Who We Are

We are The Animal Control Division of The Powhatan County, Va. Sheriff's Office. All dogs and cats that enter our shelter must be kept 5 days (with no collar) and 10 days (with collar) to give the owner an opportunity to claim their pet. If the owner doesn't come forward by the date assigned, we can then try our best to find homes for these pets. Finding good homes in time is the key for saving these pets. Please check out some of our nice dogs and cats and consider giving them a good home!! Be a RESPONSIBLE pet owner. Always know where your pet is. Keep a collar with ID tags on your pet. Make sure your pet's vaccinations are up to date as well as their County License. AND PLEASE, be a part of the solution rather than the problem, SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS!

Adopting a friend

All pets adopted from us must be Spayed or Neutered within 30 days. (or by the age of 6 months if adopting a puppy or kitten) .An agreement to that effect must be signed and one copy returned to us by the required date to verify that sterilization has been done. Our adoption fee is only $25.00. That includes your initial vet visit, first rabies vaccine and first distemper shot. We adopt to all surrounding counties. Out of state or out of area individual adoptions are possible with certain restrictions. Rescue Groups, with documentation, are always welcome and appreciated! PLEASE REFER TO THE PET"S NAME WHEN INQUIRING ABOUT A DOG OR CAT. Only Powhatan county residents and surrounding counties can adopt a pet under six months of age. There are no same day adoptions. You must fill out an application and be approved first before adopting.
