Our Featured Pet...

Meet Zoe: Zoe is labeled as a special needs kitty. She was brought to a local pound after she was found lying near a roadside. Zoe was in terrible shape, and we think she may have been hit by a car. She could not walk on one of her back legs and was extremely emaciated. She was taken to the vet, given lots of vitamin supplements and placed into a loving foster home to recuperate. Zoe was finally on the mend when she needed to go back to the Vet for her routine shots and checkup. While at the vet, she was mistakenly set up for a spay appointment (she was already spayed). Her leg unfortunately was re-injured during the procedure and she had to go through another period of recuperation. After 2 years in foster care, Zoe is doing great. Her leg has healed, although she walks with a limp, she uses her leg to jump, walk, run and play just fine. Zoe loves to lie in your lap and loves head/cheek rubs. Zoe, however, does have her quirks. She is a bit temperamental and does not care for children or for other pets. She has been in foster care with other cats, and has tolerated them, but would really prefer to be in a 1 pet (cat) or less household. Given all that Zoe has been through, she is a very special cat who just wants a loving forever home. If you are looking for a special needs kitty, please consider Zoe for adoption.

Some dedicated citizens have come together and formed a non-profit, all volunteer group to help save homeless animal's lives. The New Kent Humane Society, Inc. was formed in Jan. 2009 and needs more volunteers and foster homes so they can help save more animals. Here is the link to their website to find out more about them and how you can help: http://www.newkenthumane.org

ATTENTION: This site is not a full listing of all current dogs in the New Kent Animal Control. It is for dogs/cats who will be available for adoption upon the ending of their stray hold and some courtesy posts for owned animals looking for new homes. If you have lost your dog or cat, call us to report them missing and visit during the hours listed below. Remember: In accordance with VA Animal Laws: Pets are personal property AND if you have found a stray pet in New Kent County, you MUST call us at 804 966-9500 and report them as found, with a description and your contact information. You will need to bring them to a veterinarian or the shelter to be scanned for a microchip and you will need to send in a photograph of the found animal or bring it in to be photographed for the found pet file. No matter how bad of condition you think the animal is in, they may have been lost for a long while and a caring owner may be looking to reclaim the pet. You do not have to turn the found animal into the pound, but you must report them as found.

We strive to get every dog licensed in New Kent County. Licensing your dog will help protect him/her from becoming just another statistic. Annual license fee is only $6.00, if you have not purchased your 2010 County License, please do so right away, it's the law!!! Please help us increase the number of pets returned to their owners; keep ID and County License fastened on your pet's collar. If you lose your tag a replacement is available from the Treasurer's Office for the cost of $1. We hold an annual rabies clinic the last Saturday of every January from 8am to 11am in the Courthouse Parking Lot.

Donate a Bed We have chosen Kuranda dog beds because they are so good for our dogs. We want to fill all of our kennels with these excellent beds. If you would like to donate a bed so that a lost or homeless dog can sleep in proper comfort, please click here.
