line. Senior male, wearing a collar, no ID. Very sweet older guy, please help! Please share to help him, the pound is FULL of beagles and hounds.

Some dedicated citizens have come together and formed a non-profit, all volunteer group to help save homeless animal's lives. The New Kent Humane Society, Inc. was formed in Jan. 2009 and needs more volunteers and foster homes so they can help save more animals. Here is the link to their website to find out more about them and how you can help: http://www.newkenthumane.org
This site is not a full listing of all current dogs in the New Kent Animal Control. It is for dogs/cats who will be available for adoption upon the ending of their stray hold and some courtesy posts for owned animals looking for new homes.
If you have lost your dog or cat, call us to report them missing and visit during the hours listed below.
Remember: In accordance with VA Animal Laws: Pets are personal property AND
if you have found a stray pet in New Kent County, you MUST call us at 804 966-9500 and report them as found, with a description and your contact information. You will need to bring them to a veterinarian or the shelter to be scanned for a microchip and you will need to send in a photograph of the found animal or bring it in to be photographed for the found pet file.
No matter how bad of condition you think the animal is in, they may have been lost for a long while and a caring owner may be looking to reclaim the pet.
You do not have to turn the found animal into the pound, but you must report them as found.

Licensing: Returning pets to their owners is very important to us. We strive to get every dog licensed in New Kent County. Licensing your dog will help protect him/her from becoming just another statistic.
Annual license fee is only $6.00, if you have not purchased your 2014 County License, please do so right away, it's the law!!! Please help us increase the number of pets returned to their owners; keep ID and County License fastened on your pet's collar.
If you lose your tag a replacement is available from the Treasurer's Office for the cost of $1.
We hold an annual rabies clinic the last Saturday of every January from 8:30am to 11:30am in the Courthouse Parking Lot.
We have chosen Kuranda dog beds because they are so good for our dogs. We want to fill all of our kennels with these excellent beds. If you would like to donate a bed so that a lost or homeless dog can sleep in proper comfort, please click here.
Adopting a friend
We require an adoption contract and an adoption fee, also, a signed agreement for mandatory sterilization, which must be completed within 30 days of the adoption date with proof returned to us (fax, in person, mail, e-mail) within 7 days of surgery, if the animal is not already sterilized.
You may adopt one of our unaltered animals (and you must get the animal spayed/neutered) if you live in one of the following localities: Henrico, Hanover, Charles City, James City, King William, West Point, and King and Queen. You must sign an agreement to spay/neuter the animal within 30 days and return proof of altering to us. We do adopt already spayed/neutered animals to New Kent, all other VA localities and also out of state.
We have low cost spay and neuter information, please ask us. Please do not just feed stray cats, there are many low cost (as low as $20) or free spay/neuter services to assist you. We understand, you may feel they are not yours and are stray, but if you are feeding them, they depend on you, and you need to be responsible and get them vaccinated and sterilized before there is a huge unwanted cat problem on your property. Cats start reproducing at 4-5 months of age and can have up to 4 large litters of kittens every year! You can see how this will get out of hand very quickly. Please be responsible and call for information and if you know of someone feeding, please pass this information on to them.
Rescue groups and foster homes are welcome and needed, please e-mail or call to see how you can help make a difference, even if you can't adopt.
