Lake Country SPCA has a new website. http://www.lakecountryspca.com/
Come and take a look around. It's new, so we still have quite a bit to add and are in the process of adding the adoptable cats and kittens but most of the dogs and puppies are shown.

Tickets can be purchased ahead of time at Ace Hardware in Clarksville or at our Lakefest Booth on July 18.
DOG WALKERS, TRAINERS & PET SOCIALIZERS NEEDED
Our staff and volunteers are so busy cleaning, feeding, watering, helping customers, etc., we rarely get a chance to walk or play with the dogs or give them obediance training. The cats crave attention and petting and some need socializing. All of the animals are desperate for attention and exercise, and many of them could benefit by being exposed to men and children (most of our workers are women). If you or family members have free time and would like to come pet or play with the animals, teach them how to walk on leashes, how to fetch, sit, etc., please come on in and volunteer! Call 434 374-8076, email lakecountryspca@yahoo.com or just stop by the shelter anytime at 7577 Hwy. 58, Clarksville, VA 23927 next to Ace Hardware.
THERAPUTIC FOSTER HOMES NEEDED
The Lake Country SPCA has some animals, both cats and dogs, who are in need of temporary foster homes where they can learn what it's like to be loved, held and played with.
We do our best here to socialize each and every animal, but some come in so scared and damaged that only one on one work will help them recover from what they've been through.
This is not long term foster care, this is socialization and behavioral work to aid the animal in becoming happier, healthier and more adoptable.
If you are interested in helping with this program, please contact the SPCA at 434-374-8076 or stop by the shelter at 7577 Hwy. 58 in Clarksville, next to Ace Hardware.
IN ADDITION, we also have some dogs who have been with us for years, who are wonderful loving animals, but sadly, due to age over 3-5 years, breed, or medical conditions, are unlikely to ever be adopted. They need loving, long term foster homes. LCSPCA takes care of living and medical expenses. For more information, please contact Pam at the shelter 434 374-8076.
NEW HOURS OF OPERATION
Lake Country SPCA is happy to announce it's new hours of operation.
We are now open 7 days a week from 10am-4pm. We may not always be able to answer the phone when you call, but we are there. Please stop by in person. We love to meet new people. We are located 7577 Hwy.Business 58, Clarksville, VA 23927 right next to Ace Hardware and across the street from the Blue Collar Cafe. You may also email us at lakecountryspca@yahoo.com.
Who We Are
Lake Country SPCA, founded in September 2002, is a non-profit, no-kill animal rescue group based in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Our organization is run completely by volunteers dedicated to the well being of companion animals. Since our pemanent facility is in the planning stages, all animals in the custody of LCSPCA are housed in foster homes or at our temporary shelter location at 7577 Hwy. 58, Clarksville. In addition to housing rescued animals, our members also feed, water, walk, and play with animals, clean cages and kennels, administer medications, assist with transportation for medical treatments and spay/neuters, assist with adoptions and transfers, rescue animals in need, help with state required paperwork, organize or attend fundraisers, greet customers, administer our programs and respond to calls on our telephone line, 434-374-8076.
*****AS OF SUMMER 2009, WE ARE VERY, VERY SHORT ON OPERATING FUNDS AND ARE IN IMMEDIATE NEED OF CASH DONATIONS TO KEEP THE ANIMAL SHELTER RUNNING. IF YOU CAN HELP, PLEASE MAIL CHECKS TO LAKE COUNTRY SPCA, P.O. BOX 14, CLARKSVILLE, VA 23927 OR DROP OFF A DONATION AT THE SHELTER OR ACE HARDWARE AND NOTE THAT THIS IS TOWARD THE SOS (SAVE OUR SHELTER) CAMPAIGN. DUE TO THE BAD ECONOMY AND SO MANY PEOPLE TURNING IN ANIMALS, NOT SPAYING OR NEUTERING THEM, AND/OR ABANDONING THEM, WE ARE TAKING IN RECORD NUMBERS OF ANIMALS BUT MAKING FEWER ADOPTIONS. ALONG WITH THIS, OUR PAYROLL HAS DOUBLED IN ORDER TO CARE FOR ALL THE ANIMALS AND OUR VET BILLS ARE VERY HIGH. IF YOU WANT TO KEEP US IN THE COMMUNITY PROVIDING THIS SERVICE, PLEASE HELP OR HELP SOME MORE IF YOU ALREADY HAVE. WE HAVE LITTLE LEFT IN RESERVE. WE ALSO WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE ALREADY OVER THE YEARS DONATED SO MUCH TIME AND MONEY TO THE SPCA TO TAKE THE ANIMALS OFF OUR STREETS, AND FIND THEM HOMES.*****
Coming Events
Please watch the Pet of the Week ad and coming events sections of the local newspapers for the date of our next general meeting and/or fund raisers.

Sponsor a Cage or Kennel
You can help our animals by participating in the Lake Country SPCA Sponsor a Cage program. Your sponsorship donation will contribute significantly toward funding the cost of caring for the animals at LCSPCA. Cage or kennel sponsorship is a great way for you to help all the animals you would love to take home, but can’t.
Our annual sponsorship rates are $50 for a cat cage and $75 for a dog kennel. Your cage will have a special 4x6 plaque with the wording of your choice. Please contact us if you are interesting in participating. Mail donations to LCSPCA at P.O. Box 14, Clarksville, VA 23917 and give the information you would like on your plaque. If you would like to make a straight donation to us, we also have gift cards we can mail you or whomever you are making a donation in the name of. We have cards for "in memory of," or "in honor of," for example.

Help Desperately Needed with Expense
The task of keeping the living spaces of the animals at the shelter is a monumental job that must be done 7-days a week come rain or shine.
When there were only a couple of dozen dogs and a few cats in our custody, the job was manageable with the help of a few volunteers. Now that that number has grown to over a 150 dogs and over 100 cats, using only volunteer labor is no longer possible. As a result, it was necessary to hire several people to clean and feed all the animals, and deal with meds and customers 7 days a week. This is an expense that LCSPCA had hoped to avoid for some time to come.
We are now asking our members and friends for help with this unavoidable and unforeseen expense. You can help by pledging a tax-deductible dollar amount each month to help offset the expense. Payments can be made monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually.
If you can help, please send your name, address, the monthly amount pledged, and your check payable to LCSPCA and mail it to LCSPCA, PO Box 14, Clarksville, VA 23927. If you have any questions, please call 434-374-8076. The Dogs and Cats, and occasional rabbit, racoon, hamster, or bird, say, "Thank you!"

DONATE A DOG BED
Exclusive Kuranda Dog Bed Offer for People Who Want To Donate A Cot.
In the past LCSPCA has purchased dog houses, crates, blankets, fiber filled dog beds and dog cots and they all seem to get chewed up or destroyed over time. Kuranda has very durable cots that we would like to purchase so the dogs and cats will not have to lay on hard concrete or plastic crates and we can cut down on the amount of laundry from blankets, and other cloth bedding currently being used. Kuranda will let people go to their web site and purchase a cot or cots for the shelter of their choice and will ship it to the shelter. They will give you a 30% discount. The cots cost $54 to $99 each depending on which one you choose. Please help us out and supply a bed for a dog or cat today. We are in desperate need. Right now we do not even have dog houses or crates for every dog and we are having to use blankets on the concrete floor or dog house tops turned upside down with blankets inside them as beds. Go to kuranda.com. Click on "Donate a Bed." Choose "Lake Country SPCA----Clarksville, VA" from their list of participating shelters and then choose a cot and add it to your shopping cart and pay. They will send us an email notification of your donation and the cot will be sent directly to our shelter! We typically have about 70-100 dogs and 75-100 cats at the shelter as well as many more in foster care. Having something to lay on to get them up off the cold, hard and sometimes wet concrete, will make their homeless kennel experience more tolerable. In turn this will make the animals happier, less stressed, and show better when prospective adopters come through the shelter, which will get them into homes quicker! One person CAN make a difference when you add all those ONES up. By buying 1 dog or cat a bed, you can make a big difference in the quality of a shelter animal's life and possibly be aiding in it's adoption, without even setting foot in the shelter.
SPCA Instills Respect For Pets In Children
Teaching children the responsibility of caring for all creatures is one of the many goals of the Lake Country SPCA. The Adopt-A-Classroom Program is aimed at funding this important initiative and community groups, businesses and individuals are already on board.
The donations make it possible for Lake Country SPCA to provide classrooms in all six elementary schools in Mecklenburg County and the Kindergarten classrooms at Brunswick Academy with a children's newspaper entitled KIND News and other materials focused on helping instructors encourage good character in their students. The award-winning newspaper teaches children about kindness and respect for people, animals, and the environment through articles, activities, short stories, projects and puzzles.
During the summer months, Rhonda Alexander and Shelly Moore, LCSPCA volunteers, discussed the program with Mecklenburg County elementary school principals and teachers to coordinate which classrooms would participate.
Each $30 tax-deductible contribution provides a K-6 teacher and his/her classroom with 32 copies of KIND News and a teacher's guide for every month of the school year. Teachers receive KIND Teacher, a resource book of reproducible worksheets. The Adopt-A-Classroom Program also includes KIND identification cards for students, a classroom poster and a calendar of fun facts and tips on how to help and protect people, animals and the environment.
If you would like to sponsor a classroom or if you need more information about the Adopt-A-Classroom Program, please contact Lake Country SPCA at 434-374-8076 or email us at lakecountryspca@yahoo.com.
How You Can Help LCSPCA
Items Needed
Due to the rapidly growing number of animals in our care, LCSPCA is having a difficult time providing for all their needs. We are particularly in need of the following:
Old sheets, blankets, towels, pet beds or pet cots, etc. for cats and dogs to sleep on. We need newspaper to line pens and cages and aluminum cans to recycle for money.
We have many dogs that need dog houses because they chew them or break them and we often need new ones. We would appreciate any donations toward dog houses or donated dog houses you may have.
Dry or wet kitten or puppy food have always been needed. We used to get cat litter, and adult dog and cat food donated by large pet product manufacturers but due to the poor economy and them tightening their belts, we can no longer count on if or when they will give us any again. So we are now having to buy pet food and litter and welcome any donations you can drop off at the shelter at 7577 Hwy. 58, Clarksville, VA 23927.
We can also use used items items, such as carriers, crates, cages, collars, pet toys, leashes, cots, beds, food bowls, etc. that you may not need anymore.
.
Volunteers Needed
LCSPCA is trying to organize a list of volunteers for different tasks and need your help. As you know, this organization relies solely on welcome new volunteers to get EVERYTHING done. Some of them are overworked and need a break.
There are so many things you can do to help. Cleaning cages or kennels not your thing? How about helping out by volunteering at a fundraiser or coordinating volunteers to work at a fundraiser, doing handyman work at the shelter building, providing obedience training, or walking or playing with dogs or socializing them or cats? You can walk dogs, answer phones, greet customers, or help with adoptions.
Do you have your own website? Post a link to Petfinder.com or pets911.com on you website. This will help advertise the pets available for adoption.
Do you enjoy working with children? Join our Education Committee. All our committees (Fundraising, Publicity, Education, Membership, etc.) could use ideas and workers.
If you are able to help, Email lakecountryspca@Yahoo.com
Adopting a friend
LCSPCA strives to find a good home for every animal in our care. All of our animals are located at our shelter at 7577 Hwy. 58 in Clarksville , or in foster homes. In order to have a volunteer who is knowledgeable about our pets and able to assist you in choosing the best companion animal for your family, please call LCSPCA at 434-374-8076, email lakecountryspca@yahoo.com, or visit the shelter at 7577 Hwy. 58, Clarksville, VA 23927 seven days a week from 10am-4pm. The shelter is the old Cooperative Supply building beside Clarksville Ace Hardware on Hwy 58 West in Clarksville and is the place to meet up with one of our volunteers and see some of the animals. See all pets online at lakecountryspca.com and click on "petfinder."
Our adoption policy, spay/neuter programs, ect. will be discussed more indepth with you at that time. Adoption donation for an older puppy or adult dog is only $75, young puppy $125, and a cat is only $40-50. For this donation, the animal is already or can be spayed or neutered and provided all shots, including rabies, making the adoption economical and hassle free. If a puppy or kitten is sexually immature when you adopt, you may bring it back to us or our vet at no additional cost to get it altered by age 6 months, or else agree to have it altered at your vet at your expense by age 6 months per VA law. Many other shelters in the surrounding areas ask for donations much higher than this. With these low donation requests, we hope to move as many pets into permanent homes as possible, while still being able to cover basic operating expenses. Donations above and beyond this, are of course, very welcome and will help us to help many more animals. LCSPCA took in 1,092 animals in 2008 and hopes, with your support, to be able to continue to help animals and the community for years to come.
